First time poster. My wife and I just agreed on a price for 150 points at SSR. We bought in with the idea of trying to go to different DVC resorts like Hilton Head to avoid having "Disney World fatigue". With that said, is it really hard to reserve Hilton Head at any time during the summer months? I have a 10 day window to cancel without penalty. Please let me know if im overthinking this. Thanks

IMO you buy DVC for a discount on Disney resort costs and it's hard for me to include HH and VB on the Disney resort list. Using points at WDW or DL gives you the biggest bang for your buck, I would think that there are other timeshares offering beach properties at a much lower cost. Using SSR points at other resorts may sometimes be a challenge depending on the resort, room requested and time of year.

To Bill’s point, if you love the Poly and hope to stay at the Poly a lot, then you need to buy at the Poly. If you are fine with staying at SSR but would enjoy trying other resorts when they are available for the date and room type you want, then SSR is a great option.

Also, the room type you want can be very key to the 7mo booking window for non-Home resorts. Typically, the lower point value room types go first. However, my family has had very good luck booking 1BR and 2BR at other resorts with an SSR contract. For example we’ve had 3 Jambo House stays, 1 Kidani, a night at GF, BLT, and the Poly, BWV in July, and an upcoming stay at CCR this summer...all from SSR contracts.

It is really hard to book HH at seven months for the Summer. When we did it, we rented out our points, then rented points from David. There was a slight delta of a few dollars a point that I lost in this transaction, but I got my HHI room.

We have only enough points to go every other year, so we don't really get WDW fatigue. The 150 points we own is plenty for every other year in a two bedroom. In the other years, we've usually gone somewhere else - on cash and not using points. Other people rent out their points in their off years and use that profit to travel.

Yes, it's difficult to book HHI during the summer months. Any other time of the year is doable.

And that is especially true for studios and/or 1 bedrooms, because there are relatively few of them. If you want to regularly vacation at HHI during the summer months, you'll need to own there and book as soon as your 11 month window opens.

I would suggest buying where you will stay most. As others have mentioned, it appears that booking in the Summer months is more difficult. However, if you're only planning on going to HHI every other year and have some flexibility, I'd say SSR points would be fine. The general opinion here is to buy where you want to stay most. It appears as if in this case, that is a 50/50 proposition. Best on your decision

Considering your title has you wanting us to talk you off the ledge, not convincing you to jump off of it, I will add this positive. Summer is not the high time for DVC at Disney World, so you should be able to use those points to sleep around at different resorts over the years, especially if you want 1 BRs. Other years when you are burned out on Disney, you can rent those points out and use the cash to rent rooms at places like Hilton Head. If, after a few years you find you do not like that system, odds are pretty good you will be able to sell your membership for a profit.

Sleep around

If you bought SSR to stay at HHI then you might be disappointed. Summer months can be busy. I think later August might have better availability, but if you are flexible and can go there off season (April, May, Sept, Oct, Nov) then you should be able to use your points there.

I wouldn't worry about disney Fatigue just yet and even if you do and you don't want or can't use the points you can bank them to splurge on your next trip or you can rent them.

There are so many resorts to try at WDW and you also have HI to try as well. As long as you have a good handle on what you just purchased and you have some flexibility in when you travel i think you will really enjoy trying out all the different deluxe resorts. Split stays are something else to consider - so if you are going at particularly busier time - book your home resort at 11 months and then try to switch out a portion of your trip to try a different resort.

At least know that you made the right move and bought resale, especially with the recent increased in direct pricing. Use your contract for a few years and if it isn't working for you sell -- if the market remains good then you should make back most of what you paid in and you would have had a few trips too.

If you cannot get into dvc hhi, hhi even in summer is easy to trade in via RCI. So, if you don’t get hhi one year, then book thru rci for the next summer. Best luck with at least 1 year notice.
Also, early June and mid to late August are much easier at 7 months for dvc hhi.
