Just back from a fabulous, fabulous trip. Me in an ECV, BF, DD 14, DS 15. A few thoughts/comments:

Rented from Randy"s Mobility. He was great. I arrived much earlier than expected and he accommodated my ealry arrival. Went over the ECV, explained the battery. Off we wnet. No problems all week. It was picked up on time. great. I would definatley use him again.

I avoided the buses becasue of all the horror stories I have read here, so no bus comments. The monorail was great. The CMs were great at every stop. The people, sometimes not so much. I would be at the marked handicapped gate with my family waiting, at the direction of the CM. The train would arrive, the doors open and before the CM could get the ramp in place people would pour into the car. This left my family trying to squeeze into the car behind my ECV. One time my kids could not get into the same car with me becasue there was just no room. And it was never like every other car was so full. I still don't understand why people had to pour into the car I was lined up for.

Rides were very variable in terms of handicapped issues. At BTM we were one of the first few to approach on the morning. The CM in front told me to go to the exit and someone would let us in. They forgot us and we waited quite a bit before anyone came to let us in. On the other hand, Buzz Lightyear, Soarin, the Land and many others were great. We never went directly to the front of the line, which isn't right, but we didn't wait longer than pur turn either. At test Track the CM in front very pointedly ignored me when I was asking which line to go in. So I went in the stand by line with my family. When we got to the front the lift was broken and so they had to take us all the way back outside and all the way around to the exit. The CM inside--whose name I'm sorry I don't remember--could not have been nicer or more apologetic that I was not told out front where to go.

On the rides that don't stop making loading and unloading a challenge I found the CMs very helpful and good about warning me.

Some of the restaurants--be careful. We did a lot of buffets and so I would walk with my cane. But lots of kids running, pushing, etc, made it a bit scary. (I have balance issues and fall easily). ALso watch out as I found many restaurant floors quite slippery, especially Askerhaus (sp?) and CP (although I loved their breakfast!).

if you are doing buffets and have trouble walking make sure to tell the CM as they will try to seat you nearer the buffet line.

In general, sadly, I found more people (other guests) hostile toward me and the ECV than I was prepared for. I know from these boards that a lot of people think ECV users aren't really disabled, especially if you are fat, which I am. But I never could have done WDW w/o the ECV. And I saw tons of people who clearly had never driven an ECV driving like maniacs. It's too bad we all get tarred by that brush. I tried to be careful and look where I was going. I actually received several compliments from boat captains and monorail CMs. I hope that doesn't sound to braggy. And I heard several conversations that led me to believe the people were able bodied and rented for the "ease." Doesn't seem easy to me.

I have to tell you this one story...I'm driving back to my room at the Poly, fairly early one morning. I round a corner, on medium turtle speed, way over on the right hand side of the path. Toward me is coming Grandma on an ECV, her--I would guess--adult daughters and grandchildren, walking. Grandma is bent over adjusting her sandals while holding the ECV controls with her elbows, coming right at me. Swear to God. She's not even glancing up at where she is going. I am over as far as I can go, and now at a dead stop. Grandma is still coming at me. I finally yelled "LOOK OUT!" Grandma looks up and says "Oh. I should look where I'm going." Ya think??!!

Lots of adults not watching their kids who glare at you when their kids leap in front of you. Anyway, just be careful.

Our room at the Poly was plenty big enough to park the ECV out of the way. Battery never ran out, although I napped every afternoon and plugged it in before going out for the evening.

CMs in the shops were all great and very helpful when I couldn't reach things, etc.

I think that's everything I wanted to say. If anyone has a specific question I'll try to answer.

Glad you had a great trip :) We're leaving in 2 weeks for my first ECV trip and I am not looking forward to the busses. Thanks for the buffet line tip as I will also be using my cane in restaurants and hadn't considered slippery floors. So much to think about.

We are leaving next month (WOO HOO!) for the Poly and I was so thrilled to see your review. I have a few questions for you if you don't mind.

1. How was the Poly in terms of being able to get around w/ the ECV?

2. Did you go to any parks that were not on the monorail? If so, how did you get there?

3. Did you use the pool at all?

4. As far as room size, do you think there will be enough room for TWO ECVs? My DH will be needing one as well due to his RA and we are worried there won't be enough space for both. Any suggestions?

Glad to hear you had a great time. My family is starting to get so excited for our trip and I hope we have a good time too. :goodvibes

Thanks!

We are leaving next month (WOO HOO!) for the Poly and I was so thrilled to see your review. I have a few questions for you if you don't mind.

1. How was the Poly in terms of being able to get around w/ the ECV?

Great. I had no trouble except around the pool. People position chairs haphazardly making passage difficult. Then they leave the chairs and there is no one to say excuse me please may I get by. Some of the chairs are heavy and I could not move them. After the first afternoon I stopped trying to maneuver around the pool and parked myself at a table at the beach end where there was more room. One afternoon several people moved a whole line of lounge chairs across the beach path that meanders along the water in front of the buildings. I understand people want to sit together but that was clearly a walking/egress pathway.

2. Did you go to any parks that were not on the monorail? If so, how did you get there?

We had a day at DHS planned but I was having such a great time that I didn't want anything to spoil it--so I was too chicken to take the bus. You can get there by walking through the International Gateway from Epcot 9someone here can likely give you a link to a map) but the World Showcase, and hence the gate, weren't open when we wanted to go. So ,y kids went and my BF and I ended having a lovely morning at Epcot by ourselves, so it worked out. We didn't go to AK and had not planned to go.

3. Did you use the pool at all?
Yup. The first day I walked from a table by the bar holding my BF as my "cane." Didn't like that. Too scary for me. The next time I walked with my cane to the edge of the zero entry end and hung it over the railing at the zero entry end. that was OK but I held onto my BF while walking into the pool becasue I found it a bit slippery. I also tried driving my ECV to the edge and then having my son push it back to our table while I was in and then he brought it back when I got out. I was worried about dripping on it, though.

4. As far as room size, do you think there will be enough room for TWO ECVs? My DH will be needing one as well due to his RA and we are worried there won't be enough space for both. Any suggestions?
My BF and I were just talking aboput this becasue we want to go back and he will need an ECV also. he has stage IV cardiac disease and while he looks perfectly healthy, so much walking in the heat was hard for him. Then I would see him trying to "sneak" a nitro while I wasn't looking and that made me crazed! Sorry to digress...Anyway, we were in the Tahiti building which has slightly bigger rooms. It would take some maneuvering but you could fit
2. I parked mine in front of the 2 chairs and used that plug so the couch and balcony were not blocked. You could fit a 2nd one there but the balcony door might be blocked. You could also fit one in front of hte connecting door if you have one and aren't using it (we were). Don't know about the other buildings.

Glad to hear you had a great time. My family is starting to get so excited for our trip and I hope we have a good time too. :goodvibes

Thanks!

Throwing you some pixie dust for a magical trip!

I'm so glad you had a great time!! :goodvibes It's so disappointing to hear when abled bodied people rent ECVs for the ease. :sad2: It's also scary to hear about that woman in the ECV who was steering with her elbows! :scared: I know my grandmother sometimes would get antsy, and she would lean forward and hit the controls!! :scared: :scared: :scared: I got into the habit of standing behind her so that it's me she's running over - not anyone else  But thankfully, she's now in the habit of turning off her ECV if we're waiting in a line, and if we move up, she'll turn it on and move up. But still, she would always watch out for the safety of others (when she wasn't antsy waiting to get on Splash Mountain! :rotfl: ) and goes EXTRA slow to avoid hitting anyone. And she hasn't hit anyone yet :thumbsup2

On the rides that don't stop making loading and unloading a challenge I found the CMs very helpful and good about warning me.

I have a quick question about this -- what rides didn't stop? I believe the last time she went and was well enough to go on the rides (March trip she caught my cold :guilty: ) the one that didn't stop was SSE, but the CMs slowed it considerably. And she just plain can't do TTA. So it makes me wonder, what other rides don't stop?

Thank you for sharing your story with us :goodvibes

I hope I am remembering correctly and no one elseis home at the moment to confirm but Ibelieve the rides were...Buzz Lightyear (MK), Nemo (EP), Figment maybe? (EP). I think there was someone else but I can't..OH--Haunted Mansion I think did not stop. Also at HM, I elected--for the last time--to stand for the begininng part--BAD IDEA. Some teenage girls were screaming and jumping around and I got puched quite hard. Luckily bwtween my DS and BF they kept me on my feet. After that, though, I stopped doing any walking/standing in line.

That's one of the things I think able bodies people don't always realize. Looking at me sitting in the ECV I only look overweight but otherwise healthy. Aside form that my legs don't work properly anymore which can't be seen unless you see me walk a few steps, my balance is such when standing that getting pushed can cause me to fall. So, if your family member has any issues like that I would suggest not doing even the "short" walk involved for some rides.
