Just cancelled and I'm bummed

Just had to cancel our September cruise. My cousin is scared to travel to the Caribbean due to the Zika virus. I'm so disappointed and just looking for some hugs I tried explaining to her that as long as we use common sense mosquito bite protection, we'll be fine (neither one of us is pregnant or planning on getting pregnant). My dad is an infectious disease specialist and also gave us the green light to go. But she was too afraid. I'm trying to respect her decision but I'm super annoyed at what I (and medical professionals!) consider to be a tad bit of an unreasonable overreaction.

Hope you all have fun on your upcoming cruises... Eat a chicken tender, play in the sand, and get giddy like a 5 year old while watching the fireworks for me!!

Why not plan a trip someplace north like Iceland or even a cruise to Canada?

We have a cruise booked in May leaving from Puerto Rico and my mother is BESIDE herself. I actually wanted my mom and her husband to go with us but she adamantly refused to even consider it and brings up Zika a lot. I don't know how I'm going to deal with another 11 months of her harassment. Thankfully, her attendance is not required for DH, DD and I to go on our own, but I'm sad she won't be joining us.

Wow, yes I would absolutely be annoyed with having to cancel for that reason too. I hope you find something else fun to do!

Ugh I'm sorry that she won't be going with you. I'm not trying to diminish the real risk that Zika poses to people in vulnerable populations, but people are tending to overreact without understanding the facts. I'm glad you get to go and I hope you have a blast!

I would have gone by myself or looked for another friend who comprehends risk as well as the reliability of believing in a brand new, magically-noticed, disease that has cropped up like this.

Is it just you and your cousin or were others coming? If there are others, cruise on! if not, find someone else to cruise with (another friend, family member, etc).

I am sooo sorry! It's so disappointing when you have to cancel a cruise (been there done that sadly). I hope you can plan something fun in September to make up for it...to me, part of the appeal of a trip is the planning and the anticipation...fingers crossed maybe there is a great substitute out there.

That is a real bummer, especially as the cruise was only 3 months away. Bug repellent, etc will likely keep you safe and it is frustrating to deal with someone that seems unreasonable to us. Kind of like that "germaphobe extroidonaire", of which we all seem to know one in our lives.

With regards to Zika, much still remains to be known. Other than the extremely serious hazard to pregnant women (about to be pregnant, and their potential baby daddies who could pass it on to their partners), there is the possibility of an increased risk of Guillain-Barre disease. This can be pretty serious and possibly debilitating. I have seen two relatives experience this particular disease (theirs was not caused by Zika) and it was something I can say I hope to never experience.

Thanks everyone for the hugs and support! I am slowly getting back over it. Thinking about heading to San Diego with a couple of girlfriends in November instead, which will be just as much fun! Will probably do a couple of nights in wine country too. Beach + booze = happy girls.

But nothing beats a Disney cruise, so maybe we'll head on a cruise next year. In the meantime, I'll be living vicariously through all of you!
