Just bought in - should I change home resort?

My wife and I bought in for 100 pts at $176/pt for PV while at WDW a couple weeks back. I am looking to expand on that with resale market, add 200 pts or so. I'm currently looking at AK or SS as they appear to be best value. My thinking is we like the AK resort, so that made sense to buy there for the add-on purchase.

My question is, since I am still within the "return window" of my original purchase, would it make sense to call and ask to move my points from PV, which we have never actually stayed at, to something that we HAVE stayed out and really like, such as AK or BLT? Will the point costs from Disney direct be LESS for AK or BLT or will the $176/pt be the going to rate to join at any resort at this point in time from Disney? If not, what are the estimate point costs for AK or SS or BLT from Disney?

I am seeing $95-105 for AK on resale market, $85-100 for SS, and $120-135 for BLT.

Just thinking for the same $17,600 I paid for the PV points, I could get 176 AK points perhaps!

Thoughts?

Oh, also worth noting, going into DVC sales thing without background info, I NEVER got the impression that there was any OPTION on the home resort. It seemed to me that only the PV was even available. I guess that is one of the "car sales" portions of the DVC? Trying to direct people to where the most inventory is residing?

I thought the “return” (recision?) period was only 10 days.

I think it’s the same.

As long as you’re willing to wait, you can ask for any home resort from Disney.

If you’re in the return period and have ANY hesitation, do it. The deal will be there in a week.

And you’ve noticed the resale market. Unless you have burning reasons to buy direct (most reasons don’t make sense objectively or financially, especially at this point with prices rapidly approaching double what I paid for bay lake in 2009 and let’s not even talk about the 90s), consider resale. Heavily.

They're not actively selling the other resorts. Points become available and they will sell them, but the inventory is at PVB, Aulani and Copper Creek right now.

BLT is 185 direct, AKL is 165 direct. Saratoga 145.

You would probably have to cancel the PV transaction and start over. Don't stress I did the same thing. Signed a Poly contract in March 2016, got home and decided it was the wrong purchase for us (no 1 or 2 bedroom options, we love BLT), and purchased BLT resale instead.

To be fair to DVC, it's not really a car sales thing when it comes to the sold out resorts. They get some points back through foreclosure, and ROFR and resell them, but it's not their primary goal. They'll take your money if you insist hard enough, though it make take a while depending on how many points you want to buy directly. Their primary goal is to sell the newer resorts with unsold inventory so they strongly direct people towards those resorts.

IF you can, cancel and do some more investigation then once you're better informed, you can make better decisions overall. It's much easier to add retail to resale than the reverse in most cases, esp for the Poly if that's what you want. Plus it'd be cheaper to add only 25 its retail with the rest resale. At 300 points or so I'd consider 2 home resorts unless you're looking at 3 BR options routinely or don't care where you stay. SSR will be the best value $$$ wise, BLT is likely second long term.

Not buying direct through Disney. As others have said, AKV is $165/pt direct from Disney. So, for your $17600 you could get 106 AKV points direct.

They didn't even offer you Copper Creek?

It sounds like you are past turn back and may be stuck, FWIW. But for BLT or AKV, resale is the way to go. Disney prices direct are significantly higher.

If you don't think you want the "home resort" priority for the Polynesian Villas then I would recommend canceling your purchase with Disney. Then I recommend taking the time to decide if you think you will be a Disney Vacation Club member who makes reservations 7 to 11 months in advance or if you will be making them under 7 months in advance. After that has been decided I think it will be easier for you to choose your home resort.

A WDW vacation is more than running to the parks, staying all day and night and repeating. As a DVC owner, you will have years of WDW/DVC vacations and the parks become, been there, done that. Owning resorts where you love to stay will become more important as time goes on.

DVD directs buyers to the resorts where they make the most money, new resorts, plus they want to deplete new resort sales inventory to justify the building of the next resorts.

I would ask why have you never stayed at the Poly -- Does it not interest you, too expensive, or what? Generally it is regarded as one of if not the best place to stay in all of Disney World. It is next to the TTC, monorail and boats which make it a transportation mecca. People were thrilled when the Poly came up for sale, tho disappointed there wasn't a traditional 2B offering, just Studios and Bungalows. So if you will fit in a Studio for the foreseeable future, the Poly is a great option. Once it sells out it will be hard to book at 7 mo because most owners will want the studios there. You can't compare to SS. They're not even in the same ballpark. AK isn't really an equal either since it's so far out of the way. But if you are a fan of the AK you could buy there for much cheaper. BLT is a great option. It's got the location benefits of the Poly for a lower cost. If you're not sure, cancel and decide when you're sure. But don't worry about liking the Poly. I think it's one of the resorts that will hold its value better than others because it's such an oasis in a prime location.

Here is a great example of how Disney builds something that will attract all people. We don't really care for the Poly, older buildings and very crowded.

In fact, a lot of complaints about these two things on the resort thread for Poly lately. While DVC vs. hotel side can be debatable (DVC units are on a different cycle and need to have different expectations anyway), the crowd stuff is pretty consistent. Poly itself is a big destination for people not staying there, and your common areas like the beach and GCH will always have a lot of people around who aren't resort guests.

Which is your favourite resort Bill? @disneynutz

We own, VGF, BLT, BCV, BWV, AKV and BRV. We only stay at BWV our number one, VGF, our number two, and BRV, our number three depending on how we feel about the refurb in a couple of weeks. The others are fine resorts, just not our favorites any more.

First, thanks everyone for the input here, I think it was valuable. In the end, we decided to keep the 100 points we purchased, as it gives us flexibility to try out PV if we want to, and also gets us in the door for Disney-based rewards and benefits, including lower cost tickets, annual passes, etc.

We also just had an offer accepted for 200 points on the resale market at AK, so I think this gives us the 11-month window we really wanted in the first place, with enough points to take the 2-3 trips a year we want to.

Looking forward to trying it all out - though the nervousness I have now is around availability!!

Yeah, I get that. As usual, I kind of "rushed in", thought I had all the info, but found I did not. Overall though, they did good job of explaining things and being fair.

Yeah, that's why in the end I kept the PV points.

Actually, no, they did not. It wasn't even brought up as a resort if I think back..

Yeah, this is why I decided to keep the 100 points there and buy 200 more at AK. I have heard good things about PV, just have never stayed there. We'll give it a shot early on with our current points and then decide if that becomes the norm and if we want to buy into more points there in the future.
