Does anyone have any great tips for me on how to get the best shots with this new lens? Throw it all at me!

Use a smaller aperture than you think you need. It is hard to get enough DOF when shooting macro.

Use a tripod. With that small aperture, it is hard to get enough light.

I definitely agree with using a tripod. As for aperture, my thought is that you should select the one that gives you the creative result you desire. Since you're mounted on a tripod, you don't need to worry about the shutter speed (unless your subject is prone to movement)

If you have a membership at KelbyTraining.com, they just published a couple of training courses on macro photography by Bill Fortney. Good stuff. You can see the first couple of lessons from any course for free to get an idea what it's like before you plunk down any money.

What he said. And I'll add have patience with yourself. Nailing the focus where you want it with a really shallow DoF can be tough.

I hear you, but at least for my first several experiences with macro, I was always shocked at how little DOF I was getting. I'd fire away at f/16 only to find a result that looked like f/1.8 on a normal subject. So yeah, definitely use the aperture that gives you the creative result that you desire. Just be aware that you'll be stopping down way, way, way more than you expect. Honestly, probably another stop or two more than that.

Oh, I agree with that. You can definitely stop down for DOF with Macro. I was just thinking in terms of shutter speed. Thanks for clarifying.

Awesome! A macro lens can bring on many creative possibilities!

I have the Canon EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS lens and absolutely love it especially when I need to use it for the wedding details. Plus it work's great for wedding portraits! :goodvibes

Awesome photo BillyBuff - that is the same lens that I have.

Thank you all for the tips. I am about to head outside and play around with it for a little bit and try to get a good feel for it!
