We just returned from our first trip to WDW; it was wonderful! I thought I would share some info in the hopes that it will help someone else with their planning.

I wanted to stay close to $2,500 for hotel/food/park tickets. I will leave airfare, cocktails, and souvenirs out of this equation. We are a party of 5; myself, DH, sons 8 and 6, and DD 2. We were at WDW from 1/25-2/1 (7 nights, 8 days in the parks). We are already AAA members, so they gave me quotes. I think that the Disney special offered at the time was about the same discount as AAA. The Annual Pass discounts during our dates were $96 off a deluxe, or $66 off a moderate per night. So, do I get a disney package with the dining plan, or buy an AP and the DDE card and pay for dining?

We decided to go the AP/DDE route, and I kept track of my expenses so I would have a feel for what we spent for the future.
We ate 7 CS and 7 TS meals. We generally ate breakfast in the room quickly before we left for the day. We had snacks occasionally.

Our CS meals: Flame Tree BBQ, Studio Catering, Columbia HH, Pecos Bill, Tusker House, Roaring Forks, Cosmic Ray
Our TS meals: Boma (dinner), Le Cellier (lunch), California Grill (adults dinner), Kona Cafe (breakfast), Cinderella's Table (dinner), Whispering Canyon (breakfast), and Chef's of France (lunch).
Total spent: $655.

When I look back, I think we made the right choice. We did a split stay at AKL and WL for $109 per night for 7 nights. I bought 1 AP and 3-8 day hoppers from ticketmania. Including the cost of the DDE card, our total was $2,569.
If we had gone the route of the dining plan, we would have stayed at POFQ, and our total was $2,419.
All along we had wanted to stay at AKL and WL, and we did it for only $150. more. Plus, if we plan our trip next year for a week earlier, we can use my AP again, and the DDE card will still be good.
I felt like we ate everything we needed to. We ordered what we wanted, and didn't have food left over. We really liked having TS breakfasts and lunches. The problem with TS dinners during January was that the parks closed early, so you had to eat really early, or else you had to skip anything in the evening like Spectromagic (eating late doesn't work for our kids).

This is not meant to bash the dining plan; in fact it showed me what a good deal it really is. Now, if the dining plan were offered with an AP discount, that would be a real deal!

I hope this makes sense, and is useful to someone!

Just want to clarify that the $2569 you spent included the $655 on meals right? I'm guessing the 2 year old was free everywhere! Your family size (not counting the free 2 yr old) is the same as ours for the moment when it comes to paying for WDW (I have 2 kids 4 and 8 yrs old).

I think you can get a bit more food to eat on the dining plan because of the snacks, appetizers and desserts but whether or not you really want to EAT all that food is another thing!

I did something similar to what you did last summer - bought 1 AP and the rest hopper and also the DDE cards....I got a good deal on an AP rate at the CR. We're considering another trip in April before my AP expires and I'm trying to cost it all out - just wish I could get a rate like $109/night at AKL - cheapest I can find is a water view at more like $220 (with tax). She told me the standard view, which is sold out, is only $10 cheaper. I'll have to look into that - thanks for the report!

Yes, the both totals were for hotel/food/tickets. Our 2 year old generally ate off of our plates. Ordering 3 kids meals would have been too much food for our 3 kids. It was interesting to me when I added it up after our trip: we spent $655 on food, the dining plan for the 4+1 free would have been $686. You are right, we could have ordered more food, but we couldn't have eaten any more. I also didn't plan the 7 CS/7 TS split, it just worked out that way, just like the dining plan.

Yay! Thanks so much for posting this mrsmagic. We did the same thing last summer - AP + DDE. This year we're renting points from a DVC member for most of our trip so we could get the dining plan if we want but I'm not sure it's good value for us as I will still have a valid DDE card. Also we'll have the kitchenette to save some more money (not that we want to 'cook' every day). I'm leaning towards DDE card with no DP. It's nice to get feedback on going that route though. Thanks. :)

I really enjoyed reading your post & your breakdown of AP vs. DP.

I did exactly the same thing as you last year. Bought an AP & DDE for myself & 10day premium tickets for my DH, DS12, DD9 & DS8. It worked out better for us to get the $70 off room rate & 20% DDE and I knew we would be returning within the year so our tickets are covered this time. But...I would still like to try the dining plan & have that "everything is paid for" frame of mind before we leave. Here's hoping Disney include AP guests for the dining plan in the future.

Thanks for the info MrsMagic. I'm going to rethink our package.
Deb I just wanted to say what a cute baby :goodvibes

hey mrsmagic - thank you so much for posting this! i was having this very debate for 2 trips i am taking this year. i live in new england so i've never owned an AP but i figured with 2 trips this year it'd be worth it. and then i was debating on dining plan or disney dining experience and you've really answered my question there. so THANKS!!!! :thumbsup2

Another thank you for posting this message as we are currently struggling with the DP or DDE for our upcoming trip in June. Our eating pattern would probably turn out as yours did...we could most likely get in the necessary number of TS, CS and snacks, but we don't think we want to be tied to it for a variety of reasons. Thanks again!
