Just can't justify it... staying onsite

We've done both and have stayed at the DLH several times, the PP once, and offsite at the HOJO and the Tropicana. We'll be staying at the BWPPI this fall. Overall, the offsite hotels are a much better value for us since we typically just use our rooms for sleeping and love the shorter walk to the Harbor hotels. I don't see the EMH as a huge benefit and we've never had any especially magical experiences at the onsite hotels like others seem to have.

Thanks! This is basically why I asked, to hear from those who have tried both. I know some enjoy the "extras" at the onsite hotels and the EMH but it seems like others were disappointed. I'm really worried about spending so much more and not getting the value out of it that I would expect for the extra money. For now, I'm content to stay offsite, especially after asking and reading about others experiences (especially those who have done both). We stay at the parks pretty much all day and only go back to sleep so at this point, it works just fine to be offsite (always within walking distance however. We tried once to use a hotel that we had to shuttle from and hated it).

Maybe once the kidlets are grown and moved out, DH and I can justify splurging for a GCH stay or something. I can wait 10 more years right... ? :rolleyes1

I hear ya! I would LOVE to stay on site at some point, but if it comes down to waiting an extra TWO years for a trip so that we can afford that, I pass.

On our last trip we stayed in a wonderful VRBO property that was literally right next to Disneyland Hotel. We thoroughly enjoyed our 10 minute walk through downtown Disney to the front gates and it cost us WAY less then a Disney property would have.

Maybe one day we'll splurge if my husband gets a big bonus or something, otherwise it's offsite for us :)

Our first trip last year (when DD was 3) we stayed offsite at Residence Inn Maingate for 3 nights. It was a great place but we did waste a lot of time walking back and forth and we were not up for waiting for ART. We are early risers and would go for rope drop (and 1 day we had MM), then back to the room midday for a few hours, then back to the parks for a couple more.

Our 2nd trip a few months ago we stayed at GC for 2 nights and definitely love love loved the location. The hotel was nice and we enjoyed the pool but the real benefit for us was location and comfort since we did like spending time hanging out in our room and at the pool. We could never do a park all day long and DD goes to bed at 7 (closer to 8:30 when we travel) so we do focus on getting as much done as possible in the AM and then relax and take it as it goes in the afternoon.

We're going back in August for 4 nights and are splitting it - 2 nights at HoJo (we will do MM at DL w/ our park hopper) then 2 nights at GC - I will check in to GC at 6am so we can do EMH that day, so we'll get 3 EMH for staying 2 nights. I'm really looking forward to trying out HoJo to see if the added walk time will make a big difference to our enjoyment. I must say that CA entrance to the Grand after being in the park is so wonderful.

We are planning to upgrade our hoppers to AP's - this trip will determine if we will do a bunch of future trips w/ the AP and stay offsite or do 1/2 to 1/3 the # trips but stay onsite.

Could you give the link to the VRBO rental, please?

Thank You! We always use VRBO in Hawaii.

Thanks! I am familiar with the website, we have used it several time for travel to Maui and Kauai..... but I was wondering about the specific unit rented, location, etc... I understand if it's against DIS boards rules to post a link.

Thank You,

I agree! We stayed at this same place once when our kids were younger and while it was very roomy with a lot of good space I felt the same about the location. We have some very found memories of that trip but it didn't seem to make up for the ease of staying on site. It also didn't seem like it was very much cheaper. Enjoy that youngster sounds like you have many happy trips ahead of you.

Let me preface this post by saying we have stayed offsite many times at the Candy Cane Inn and really love it there. I'm sure we will return in the future. It fits our budget and our needs.

BUT... we stayed at the Grand Californian for the first time two weeks ago and fell head over heels not just for the hotel, but more so the location.

One perfect example, one evening we rode Soarin' at the end of the night. We exited the ride at 9:56 and my husband said he wasn't feeling well. So we said no problem let's head back to the hotel. In a few steps, we were at the entrance to the GCH. DH was happy he could go rest so quickly. But even better than that, as we were headed in the hotel my son and I said, "let's try to run to Radiator Springs and ride it!"

So, literally at 9:58 we started fast walking to Carsland from the GCH. I told my son not to be disappointed if we didn't make it. We slow jogged down the street in Carsland with two CMs at the end of the road cheering us on. They said "pedal to the medal, you can make it, go go go!" At 10:02 we were through the entrance to RSR and they closed the ride right behind us! We were the last two through and the last to ride for the night!

After we got off the ride, Carsland was totally empty and lit up so beautifully. We took our time leaving the area and took awesome pictures all up and down the street.

Then we swung back by the hotel, picked up my husband who was feeling better and headed over to DLR until midnight.

Staying onsite allowed us those options. I was glad we got a chance to do it. Even if it's the only time we ever stay there, it was totally worth it!

I don't see the problem here. Either one stays on site, or they don't. It's that simple.

Hey everyone! It's great to be back... and the fabulous reason I'm back is because we just booked our third trip to the Mouse House :cool1:. We're so excited to go during the holiday season this time (Dec 3-9). We've never seen Disney all done up for Christmas but I hear it's absolutely incredible. :santa: So after our last trip, DH and I swore that the next time we go, we were going to stay onsite. We've never done that before and really wanted our kids to have that experience. However, when we started pricing it out and realizing that it would cost about $1,000 more just to stay onsite, we just can't justify it. We could afford to but we just keep thinking about how little time we spend in the hotel and how much $1,000 could buy. If staying across the street means we have $1,000 more left in our savings (for next trip!)... then it's a no-brainer for us. How do so many justify it? Is it really worth it when you aren't even there most of the time? This may shock you all but I'm not even a cheap person! :goodvibes

We can't justify it either as we are only in the room to sleep and shower. I don't think it is cheap to say you think the money is better spent in a different way. It is a personal choice and to others it is worth it for the experience and there are a lot of different elements that come into play to make it a valuable part of someone's holiday.

Have a great trip!

Staying in a resort hotel is the 'make or break' of the trip for us… in the sense that we could never afford it, so we have to stay off site in order to even visit Disneyland :(

We love Disneyland so much that we don't really care though. We stay in the hotel to sleep, and we don't worry too much about it… but it is definitely a wish to one day be able to stay on site… maybe in 10 years like others are saying… maybe for our 25th wedding anniversary! (in 15 years…)…

You are so lucky to even be contemplating the option! We have stayed at the hojo before, and are staying there again, and the walk does sort of drag on at the end of the night, but we just cope with it. We have also stayed at the Anaheim RV Village twice… in a tent! We were just so happy to be at Disneyland, we didn't care :)

All I have to add to this thread is this:

That's great!

We're on-site people too. There nothing like coming back to the Grand after a long magical park day to first the jacuzzi and then the Hearthstone Lounge for an app and a nightcap. Honestly. its one of my favorite parts of the trip. Or laying by the pool at the Disneyland Hotel, ordering Mai Tais and relaxing while the kids swim. The shops, the service, the CMs, the location, it's all part of the Disney experience for us.

EMH is a great perk too. The Grand's proximity to DCA is literally steps away. Its fantastic! Kids love to ride GRR over and over and then run up to the room and change. The hotel is right there. Now that the kids are older, the freedom to allow them to venture off but still be on the property is pretty sweet.

To each his own for sure but just wanted to share the reasons its justifiable for me. The reasons are numerous. :goodvibes

We will be staying at the DLH for the first time this October. I agree it is really hard to justify....the only reason I am able to is because I am a travel agent and can get the rooms half price! The main pros to staying onsite will be the early entry and the emmersion into Disney. As much as I love Disneyland it is harder to get that escaping the real world feeling when staying at an offsite hotel.

You don't always get what you pay for. Sometimes you get less. Which is why we will probably never stay onsite. I would not get out of it what I paid. Would I love to stay there? Sure. But not for what they are charging.

When we travel as a family, we get every penny of value staying at the GCH. Its perfect for us.

The Grand coupled with the density of DLR = amazing opportunities by staying onsite, and more specifically at the grand.

The world is full of weird people.

Well, then I am the Queen of the Weird People, whoever, because I greatly prefer the more spacious PPH rooms (with daybeds) over those cramped, dark GCH rooms (many of which do not have daybeds)!:rotfl2:

I did like the short walk from the GCH to DTD or the parks the last time I stayed there, but the first time I stayed there I did not have a short walk. And I, of course, love the lobby -- that whole hearth/lobby environment wins out over the PPH or the DLH.

Also, I have gotten better perks -- and much better views!! -- staying at the PPH than I did at the GCH. The perks and views were based on good timing and luck, but I didn't have that same good timing and luck when I stayed at the GCH, so the PPH wins that battle for me! The PPH has made a couple of mistakes here and there, but I still prefer that hotel. But I'm just weird, I guess.

That's not to say that I wouldn't stay at the GCH at some point in the future if the planets aligned -- I am sure I would -- but I am just not crazy about the rooms.

(I have stayed at the DLH too -- a lot -- but it was a very, very long time ago. I loved it when I used to stay there, though.)

Hi, SweetAlex!

You know, I can't mention too many more pros or cons (or justifications) to staying onsite other than what's already been mentioned. I can add in my two cents, though.

As Jamie and others have said, there is really no right or wrong answer. Everyone agrees -- even the onsite fans -- that the hotels are very expensive. So then it comes down to whether or not it is worth it. For some people, the hotel is part of the whole experience, whereas others view it as only a place to shower and sleep and that's it. That's not something that is right or wrong; it's just how people view their trips.

Also, depending on how one tours the parks -- some go at breakneck, commando speeds and others stroll about more leisurely -- there may be more room in the schedule to spend at the hotel than in other folks' schedules.

A big reason why I love to stay onsite is because I already live in SoCal (Los Angeles) -- I am roughly 45 minutes from DLR on a non-traffic day. It's fairly close, comparatively speaking. I need to feel that I am "escaping" the city somehow, so I can totally immerse myself in the Disney magic. When I go to DLR and have a "special" trip (like for the holiday season, every year) with a hotel stay, I want to stay onsite because it is part of the Disney Bubble.

To stay at one of the places on Harbor or nearby (which I might do at some point in the future; never say never) would not seem like much of an "escape" to me. I need to feel as if I am staying somewhere that I couldn't access closer to home, in my own neighborhood! Staying at DLR hotels makes it more of a vacation for me, rather than just a 45-minute ride away from home. Does that make sense?

I like to be on Disney soil from the moment I step out of the car to the second I get in the car to go home. I like waking up and going to sleep on Disney property. I love coming back to the hotel for a break, or after a long, tiring day, and being greeted with a friendly "Welcome home," or a warm smile. My views from my last several PPH rooms have been awesome, and I gravitated to the window every time I was in the room. I like hunting for hidden Mickeys in the carpeting, bedding and details around the room and in the hotel property. I love the walk back to the hotel through DTD, especially during the holidays.

Overall -- and I have said this in other threads about this subject in the past -- there is an intangible, indescribable feeling attached to staying onsite...for those who "get it." I am not expecting someone who doesn't want to stay onsite to set foot in one of the onsite hotels and suddenly get swept up in that same feeling. Again, it's really more of a "thing" that people who love staying onsite already know and understand.

When onsite, guests smile at each other as they pass in the hallways or lobbies. People actually talk to each other in the elevators (which doesn't happen in my neighborhood). Cast Members -- from Valet to Bell to Mousekeeping to the ones manning the front desk -- are delightful and helpful, and will usually go above and beyond the call of duty to accommodate guests. Mostly everyone is in a good mood. It's as if everyone has been kissed by that special Disney magic and is caught up in it...which is fine by me, as there are enough grumpy and miserable people to deal with in "real life."

And I guess that really sums it up. Staying onsite -- for me -- feels like I am getting away from real life. It completes and enhances the whole DLR experience for me.

I have stayed both onsite and offsite over the years. I pretty much never want to stay offsite again. We go max one time per year and have to fly to DLR so the cost of the hotel is only one part of the cost of a trip. So for us it's not a matter of staying offsite would equal more frequent trips.

For us, the DLH and GCH are just as much Disney as the parks and that is extremely important to us. We are the opposite of Commando visitors and spend a ton of time at the resort. It's always our goal leave DLR with our three young children relaxed and not exhausted. The whole entire reason we take a Disney vacation is for escape from the real world and immersion in the Disney Bubble. The only way for us to accomplish that at DLR is to stay onsite.

And as a side issue - I too am picky about the quality of the accommodations - I need a certain level of amenities for me to enjoy our vacation. Otherwise it honestly isn't worth the tremendous commitment of time and money and effort to get all 5 of us down there and back.

It is truly different for every family.
