Just finished my greens and black eyed peas-Bring on the New Year!

I southern girl form Georgia and you didn't have greens and peas on New Year's Day?

Aren't you scared you'll invoke the wrath of the "peas and greens" gods?

We had ours!

LOL!!

First of all I HATE any kind of greens!!! So I really just prevented my DH from eating them. I don't care for black-eye peas either but aI can swallow them!!

I also did several loads of laundry!! I have never heard that one before but oh well...too late now.

Last year 2009 was a horrible year. We cooked and ate (or at least DH did ) all of those things last year so I was being stubborn and did not want it in the house at all.

Only time will tell!!!

I think the BE peas and greens sound great!

Can anyone share how you prepare yours? I know I can google it and come up with a billion recipes, but I'm looking for some time-tested, family-approved recipes.

TIA!

to olena: i didn't do any cleaning, laundry or sweeping either. my gm and mom said this was a bad thing. i'm a true southern girl in that respect.

No cleaning, sweeping, laundry here either. Made ham, greens, BE peas and mac and cheese for dinner. Can't buck tradition around here!

I made both and partook of an abundance! Although, we were told growing up that the peas symbolize coins. I can't get my Yankee DH to eat either, so he had peas and applesauce with his ham.

I also didn't do any laundry, ironing or cleaning today, other than the dishes. That's another superstition in the family.

Why didn't you tell me about this one!!!??? I did laundry yesterday and I didn't have to?

I have also heard that the BE peas represent coins. I am not born in the south so I googled the traditions to see. A few sites said the peas were for prosperity, but I like the idea of coins and dollars!

For those who don't like black eye peas, the best way to eat them is when they are cooked with lots of ham hocks or some other disgusting smoked pork byproduct! I had mine over white rice-Hoppin John!

Do y'all use pepper sauce (hot pepper vinegar) over your greens...I LOVE that!

I first saute some bacon until almost crisp and then add onion until tender then add the black eyed peas. Not the most healthy way but good. We added a little hot sauce at the table.

Greens are good cooked with a smoked turkey wing, onion, a little apple cider vinegar and brown sugar. :thumbsup2 The brown sugar gives the Collards a less bitter taste.

To cook the black eyed peas, I start by browning a couple of peices of bacon, then add the peas and enough water to cover with about an inch over. Add plenty of salt and cook until tender. But I think Bush's canned with bacon are really good and this is what we had yesterday. :rolleyes1 But I really don't care for canned collard greens at all, only fresh. I start out with a ham hock or good sized peice of ham and bring to boil add the greens and again a good amout of salt and cook for a few hours. I use a liberal amout of ham, I really like ham peices in with the collards, gives a great flavor. The key to cooking greens is you have to cook them a good long time, they get more tender and sweeter that way. If you want a less fattening method you can use smoked turkey leg if you want....I never do but I've heard it's good. These recipes are the way my mama and both my southern grandmas made them btw.
