Just diagnosed with a large ovarian cyst...I need surgery

Awww I'm so sorry you're having to go through this. Prayers for an easy recovery. Do take it easy! AND congrats on that great weight loss! Way to go gal! :grouphug:

Praying for you that all goes well. :grouphug:

I had a cyst removed several years ago, grapefruit size, but they were able to do laparoscopy.

Just a few months ago I was having pain, and figured it must be another cyst. I had a CATscan, they said it was a dermoid this time, pretty good size (over 3 inches) I had the surgery a month ago, turns out it wasn't a cyst at all, but fluid build-up in one fallopian tube, doc was even surprised when he got in there and saw what it was.

Anyway, I understand about being off of the exercise. I lost a good amount of weight over the last few years, and didn't want to get away from my workouts for too long.

Just listen to your body, when you're able, start back SLOWLY and just increase your exercise a little at a time.

Good luck, let us know how it all turns out. :sunny:

I just had a complete hysterectomy 2 weeks ago. They cut from the belly button down. Cyst was larger than they thought. Had surgery on Tuesday, was home Thursday. Only pain medicine in the hospital was 2 tylenol. They had me up and walking the next day. It wasn't as bad as anticipated. Living with me before surgery was he**. I was a basket case. Good luck. You will recover quickly. You are in my thoughts and prayers.

My daughter had the exact same problems when she was 14! She also had to have the large incision because of the cyst. The endometriosis had attached outside the uterus in different areas. Unfortunately they could not remove it from some areas because of her age, the scar tissue would cause more problems later. They had to force her to take a pain pill afterwards, she really wasn't in much pain after the surgery compared to what she went thru before the surgery.
Like so many said the main thing is to take it real easy afterwards.

I had a complete hysterectomy, cyst removed and endrometriosis removed. Mine actually was outpatient, because I wanted to go home about 20 hours after having it done, so doc said if I wanted to go he'd discharge me. I was up and walking about 3 hours after surgery. And waxing my camper about 30 hours after surgery...(not the high or low parts hubby did those, I did the middle) I have had 4 surgeries in my life and they have all been easy for me. I have the big ole scar from belly button down. I'd say my recovery was unusual because now almost 7 years later my docotr tells me I am the only person he knows to have it outpatient. But trust me, it is not that bad.

:goodvibes Hope all goes well with your surgery and those taking care of you do a good job. I had a dermoid removed but it was during my c/s so I'm sure that adds some pain to the recovery. I also had ankle surgery this past winter and I wanted to say I sympathize with your concerns about getting out of your gym routine. While your are restricted on exercise remeber that you will need to adjust your calories...down. Good luck. :flower:

All these posts are very comforting, and so surprising how common it is! thanks everyone.

I'm just now finding this, Jill. I will say a little prayer for you that the surgery is easy and that you make a full and quick recovery.

I've had abdominal surgery twice for both cysts and endometriosis. I'm not going to tell you that it won't be quite painful for a few days but if you get up and move around as much as you can, you will heal a lot more quickly.

Keep us posted?

Katholyn

I had an ovarian cyst burst when DS was 5 mos. old. I woke up on a Sunday morning, in excruciating pain, and ended up in the ER. Dr went in laporoscopic and saw what had happened, and then had to go in along the bikini line (I was never to wear a bikini anyway.. ) . While it was painful for a day or so, I had also had endometriosis before being pregnant with DS, so this was nothing in comparison. Dr needed to repair the one ovary, and remove a "chocolate" cyst from the other. Said there wouldn't be any problem getting pregnant again, if we wanted..........she was right......6 mos later we were pregnant with DD. :goodvibes > The worst part, was that the Dr didn't want me lifting more than 20 pounds, and DS was over that at 5 mos. My terrific MIL babysat for both of us....DH drove me and the baby to her house in the morning, and she took care of us until he picked us up after work.

Katholyn, thank you for the reassuring, kind words. I have my surg. consult meeting with the surgeon this Wednesday. I'll know everything then. I won't book the surgery till after Christmas, the pain has subsided the last few days so I could start my Xmas shopping. I want to wrap everything and put the tree up and get it all done before the pain comes back, cuz I know its just a matter of another couple of weeks again.

Elaine, thanks for sharing your story. Hopefully mine won't burst! That would be awful.
Thanks again everyone.

my sister's friend had a cyst the size of a grapefruit removed when she was about 16. she felt bad one day and went to the hospital where they found it. it seems pretty common. good luck. i hope the surgery goes well and that you are back on your feet quickly.

i had a bartholins cyst taken care of this past may and that was very uncomfortable because of the place they had to do the incision, but i wouldn't change that week of pain for anything. it was much more painful living with this uncomfortable cyst than that week recovering.

{{big hugs}} Jill,

Know that my thoughts and prayers are with you for a successful surgery and quick recovery. My daughter had problems with quite a few very painful ovarian cysts and had the laporoscopic several times. Last time dr did the full abdominal to remove cyst and part of ovary. DD made out fine and was up walking in no time, but still a good 6 wk recovery till normal, with no driving, very limited steps, lifting, etc. Remember to be sure to do what the dr says and don't try to do too much. You are going to feel so much better when this is over! Try no to overdo it for the holidays. Thankfully, my daughter has had no probs since and went on to have a 3rd lil blessing. :goodvibes

Sandie, thanks so much. Its great to hear your daughter is doing so well. It won't surprise me if the doc wants to do a partial hysterectomy, but I'll find all that out on Wednesday. I've had my kids, so it won't bother me, but its the recovery I'm really not looking forward to. My DH will be a great help, for sure with the kids. Thanks again!
