We just returned last night from a magical WDW visit. We had some wonderful meals this trip, with only a couple of minor disappointments. With the exception of one character breakfast, we had breakfast in the room each day. We like simple food that is well-prepared, and we’re not big eaters. When rating a restaurant, the atmosphere and service are as important to us as the food. With that said, here’s a review of where we ate:

Pecos Bill Tall Tale Cafe: We had lunch here on our first park day. Chuck (DH) and I had the chicken wraps with fries, Patrick (DS12) had the cheeseburger with fries and Vince (DS15) had the cheeseburger with carrots. The chicken wraps were okay, but not as good as I had expected. The guys said that the burgers were very good, and the carrots were a nice option. The servings were large, and we could’ve easily split a meal between two of us. Service was fairly quick and efficient, especially considering how busy it was. We’ve always enjoyed the theming in the dining area here, but we were disappointed to find that the tables and floor were dirty this time. Food: B Service: B Atmosphere: D.

Columbia Harbour House: We had dinner here on our first park day. Chuck and Patrick had the Captain’s Special, I had the vegetarian chili, and Vince had the Anchors Aweigh sandwich. We all ended up sharing our meals. Vince didn’t like his sandwich; he had expected plain white tuna instead of tuna salad. I ate half of his sandwich since my veggie chili isn’t very filling now that they’ve stopped serving it in a bread bowl. I enjoyed the chili and I thought the tuna sandwich was excellent. Chuck loved the fish but didn’t care for the chicken so he gave his chicken strips to Vince. Patrick gave Chuck his fish, and Patrick ate the other half of the tuna sandwich. In the end, we all enjoyed our food very much. We ate upstairs, where it was very quiet and a wonderful break from the heat. Unlike Pecos Bill’s, everything here was spotlessly clean and we saw several CM’s going around cleaning tables as soon as guests left. Food: A Service: A Atmosphere: A.

Electric Umbrella: We had lunch here on our second day. We had always passed by this place, thinking it was just a burger joint. Boy, are we glad we decided to give it a try this trip. Chuck and I each had the turkey sandwich with pineapple coleslaw – delicious! The guys had bacon double cheeseburgers, and they both said they were great. The service was quick and efficient, and the seating area was clean and cool. We sat upstairs, which was crowded but not quite as bad as the downstairs seating area. Food: A+ Service: B Atmosphere: B.

Yakitori House: Chuck has a strong interest in Japanese culture, so we decided to try out some Japanese food. Nothing sounded appealing to me here, but I finally decided on the Tokyo sushi roll and I really enjoyed it. Chuck, Vince and Patrick each ordered the teriyaki chicken. Chuck really liked it, but neither of the boys did. Patrick ate the rice but Vince didn’t like that either. They both tried my sushi, but they didn’t like it. The service here was friendly and efficient, and the setting was pleasant and relaxing. If we were more adventurous eaters, this probably would’ve been a very good place to eat. Food: B- Service: B Atmosphere: A.

Sci Fi Dine-In: This is a family favorite, so we have lunch here every trip. We had another great visit this time. We all had burgers, fries and chocolate shakes. Our server was very friendly and attentive. The food was good, but the setting was even better. We love the theming here, and the cheesy movie clips. Food: B Service: B+ Atmosphere: A+.

Boulangerie Patisserie: Chuck and I had lunch here last trip and really enjoyed it, so we decided to stop by here for a light dinner. Vince and I had ham and cheese croissants, while Chuck and Patrick had ham and cheese quiche. For dessert, I had a strawberry tart, Chuck had an apple tart, Patrick had a marvelous (a light chocolate dessert) and Vince had the chocolate mousse. We also had lunch here on another day. On the second visit, they were out of ham and cheese quiche so we all had ham and cheese croissants. For dessert, Vince had a marvelous, Patrick had chocolate cake, and Chuck had chocolate mousse. Everything we had here was fantastic. For both meals, we sat at a table outside the café and enjoyed the wonderful French setting. The servers here were charming and efficient. Food: A Service: B Atmosphere: A.

Earl of Sandwich: I had The Original, Patrick had the Earl’s Club, Vince had The Full Montagu and Chuck had the Chinese chicken salad. The sandwiches were fantastic! Chuck enjoyed his salad, but I think the sandwiches were much better. Vince and I decided to try the Earl’s Grey lemonade – yummy! Service was efficient, and the dining area was pleasant, relaxing and nicely decorated. Food: A Service: B Atmosphere: A.

‘Ohana: This was the one disappointing meal of the trip. It wasn’t bad, but it wasn’t great either. Maybe we were expecting too much, but it just didn’t meet our expectations, especially for the price. Chuck and I both loved the pineapple bread. I liked the wontons and the grilled turkey, Chuck liked the rice, and the guys both liked the grilled turkey. Chuck and I both enjoyed the pineapple and caramel. We let the guys order mousse for dessert since they didn’t eat much dinner and they said it was good. We didn’t care for any of the other food. I didn’t like the grilled shrimp at all even though I usually love shrimp, and the guys are big steak fans but they just nibbled at the steak here. Our servers were efficient and polite, but not especially welcoming. There were no young children in our party, but all the children there seemed to be enjoying the games. Food: C Service: B- Atmosphere: B-.

Casey’s Corner: We had a quick lunch of hot dogs and fries here. The hot dogs were pretty good, although not as good as I had remembered. Chuck got a side of chili to put on his hot dog and it was so runny he couldn’t eat it without making a huge mess. We like the baseball theme here, and the guys sat on the bleachers and watched the cartoon clips for a while after we ate. Food: C Service: B Atmosphere: B.

Aloha Isle: We stopped by here twice this trip for a quick snack. The first time I had a solid pineapple Dole Whip, Chuck had a pineapple-and-vanilla swirled Dole Whip, and the guys had chocolate-and-vanilla swirled ice cream. The second time, Chuck and I each had the pineapple-and-vanilla swirled Dole Whip, Vince had chocolate ice cream and Patrick had chocolate-and-vanilla swirled. Yum – we love Dole Whips! The solid pineapple is still my favorite. Food: A+ Service: B Atmosphere: N/A.

Hollywood & Vine: We ate here for the Fantasmic Dinner Package. We were pleasantly surprised by how much we enjoyed the food, and there is a good variety to choose from. We especially enjoyed the desserts, with the mascarpone snicker cheesecakes being our favorites. We always enjoyed the character breakfast at this restaurant, and while we still miss the character breakfast we were pleased to find that the setting is also great for dinner. Our server was very friendly and attentive. Food: A Service: A+ Atmosphere: A.

Pepper Market: We had a late lunch here after spending the morning at Typhoon Lagoon. We had trouble finding something that appealed to us, and we thought the layout was very confusing. I finally settled on a Caesar salad, Chuck had a chicken sandwich, Vince had a burger, and Patrick had chicken strips from the kids’ menu. We thought the prices were much too high here, even by WDW standards. The food was okay, but not worth going back for. Food: C Service: B- Atmosphere: C.

Rainforest Café: This is another family favorite, mostly for the theming. Our server this time was excellent, and the food was very good. Chuck and Vince had Rainforest Burgers, Patrick had the Passport to Paradise (a four-cheese pizza), and I had the plant sandwich. Patrick said it was the best pizza he had ever had, and the rest of us all enjoyed our sandwiches very much. I had made ressies about 3 weeks before our trip, and I’m really glad I did because we were seated immediately while the wait with no ressie was 2 hours! Food: A Service: A+ Atmosphere: A+.

Donald’s Breakfastosaurus: Another family favorite. Patrick is a huge Donald fan, and we all enjoy meeting the characters. This is a standard breakfast buffet, and every time we’ve visited the food has been hot and plentiful. Our server was attentive and a lot of fun. We like the casual camp theming. My only complaint is that the restaurant seemed especially loud this visit. Food: B Service: A Atmosphere: B.

San Angel Inn: We had planned to have counter service for dinner this evening, but we were all really tired so I checked to see if we could get into a table service restaurant. Our first try was Teppanyaki, but there was a long wait there for a table so we decided to check at San Angel Inn. A table was available about 15 minutes after we checked in. We ate here as part of the Candlelight Processional package in 2002 and did not really enjoy the meal, but we decided to give it a second chance. There wasn’t much on the menu that appealed to any of us, especially the guys. Vince ended up ordering a burger off the children’s menu. The food was okay, but not great. The service was probably the worst of our trip, although it wasn’t really bad. I felt rushed throughout the meal. The theming is beautiful, but there is still something about this restaurant that feels uninviting to me and spoils the setting. It’s really too bad, because we love everything else in the Mexican pavilion and feel that everything else here is warm and welcoming. Food: C Service: D Atmosphere: C.

Kona Café: We had lunch here on our last day while waiting to leave for the airport. Our last meal at WDW turned out to be our favorite! Chuck and I had the Island Chicken Sandwich, Vince had the Big Kahuna Burger, and Patrick had a burger from the children’s menu. For dessert, Chuck and I each had the Chocolate Macadamia Nut Tart, Vince had the KoKo Puffs, and Patrick had the Kilauea Torte. Chuck and I had Kona coffee with our dessert. Everything was absolutely delicious. We stuffed ourselves silly, but we didn’t let a bite go to waste! Jackie was our server, and she was the best server we had all week. We also really liked the setting here; it’s relaxed and inviting, with just enough theming to make it interesting but not overpowering. For us, it was a perfect meal, and a great way to cap off a magical vacation. Food: A+ Service: A+ Atmosphere: A+.

If anyone has any questions about any of the places we ate, I'd be happy to answer them.

Kaycee,

Did you go to the Rainforest Cafe at Downtown Disney or at the Animal Kingdom, and which number did you call for a PS? I wasn't sure if they have a number of their own or if you use the regular WDW number. Sounds like you all enjoyed some good meals, and Vince had my very favorite dessert -- the KoKo Puffs at the Kona Cafe. They, alone, are worth the trip. Of course, now they're a thing of the past, for me, because unfortunately, they're NOT low carb.

Pat

120 days and counting . . . again!

Thank you for the detailed reviews. I can't wait to try Earl of Sandwhich!

I agree 100% with you about San Angel Inn, We were so excited to eat there, the atmosphere seemed wonderful. I really think it is because they stuff so many people into that one little space. I ended up trading places with my husband because everytime a waiter or waitress walked by our table we were bumped hard enough to shake the glasses on the table. Hard to enjoy a meal when you are worried about something being dumped on your head :)

We ate at the Rainforest Cafe at Downtown Disney. The number I called for a reservation is 1-407-827-8500. This was an actual reservation as opposed to a PS. For this location, you can call any time within a month of your visit. I called about 3 weeks out and was told I could pick any time I wanted for dinner. I don't think a lot of people call ahead to make ressies for here.

For the Rainforest Cafe at AK, just call the regular number for making WDW PS's, 1-407-939-3463. For this location, you will receive a PS just like PS's at other WDW locations and the PS can be made 90 days out.

I just love the Plant Sandwich at Rainforest! Thanks for sharing some great reviews! I'm looking forward to trying the Earl of Sandwich on our cirque night, it has gotten rave reviews on these boards. We also enjoy sci-fi....love the burgers and shakes.

Curious....what are KoKo Puffs?

Great reviews, Kaycee! I've yet to eat at Sci Fi or Kona Cafe. Had a PS for Sci Fi last trip and the girls voted to stay and swim at SAB and not to go to MGM. Sorry you didn't enjoy Ohana, it's one of my favorites!

I asked Vince how he would describe the KoKo Puffs, and he said, "they're great!" I asked what was in it, and he said, "I don't know, I just know it tasted great!" So I'm afraid I can't give you a very accurate description, I can just tell you what it looked like. The outside was several little domes of what looked like puff pastry with whipped cream on each dome. Inside was a chocolate cream filling. I didn't really see anything else. All I know is that Vince is an extremely picky eater, and a chocolate fanatic, and he practically inhaled the KoKo Puffs! :D

Oh no!! Another dessert to add to the list........:faint:

Thanks Kaycee for the detailed restaurant reviews. They are very much appreciated. We, too, love Kona Cafe. Funny how service can make or break a dining experience. Can't wait for our next trip!:D
