BAGHDAD, Iraq - Saddam Hussein (news - web sites)'s sons Odai and Qusai were killed in a six-hour firefight Tuesday when U.S. forces surrounded and then stormed a palatial villa in this northern Iraqi town, a senior American general said.

"We are certain that Odai and Qusai were killed today," said Lt. Gen. Ricardo Sanchez at a news conference in Baghdad.


"They died in a fierce gunbattle," Sanchez added.


He told reporters that soldiers from the 101st Airborne Division were working on a tip from an Iraqi informant that the sons were present in the house.


When troops approached the building, gunmen inside opened fire with small arms. The "suspects barricaded themselves in the house" and "resisted fiercely," he said.

They have confirmed it is them. They had the #4 who was captured among those who identified them. They, of course, can't take his word alone so other IDs were done. One of them has a titanium femur and the other has distinguishing facial characteristics. They also had information from Iraqis that took them there in the first place.

Tomorrow's briefing will have evidence to present to the public.

Now, if they can get Papa.

I wonder if they can collect the $30 million reward offered for the two? I'm not sure it said "alive only". $30 million is a lot to us - to them it's an even larger unimaginable sum. And I bet Uncle Sam doesn't get a share.

Reports are that the sound of celebration gunfire can be heard all around Baghdad. As one reporter put it "The father was feared, but the sons were hated."

Hopefully this will take a lot of wind out of the sails of the "dead-ender's" that are giving the troops trouble. Also, a lot of Iraqis are cautious about giving support to the US for fear of Saddam and his sons re-taking control. But the heirs are now toast.
