Just can't justify it... staying onsite

40% for military discount? WOW!! AP discount is under 10% for the dates I'm interested with a Premium AP.

I'm not 100% sure it is 40%, but is very good, I think it is the best discount they offer and one of the few that they offer on the suite also.

It is 40% for the Armed Forces Salute discount but you have to ask for that by name. Disneyland also has a "standard" 10% military discount. If you call and ask for the "military discount", 9 times out of 10, you will get the 10% quote. It has happened to me several times. I always have to specify the AFS discount.

And, there is no discount on suites. Suites WILL come up when the CM does a search, but they are always rack rate, even though they show as "discounted."

My guess is that the ONLY room available for the PP who was quoted $1400 for one night was indeed a suite, and it probably DID come up when the CM did the military discount search. This would happen if all other room categories made available with the discount were all booked up. The hotel may still have rack rate availability but nothing for her dates in July at the discount.

I was quoted like $1800/night once for one room at the Yacht Club because the only room available was the presidential suite and it came up after the CM did the military discount search. That was the same quote I got online when I tried doing a search to check availability, so I know it was rack rate.

Seems sort of disrespectful to the Premium AP holder, huh!!!

Oh my.............. I don't think it should be viewed as disrepectful, I think they are just very supportive of their military. It may be just a small perk for someone willing to put their life on the line for our nation.

I agree. I was just making a joke about the comparison of the two discounts.

I am in the population that is just so happy to be able to afford to GO to Disneyland every year, anyway I can swing it is ok by me. ;)

We grew up staying at Best Westerns and the like. Early in my adult life, we were still staying at the cheapest motel we could find. But after one particularly scary (and disgusting) stay at a hotel across the street from DL, we began staying exclusively at Hilton properties (including Embassy Suites).

I have a "special" birthday coming up in a couple of years and I am considering splurging with a DLH stay for at least a couple of nights. But in truth, I'm not sure I will be able to part with the additional $$ for that splurge, even if I save up for it. I will just keep thinking I would have been just as happy at our usual hotel with an extra $500+ in my pocket. :flower3:

My DS (13) has never stayed at a "scary" hotel, but he also has never stayed at a Disney property (except for Aulani). So he doesn't know any different. His Disneyland trips all include staying at Embassy Suites in Garden Grove and catching the shuttle to DL. But he does go every year and we stay for over a week. So the trade off for us is we go more often and stay longer than we could if we stayed on property. It works for us! :goodvibes

I don't think I would enjoy offsite. We just got back last night after 4 nights at PPH. We have stayed at GCH, which we walked through every day several times a day on this trip. We do use our room and take breaks, swim etc. We also use EMH every day, that was the best way to get a lot done before it got hot and crowds became unbearable. The customer service at DLR is amazing, our room was ready at 10:48am. We did early check in and by the time were were organized and ready to drop bags at the bell desk, they called my phone and told me our room was ready. pixiedust: I also like that they could take my ARES park hopper voucher and give us our tickets during check in.

I just went through the same thing. Really wanted to stay on site, and was thinking of renting DVC and go to AKL since we do need the extra space and full kitchens. Ended up booking at the Wyndham bonnet creek, which is on Disney property and if you have a car, which we always do, is just like staying onsite in terms of location. We saved over 2000 and got a 3 bedroom instead of 2. That said we will not use EMH ever, and rather get around in a car with a toddler, so some of the onsite perks just don't work for us anyway.

The GCH rooms with day beds have a wonderful view..... of the parking lot and the DLH/PPH... with that, I would agree. That being said, the GCH is the only hotel with balconies. The balcony is an extension of the room, and are never dark ;) With the balcony included you will see the rooms aren't as cramped as you would have previously thought.
I am going to disagree with you. Even with the balcony, the rooms felt extremely cramped to us.
There are indeed some great views up high to be had at the PPH. I'm sure NORMALLY you are going to pay through the nose for those views however. I too have had great views at the GCH.... paying for a standard room and getting free upgrades.
50% or the rooms have a view. I've gotten PPH, with a view, for $149. I love everything about the hotel... except... The elevators.

No, no park tickets, nothing. JUST the room, and it was even a regular room since we're taking my MIL and we can get 2 regular rooms instead of a suite. I never call, I just check the room rates online, but a military family friend of mine said I should call because she gets great military rates, so I called. that was the quoted rate for military. One room. So, I thought, maybe they only have a certain number of rooms set aside for military, so I asked about the AP discount and it was almost 2k per night.
I really think you misunderstood something. I have a 3 bedroom suite book at the DLH for the 4th of July week for $1075 a night.

Now, 2 view rooms at the GCH the week of july 15 would be about $1400 a night together as there are limited number of rooms left available that week. I booked that same time frame a few weeks ago at the DLH and my room rate is $226 including taxes per room.

Malcon10t -

That's exactly what I was wondering about what the PP said, but I don't think I phrased it properly in whatever my last post was. I thought that maybe the CM on the phone assumed that 2 rooms were needed upon initial inquiry and gave the PP a quote for 2 rooms (at the GCH), even though the PP said that the rate given was for just one room.

Either that, or there was just a glitch in the reservations system that caused that crazy rate to pop up.

There is just no way that $1,400 could be the per night rate for one basic, standard, 'nothing special' kind of room -- at any of the 3 DLR hotels -- not even during the peak summer or holiday seasons. They're expensive hotels, but not quite that horrible.

Also I agree with you about the GCH -- even in the room/rooms I had with balconies, it still felt cramped (way too cramped for 3 adults, which was the scenario the first time I stayed at the GCH). I looked around and thought, "Okay...there's no floor space." At least I feel as though I can move around in the PPH rooms.

And I am in full agreement again with your assessment of the PPH -- everything is great but the slow-to-arrive elevators, and I can even live with those!

We've stayed with three adults and two children in a regular GCH room without issue. Maybe we are just used to smaller living accommodations. I live in a historic home, which as you are probably aware is smaller by a LOT compared to modern homes.

All I know is that is what she told me. I asked for a standard room, and tol dher we would need two. she said there was only one room available, and it was 1400 per night. So, like I said, I thought that it must mean that the military rates were sold out. So I asked for the AP discount and it was even more. I'm not lying, and I'm usually pretty bright. ;)

I hope you don't feel like anyone thinks you're lying, I think we're just trying to think it through with you. I've stayed in a 2 bedroom suite at DLH over Christmas week and it wasn't that much, even with concierge added. I think you should call again and see what happens. Get a rate with one room and a rate with two rooms, just so you can compare. There's just no way...

Just curious how you got the $226/night rate for July at the DLH. Is this an AP rate or a military discount rate or what? Thanks.
