Hi all. I am so excited that we just sent back our paperwork to buy 210 pts at SSR!! I can't wait to go... Question: our use year is now February, but can I change it at this point? I now fully realize what the use year could do/not do for us, thanks to the discussions here. We generally will be taking trips in October/November, so if we have a trip scheduled for then, and cancel, we could potentially lose points that can't be banked within the 100%/6 month window. It seems like June may be better for us. What do you all think?

I would call and see but make sure you can still get the discount if it takes longer to redo the paperwork.

I would call right away and see what could be done.

The UY is part of the contract so you will have to complete new paperwork, but if they are offering June for SSR and that would work better for you, I would go for it.

From what I've gathered it's best to choose a UY where you will be able to Regularly Vacation within your 6 month banking window. Although you have the flexibility to go whenever.

I agree with Liferbabe -- call right now. What you want to do is really cancel your current purchase agreement and start all over.

It's true that Use Year will only come in to play when you cancel close to your travel date when it is at the end of your Use Year. However, if you plan to travel regularly (at least for now) in October/Nov., then you do have the least desirable of Use Years for that timeframe.

Just and FYI, June is not an available month, but you can get May. Check your Member Book, it lists available months on the chart that shows you the banking dates.

Be sure to remember that your $10 off per point is in exchange for your first year's usage. Since that first year ends in February, this is a pretty good deal! I do understand the inconvenience factor tho, and the possible cancellation problems. We also have the February use year (for BWV) but tend to like to get away for MLK weekend in January  and are using borrowed points for our planned getaway.

Just a reminder that it will probably be Seldom if ever that UY will matter to you. We have been members for 7 years, and have never had to cancel last minute. We have rescheduled, but that does not result in losing or banking points. We have the worst UY for our usualy travel times, but I don't worry about it. We usualy travel in January and have a March UY.

That's not the case with the current SSR promotion. You are referring to "Magical Beginnings", the program under which new DVC buyers can trade in their first year's points in exchange for a $5 or 10 (per point) credit toward their purchase.

With the SSR promotion that runs through 10/31, buyers get to keep their first year's points and still get the $10 pp credit (or use of Developer's Points toward a trip before SSR opens.)

I originally sent in my paper work for 200 pts. at SSR with a Feb. use year. I called 2 days later and told them to send the paper work again with a july 1 use year. They said no problem. That is better for me being I mostly travel sept thru dec.

Are you sure about this as my guide offered one or the other.

Not sure exactly what part of the post you are referring to. If it's about the promotions, then yes, the $10 per point credit OR developer's points are available. You do not get both.

However, taking advantage of the $10 pp credit does not require the purchaser to surrender the first year's points as is the case with Magical Beginnings.

I just purchased and got a June use year. the prior post said june is not available. Now I'm confused.

Thanks,
Frank

Congratulations and Welcome Home :bounce:

Call your guide and see if you can change the use year. If not, don't worry about it. I have use years that are not "optimum" for our travel habits and it does not worry us in the least. I suspect that others here are the same.

Good luck!

cosmocat ,
I would definately pursue getting your UY changed, too (if you can still get the same good deal). I don't know how often things come up that causes a person to reschedule or cancel, but I know I worry about it. We started out with a Feb UY--and last year we had most of our points on NYE! I did worry (it did turn out fine). Another aspect that didn't dawn on me is I know that in the future we will want to invite the extended family along--With the point totals being so high over NYE, we would have to bank and borrow to accomplish this. I would really, really worry if we had 3 years worth of points tied up!
Since we also like to visit during other times of the year and Feb UY will work out for those visits, I solved our problem by purchasing more points with different UYs. :)
Good Luck. (Keep us posted. )

June is a Use Year. The Use Years are: Feb, March, April, June, August, Sept., October and December.

My original post reads a little negatively. I didn't mean for it to read as if having this Use Year is disastorous. It's not. You may also find when/if your travel plans change to another time of year that the February Use Year is what works best. ;)

I'd suggest calling and seeing what your options are. However, I wouldn't "lose" anything just to get a different Use Year.
