just back w/new camera pick on me allowed :)

i have the same camera and have found that a lot of the time i take pictures they come out yellow-orangeish. yours look fantastic. i love that lily shot!

nighttime shots for me with that camera are the worst for some reason. i get better pictures with my p&s (samsung).
Kevin mentioned using RAW, you can also manually set the white balance with JPG mode (and with RAW). When you're indoors and getting yellowy photos. Press the Fn button and arrow to WB (white balance, I think it's to the left) and select Tungsten. Remember the set it back to Auto when you're outside again. This can also affect night photos. So, you can do it without shooting RAW.

The advantage of RAW is that you can ignore white balance when actually shooting, and fix it later in post-processing with no penalties. Here's a shot of the Contemporary from the beach at the Polynesian - I'm pretty sure that this is the white balance as it came from the camera.

Now, here's the same photo with white balance adjusted (along with a few other tweaks, mainly some fill light added in Lightroom):

I think this is a good example of why it's nice to shoot RAW as you can go back, even months later, and tweak your photos when you're more confident in your post-processing skills - of course, the problem is that they're never done post-processing, I keep learning new things and the temptation is there to go back and redo everything all over again. :)

Here's another example. Original white balance:

thanks for the tips guys! i look at my photos and think they look horrible (especially the indoor and night time shots for sure!). how many shots do you get on a 2 gb card with raw setting? maybe that's just what i'll have to use from now on...

just looked at my camera and you get 186 out of a 2g on the k100d

Wow beautiful photos! The waterlily was just amazing. :thumbsup2

WOW thats not very much. I get 270 on an empty 2GB card, though in reality I get around 330. My Nikon D50 is also 6.1MP, so I did a bit of looking and apparently the K100D has Large RAW files (10 MB; not losslessly compressed), which dpreview lists as a con. wow thems sum huge files. If it says 186 before taking any pics, then you can probably get closer to 220 depending on the subject.

A negative, perhaps, but on the other hand, I just picked up a 4gb SDHC card for $20 after rebate, so I don't see it as that big of a deal. :) I think the RAW format in use by the K100D is basically an uncompressed TIFF plus the camera's data attached. The K10D does use a compressed format, as well as the option of DNG (something the big boys still haven't tried, I don't think). I'm not sure if the K100D Super does compressed RAWs, but I kind of doubt it.

Since they're uncompressed, you get the same number of photos no matter if they're full of detail or just shots of the inside of your lens cap. So, yes, you'll consistently get less shots per card than the D50. To be fair, though, the D50's compressed RAW mode does lose some information compared to uncompressed - it's not 100% lossless.

I dont know if you have the k100d or the super but the sdhc from lexmark that i bought to use in the k100d does not work because the original does not support the hd format the super however does.:confused3 but its not a loss i can still use it in my S3 which i am hoping to convert to IR

Check Pentax's site for a firmware upgrade. Even my old *ist DL works with SDHC cards with an updated firmware, and the K100D certainly does also. It's easy and painless to update, just put the file onto a memory card and IIRC hold down a button when turning the camera on.

edit: Here is a direct link to the page with the K100D firmware upgrades.
