Just finished my greens and black eyed peas-Bring on the New Year!

Here in the south, blackeyed peas symbolize prosperity for the New Year, while the greens symbolize money.

ribs, kraut, mashed potatoes, and i made the yummiest Black eyed peas, w/ rice and andouille sausage. I would have eaten greens, but no one else would have, so I didn't bother making them.

Same here -- Cabbage, Ham, Potatoes & Carrots in one bowl -- Black eyed peas on the plate. Yum - bring on 2010.

I just had collard greens today. No black eye peas the stores was sold out them a week ago.

Yep, we had our fried chicken, black eyed peas, collard greens and homemade corn bread for dinner. My son hates black eyed peas, but I talked him into at least 2 spoon fulls! Nothing wrong with covering all our bases!

I had no trouble finding the greens (we like turnip greens), but I had to go to three stores before I found black eye peas at Kroger. At the two Publix I went to first, you could walk up to the counter or frozen food section and see the big hole and know before looking further that was where the BE peas used to be! Kroger had plenty! This was yesterday-nothing like putting if off until the last minute!

We had our greens and peas. Hope we have a better year coming than the one we just ended!:goodvibes

My mother was from Oklahoma and would always make black eyed peas on New Years day. They weren't very good, but dunno if my mother wasn't a very good cook, or black eyed peas just aren't particularly tasty.:confused3

We had ours. :cool1: My dd doesn't like black eyed peas but she ate one bite to be on the safe side. She likes collard greens so that was easy for her. DS wouldn't touch either one...we tried to talk him into it but no go!

I have always eaten saurekraut and pork on new years day as far back as I can remember, I just looked it up and it is a german tradition, I guess that makes sense since I am half german:rotfl:

Where does the green and black eyed peas tradition come from I have never heard of that one?

My biological sister was telling me about the black eyed peas thing today so I went out and bought some. I guess our store was plenty stocked since we're not in the south.

Anyway, I made pork chops, cabbage & noodles, collard greens and black eyed peas. I bought sauerkraut but forgot to warm it up. Oh well. I think our other bases were covered. :thumbsup2

I made a point to NOT have any of that this year. I made potato cheese soup.

My Dh has made all the traditional things every year and none of those things have ever come true...money, etc. So...I decided to take a risk and do none of it.

had blackeyed peas, turnip greens, pork chops and cornbread. i've been reading the cornbread thread and couldn't wait to have some! about the blackeyed peas, i don't like them either but i always eat some just to be on the safe side. happy new year!

I made both and partook of an abundance! Although, we were told growing up that the peas symbolize coins. I can't get my Yankee DH to eat either, so he had peas and applesauce with his ham.

I also didn't do any laundry, ironing or cleaning today, other than the dishes. That's another superstition in the family.

I southern girl form Georgia and you didn't have greens and peas on New Year's Day?

Aren't you scared you'll invoke the wrath of the "peas and greens" gods?

We had ours!

Definitely. My Mom always told us that we were NOT allowed to wash cloths on New Years Day.
