I found out yesterday that not only do I have to work Christmas Eve (expected that because I always work Sundays), but I have to Christmas Day, too. On top of that, I have to work New Year's Eve. The schedule isn't out yet for New Year's Day, but I wouldn't be surprised if I have to work that day, too. Our manager scheduled everyone to work Christmas Day, but she only scheduled everybody for 3 or 4 hours, max. A normal shift is 6-8 hours. One guy even works 10 hours at a time certain days. I would much rather have a full shift on one days and then not have to work the other days. UGH. So am I the only one with a stinky holiday schedule or are there others that can wallow in my misery when my friends are at the football game and my family is having flippin steak dinner (I do get to eat that when I get home, which I guess isn't too bad) on Christmas Eve and my family is chilin' and exchanging presents on Christmas Day while I'm stuck working....a flippin' 4 hour shift!

But thats okay, though, because tomorrow me and a bunch of friends are going to dinner (which will be amazingly fun) and Tuesday will be amazing, too. Can't tell yall bout that now because I was sworn to secrecy, but I'll tell ya all about it Tuesday night! LOL.

Just pretend you are a CM - The parks are open evey holiday so they have to work those days too.

LOL. That's not a bad idea! Unfortunately, we won't be nearly as warm or busy as the CMs will be.

Maybe your family will work around your schedule and not open presents during the 4 hours that you are gone :confused3

I hope it works out :grouphug:

Can you switch some shifts with someone so that you each have an 8 hour shift only one of the two days? Like you take their 4 hours one day and they take your 4 hours the other day?

Kimya

Sorry you have to work on Christmas.

Holidays off is one of the perks of being a teacher...thank goodness!!

Do you at least get paid time and a half? My brother works at a grocery store and he volunteered to work to get the 'extra' money on thanksgiving. I'm sure your parents can work opening presents and stuff around your work schedule.

I think working 4hrs is ok at least you can rearrange the day to be with your family most of the day. I would hope they could postpone gift opening at the very least until you are there or before you go. And Lunch could be a dinner instead and vice versa. If you have to work 8-12 hrs you completely miss the holiday.

Thanks for the advice. Can't really switch shifts with anybody because the only person I could switch with (she owes me one LOL) I'm working with and I would have to find someone that has consecutive hours as me. I'm closing both days (only till 6 on Christmas Eve and then I don't know when on Christmas, hopefully it will be earlier than the usual 930). I don't know about time and a half. She offered it if anybody volunteered, but I don't know if anybody volunteered so she might not still be offering it. I getting the stinky schedule is part of being the "true" newest person.

DH is an ER physician. Our girls are 9 & 11 now and he has to work the day before Christmas Eve, Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, all 12 hour shifts, all 8AM -8PM. :( Our girls are no happy at all, especially our younger DD9. I won't be cooking which is good for me, we'll go to SIL's (his sister) for Christmas lunch. I'm jsut thankful that they are as old as they are and this is the first time he's been hit like this. No holiday pay either, he gets straight time regardless of when it is.

What is open on Christmas? Where do you work?

Restaurants, hospitals, some gas stations, hotels, grocery stores, airports, bus stations, casinos, movie theaters to name a few.

Can you tell I don't get out much on Christmas? lol.

I can feel your pain. I work in a hospital and we used to "volunteer" for the holidays. The sign-up sheet would go up at the beginning of the year and you would sign up for what you wanted to work. If it got too close to the holiday you would be assigned. That rarely happened. We then got new bosses and they picked "teams" to work and assigned holidays. They did split the holidays up so you only work the same one every 3 years but last year was my first Christmas having to work. We work 6A-6P. I have a DS10 and DD8. I was able to find someone with "later" plans who worked till 10AM for me so I at least got to see the kids opening presents.

I have to work on Christmas Eve and Day too! I'm hoping to get New Year's off . . . we'll see!

I feel your pain. :grouphug: I spent 5 years in retail. I worked every Christmas Eve until 11pm. (Which really ended up being about midnight because the store was so messy.) Then I would work inventory on the day after Christmas which would mean I had to be there at 4am!
One year I ended up closing New Years Eve NIGHT then opened on New Years DAY! I was not a happy camper and truly hated that job.

Do I need to explain why I was glad to be done with them? Lots of :grouphug: to you. It stinks now, but you will be done with it one day.

wow, that's a bummer :guilty: I'm sure somebody wil be very grateful that he's there, and you're all troopers for being flexible about it. I'm an RN who does triage and I will be working Christmas Day 7-3, New Years Eve & New years Day. i also will be working every weekend in December except Christmas Eve. :confused3 Yeah, it's inconvenient and my kids don't like it, but I remind them that I'm a nurse and I have to take care of sick people. People don't stop getting sick just because it's Christmas. In fact, if they come to the ER on Christmas, you KNOW they're sick! On the bright side, it usually weeds out the baby's-been-constipated-for-a-month crowd

I know what it's like.

I worked at a video store many years ago and the owner insisted on being open every day of the year. So, since I was the newest employee I got stuck working Christmas Day. Thankfully we didn't open until noon, and closed at 4:00 so it wasn't a long shift but I know there weren't many people who came in to rent a movie that day and they lost money because it cost more to pay me and have the lights on and heat turned up!!

Ridiculous to have a stupid video store open on Christmas Day, gads!!

posting a response to this thread. My boss just came to me yesterday afternoon to tell me I'm working the 23,24th and 25th.I was very, very upset and said I would not work Christmas Day.And she said if I don't work it they'll be repercussions...Is she kidding? I work one weekend a month in their dept. and two days a week in another dept! What is she going to do? Fire me???
Anyway it's only from 4-7am on all three days but I still do not want to work Christmas Day morning.I know it's time and a half: $18 hour but it's just not worth missing the one time of the year I truly enjoy.
I'm going in this morning and asking another lady there if she'll work it for me.
Wish me luck.I'll probably cry if she say's 'no'...
Debbie
