Before we knew any better:

We first stayed at ASMO, 6 adults splitting 2 rooms. We were in Dalmation, with no view to speak of, but we were steps away from the bus stop, food courts, and it was quiet amidst Pop Warner days...

ASMU - one night only - we were way back in Rock Inn, parking lot view. FAR AWAY from everything. I would not have been happy if we had been staying for a longer time.

CSR - paid for standard view, got Casitas 5, lakeview. Very pleased.

Dolphin - requested best view available (gov't rate $129) and got 19th floor with views of Epcot, Boardwalk, and MGM. We spent hours staring out the windows.

Upcoming trips - VWL - never been there, only requested non-smoking. I'm afraid of getting the infamous non-balcony studio - but now I know not to "settle."

BCV - requested non-smoking - 5th floor, Epcot view first choice, Boardwalk/Lake view 2nd choice. We will see!

I have never asked for a special location or room number and I have been very very lucky. I'll never forget the time I stayed at ASmusic, we were then in the now prefered rooms in the calypso building. I could go on and one about each hotel but just wanted you to get the point, I have been very very lucky but then again I look at it that thie isn't my new home, just a vacation spot and no matter where I end up in the hotel I am still at Disney and going to have a great time. Oops, I forgot, I do request non smoking and queen beds or whatever, I cant use a queen, I go with my son

I don't think there is such a thing as a boardwalk/lake view at BCV. At the Beach Club, yes, but not at BCV. I think you can see the BCV pool, Epcot, or the woods on the Epcot side. If there are rooms that have a view of the boardwalk and the lake, they must be very small in number.

When staying at the CR and the Poly I didn't request a room and it always worked out fine. Had water view rooms all four times.
CS had a lovley view of the quiet pool.

We have only had two occassions where we received a bad location. One was at POR, we arrived late, had requested MB but were given AB. No problem, but the room was disgusting, it smelled like wet dog, a/c was having a problem and the wallpaper was coming off the wall. We called the FD ask to be moved and if possible to MB. The new room was wonderful it made us so happy.
The second time was last Dec. We had my father with us at FW and he cannot walk very far. I had sent in my request, but upon arrival the only thing they had was a pet loop. Read my comments about that on the camping board. Needless to say our site was too small and the loop disgusting. It took a call to a manager before they would agree to move us the next day and we were given a choice of which sites. Upon our return we wrote a letter regarding his helpfulness.

But on most of our request we have always been very pleased.
