Just got back from a week at AKL Kidani and wanted to share my thoughts. We were a group of 9 and stayed in a dedicated 2 bedroom, with Savanna view. We own at BLT, and this was our second time staying at Kidani.

Room: Location was spectacular. We requested 2nd floor near the Timon elevator. Perfect location being on the lobby level, not to far from the lobby and very convenient for the buses. Only a 5-7 min walk to Jambo House. Was very happy with the room and location.

Three issues that we had that were very negative:
1.) The bees near the pool. Both times we have stayed there now, this has been an issue and other people were complaining as well. Something needs to be done about this.
2.) Bus transportation was awful. Waited 25-30 minutes multiple times. Also, when leaving the parks at closing, there are so many people waiting for a bus at the AKL stop, that rarely did we ever get on the first bus. By day 3, we were all saying that this is why we own at BLT.
3.) Service at The Mara is terrible. They have one person taking all of the orders. Every time we went there for breakfast or lunch, the line was at least 15 people deep. Contempo Cafe is so much more efficient with ordering at the kiosks. Why not do that at the Mara as well?

Food: We were on the dining plan and I thought the food at the TS and QS restaurants were they best they have been in years. Had great meals at Yak and Yeti, Via Napoli, 1900 Park Fare (breakfast). Only bad meal was at Paradiso 37 at Disney Springs. Bad service and food quality was OK at best. Also found quick service options at Pizzarizzo, Flame Tree BBQ and San Angel Inn to be better than previous visits.

FP+: I still have major issues with this and see no benefit to it. We do not get on as many rides as we used to and the standby lines for all rides are much longer than they used to be. We would finish our first 3 FP's by 12:30 each day, and most of the best rides had no FP availability for the rest of the day when we went to book our 4th FP. After spending a week at Disney, we went and spent 4 days at Universal and stayed on site and had Express Pass. What a joy! It is absolutely superior to FP+ and makes the vacation much more relaxing and enjoyable. Disney should offer an incentive to VC members with additional FP opportunities.

Overall, there were many good things and some negatives from the trip. Will probably not stay at AKL again for a long time because of the issues mentioned above. This trip just confirmed once again why we own at BLT. Being able to walk to MK is absolutely the best feature of any VC property in our opinion.

So glad to hear about the fact that you loved your room location at Kidani. Last time I was at Kidani, I requested close to lobby and lobby floor. I got neither-my room was in the furthest "pod". I swore I'd never go back, but DGDs requested it this trip (and we don't say "No" to DGD very often!) so we're headed back there in October. I'm so nervous about our room location, however, and your post made me feel lots better.

. . . .

With the over bee loss in the U.S. Disney is probably hesitant to destroy bees that are natural pollinators.

BTW, when we ate at the Contempo Cafe in April, they had done away with the kiosks and had you order at the check out.

We noticed the same problems with the bees in the pool and with Mara last time we went. The service at Mara was absolutely horrible -to the point that hubby complained and got the charges taken off our room bill. We are not in the habit of complaining but the wait was so long, the orders were wrong, the food was cold...

We were at AKV Jambo at the end of July and overall we had a great stay. I agree with you about the transportation. The monitor screens were a nice touch to let you know when the next bus was coming, but they were only working a couple of the times we were there. I don't know why they were not on all the time.

We also experienced very long lines at The Mara and the food was only so so. The $2.99 frozen pizza that I bought in the gift shop and microwaved in my room was better than the flatbread pizza I got at The Mara. I think we will skip The Mara all together on any future trips to AKV.

I still love AKV and we do own there, but I get what you mean about the convenience of walking to the parks! Our other home is BWV, and we all agreed that our next trip needs to be back there.

Did you go to the water area at Kidani? Did the walk seem inconvenient?

Since bees are "endangered", don't plan on Disney killing them. They need them for the plants. If they are hanging around the self-serve beverages, that's on the guests for making a mess (but Disney needs to clean it up more often).

I'm so sad to read the Mara is not the hidden gem it used to be. I've been to AKV 4 years ago and liked the Mara for the options and service, that's one of the (many) things I liked about the resort.
About time on the screens, they really should put those available on the app, so one can check them while in the room and time the exit from the room to minimize waits.

I was planning on a Savannah view trip to AKL with our DDs (4 & 7) in a couple of years. I really hope they address some of these issues by then. We have time to save $$ for alternate transportation (Minnie Van, Uber, Cab, etc). It is just unfortunate that is a concern.

I noticed that the VGF pool bar refill station didn't have a bee issue last month. I noticed they had a high velocity air "curtain" in front of the refil area, and CM's seemed to keep the area clean.

We noticed the bees last year at SSR. They need to keep the air curtain turned on at all times. For some reason it would go off sometimes at the pools at SSR

We were at AKL in April, swam at both pools and never saw any bees. Maybe they're worse in the summer than in the spring? We also had a good experience with AKL bus transportation and at the Mara. So, it seems that some of the issues you had are transient, which is at least good news for other guests. I'm glad you enjoyed your stay aside from those problems.
