Hi, we just bought into AKL this past week. Current special for them was an additional 10 or 20 points based on the number you bought. It also offered a change of the 'use year' I think? Still slightly confused on this.

We bought on September 21st, 2012.

They are changing our use year to April 21st. So we will get our next allotment of points in April of 2013.

Do I need to be concerned about the September 21st date anymore for anything or can I wipe it from my mind?

Also dues, January 1st is the date for the entire year's maitenance payments right?

This confuses me because I don't know why maitenance would not follow your use year dates. Since we bought in September, our maitenance fees are prorated for the rest of the year.

And this may sound really dumb but once our contract is up, am I paying for an entire year's maitenance but the contract expires in April? Maybe we should switch to monthly payments.

Not a lot of money in the grand scheme of things but it is confusing with all the different dates and I still don't know if I need to worry about the September date anymore.

Thanks for any help with sorting out my mind.

wipe both sept 21 and april 21 away.

april 1 is the date to remember. your year no longer starts on jan 1 (to dec 31) but runs from april 1 (to mar 31).

(and remember that UY has no impact on when you can book - just when you can use pts for a stay. you can book your home resort at 11 months out.)

yes.

that's a long time away and you'll probably sell before then. we're not exactly sure how things will go down at the end (your contract actually expires on a january 31 and not in april but that is still short of a full year) but feel free to switch to monthly payments if you prefer.

one other minor point - isn't it nice that you have april 2012 pts but only start paying maintenance fees in sept?

a more important consideration might be whether you typically travel to wdw after april or whether you typically travel to wdw during jan to march? traveling late in your UY (jan to march) can put you in a bad spot if you need to cancel...

Monthly dues begin when you take ownership; in your case September.

Annual dues are adjusted for the calendar year each January. You will get a notice in December of the new annual dues. You have the option of paying for the entire year in January or paying month by month through automatic withdrawal.

Did you know that you can buy resale and save money?

Did you know that you can buy at any resort?

Did you know that your UY should be chosen based on the dates that you will usually vacation?

The September date could be important because you still have time to cancel the purchase if you think that any of the above are important or if you need more time to understand what you are buying.

We purchased in Sept 1997 and got an August UY. We got the 1997 points and then the next group started in Aug 1998. We paid mfs for about 2 1/2 months in 1997 which covered the time we actually had the points. You are doing the same thing. The September date is your purchase date and has no relevance to how or when you can use the points. All reservations will be based on you actual UY. If you do not plan to use the points before April 1 next year you should bank them by the end of November. Welcome Home and hope you have many happy trips.

Use year only really means when you receive your yearly allotment of points and it determines you banking deadline. Very important but for me that was the single most confusing part. With an April UY that means your banking deadline is Nov 30 each year.

I have a Feb UY which means I have to bank unused points by Sept 30. We typically go on a large family vacation in late Sept/early Oct. If for some reason we would have to cancel last minute my booked points would go into a holding account and would have to be used before Jan 31. A very difficult thing to do since DVC is pretty much booked solid from now until then.

Had we been given a choice of UY we might have chosen a different one but travel patterns do change. We just work with it.
