Just back , some reviews and thoughts from a DDP Newbie

I am not a huge fan of buffets either. I did enjoy the buffet at Boma, but it was a bit more upscale and people were staffed here and there along the buffet which I think made some that normally would not behave, at least think about whose food they were touching.

Funny you should say that.... I was there last year, and a kid at the dessert buffet getting her own food, dropped her plate full.... on me! Strawberries on my new sneakers:eek:.... she had a meltdown. then the mom appeared, (so she must have been at the next station filling her own plate, not tending the child). They didn't even look to see where the food went (divided between me and the floor)! The guy behind the dessert station handed me some napkins, so I wiped the creamy stuff and worse of the mess of my leg and sneaks, and back at the table got a wet cloth from the server to do damage control on the sneaker (bless her heart, she was going to try to clean up my sneaker... I really would not expect her to do that!). Just a little red stain remains.
But you can bet I was more watchful of the others near me at buffets for the rest of the trip! Just glad it wasn't something bad smelling like fish sauce!

looking forward to hearing about 'Ohana!:)

I called for three weeks continuous to get this ADR. I thought this meal fit our family best of all the the places I read about. I was afraid because of all the hype and the poor review I had read about it being 'over hyped' plus our let down of two very popular and usually positive reviewed places that this was going to be yet another let down. We have learned that we do not like buffets, and , in the future will not book them again as they were just not our cup of tea. I almost canceled this and tried to go back to Chef's .. but I am glad in the end I didn't.

We arrived for a 5:00 adr at 4:45 and were given a pager and asked to wait in the lobby. I looked lovingly over at Kona.. another wonderful meal we had that week and wished I was there.. but as soon as my mind wandered.. we were beeped into our table.. We had a lovely table right near the windows , it was nice to have the pretty garden/water view. Immediatly we were greated and for once.. the only question we were asked was , Are you using the dining plan? .. No Tip not included speech.. and we were asked if we'd like some time to figure out our drinks.. yeah.. finally .. I ordered a Mai Tai which was different from the Kona one..but just as good. The kids ordered smoothies, and DH ordered a beer.

Our server was very prompt with our drinks and very friendly. She explained how everything was going to work and encouraged the kids to participate in the activities. We had our Salad about the same time as our drinks. This was a nice large bowl of fresh greens in a very light citrus tasting dressing. It was refreshing and a very good start. The Chef came over to go over the menu for nuts again and told us that she needed to stay away from the bread and desert just in case. He provided her again, with a loaf of safe bread and a LARGE fruit plate and vanilla ice cream for desert - Same Chef as Kona.. I took this time to thank him for the lovely meal we had at Kona and told him that it was one of our favorite meals of the week.. a Solid thumbs up from all of he. He was very pleased we were happy.

Our bread arrived and I was hoping for the same lovely stuff as over at Kona.. but nope, However, the Welcome bread was very good , lots of flavor and seemed to be very fresh.. everyone enjoyed it.

A few moments later we were served Potstickers and Wings. We all started with one of each. Honestly, I did not care for the wings. I prefer my wings crispy, these were quite soggy , however the sauce was delightful and had they been crispy wings I would have inhaled them. I just don't do the soggy style wings. The dumplings/potstickers were very good. They had a nice flavor and we finished a whole bowl .. easy..

We are not huge eaters.. so this was a lot of food already.. The meat started coming around about the time we finished.. First the Shrimp.. These were perfectly cooked and seasoned.. though messy to eat (they leave hot towels on the table to fix this) I enjoyed these very much. We started with 4-5 shrimp each. Basically they emptied a skewer at our table. I sort of wish they came a bit slower with the next few meats because it was hard to keep up .. Next they came with the Pork and Turkey.. The pork was lovely.. so tender. The turkey was also very well cooked, and went amazingly well with the peanut sauce.. I had never had peanut sauce on turkey before but took the recomendation of our server and tried it.. yummmm.. while we were nibbling they brought out noodles and broccoli. I was getting full and this was going on overkill -- too much food. I can't beleive people complain about not getting enough food here.. :confused3 .. I liked the broccoli alot. It was cooked tender crisp and perfect. I prefer mine a little more cooked but this was just fine and went well with the meal. The noodles on the other hand I did not care for. The were oddly sweeet and kind of cold. I did not like them being sweet - as I prefer more Lo Mein (chinese) style. The kids liked them ok.. but I think a bowl of baked potatoes would have gone great with this meal...

(OK.. I have to come back and finish since I have to put the kids to bed)

This is one that i am thinking of scheduling at Thanksgiving for our group of 8 (5 of which are teen boys and one man who eat ALOT) in lieu of a buffet. Glad it was on your list as I enjoy your reviews. :thumbsup2

So I left off with the noodles. I think rice, regular Lo Mein noodles, Roasted Potatoes or even baked potatoes would have been a better side item. These were too sweet and we already had 'Sweet' with the wings and the dipping sauces. This is a personal preference.. we were enjoying everything else so the noodles weren't that important - there was enough food .

The steak finally made it's way around to us. I found it to be a bit dry and over cooked.. I told my husband this and he agreed.. but no sooner than we made that statement (which was overheard apparently) a fresh , medium/rare skewer made it's way to our table :wizard: .. our server also magically appeared with new plates :wizard: .. this second go at the meat was very well received by all. I guess the rule is , don't be afraid to ask for your meat more rare or more well done.. it is possible, even , when you don't expect it.

I was stuffed by now, but , really wanted to try this well reviewed masterpiece of a desert!! DH was not.. so when the skewer dude (what my kids called him.. LOL) came by and asked me if I wanted more.. I said no thank you and he ran off.. what the problem was, both DS and DH wanted more .. he had the turkey and pork which is what they wanted.. it took 10 more minutes for the skewer dude to come back and he only had steak.. but that was ok too.. but still, first skewer dude should have asked EVERYONE first. Our server was very attentive - so we never wanted for anything..

Finally we all gave up on the main dishes and readied ourselves for desert.. DD 12 (nut allergy) was presented with a very large platter of fresh fruit.. it was amazing .. along with a dish of dipping yogurt.

The rest of us were presented with a large platter of bread pudding, a cup of banana's foster and a bowl of vanilla ice cream. Two extra bowls of ice cream were also brought incase the kids didn't like the bread pudding. DD 12 was also served ice cream.

DH took one bite of the bread pudding and went yuck.. Oh My.. I was so dissapointed.. how could that be.. :confused3 .. I told him to put the ice cream and the banana's on it and try again and :cheer2: that made ALL the difference.. he liked it alot - was it his favorite???.. no.. would he order it over other things he had this week ??.. no, but he really liked it. My response is going to be the same. I liked it alot, but, not enough to go out of my way to get it. It is a perfect ending to this meal though.

We also ordered some coffee which was very nice.. and even had time for a second cup. We never felt pushed or rushed in this meal. Actually, we were encouraged to indulge more.. I really liked the 'vibe' here..

Overall.. we liked this alot, ranked it third on our list for the week.. after Chef's and Kona .. The kids like the 'serving' style, and I enjoyed the pace of new fresh food being presented. Nothing was OMG good .. but a nice overall meal in a nice setting.

The lounge act was cheesy but fit the place perfectly. The kids had fun with it and it enhanced the ambience rather than took away from it. It made it more family friendly. Depending on where you are seated this could be more or less annoying while you are trying to eat or if you are just some adults trying to have some dinner conversation.

So.. I give it an all around 8 -- you get more food quality food here than a buffet for the same price. The options, though, limited are sure to please most people - especially your meat eaters. Nothing stood out as overly memorable in terms of food, though the total experience was memorable, it is a place we would return to without hesitation. Though I would make a later ADR as it was too close to lunch for all that food. I think 6:30ish would be a fine time to eat here. Getting here from Magic Kingdom or Epcot was a breeze and a nice reprieve from the parks via tram.

So that was our last offical ADR.. we still have one more day (an add on day) but we had 9 CS meals left over and 9 snacks.. even though they should have been gone.. my kids just could not eat that much.. so we planned on using them up on the last day .. We ate at Disney Studios for lunch that day (not memorable at all) and at Cosmic Ray's for dinner - I will review both when finished.. we also used our last CS meals up at the Main Street Bakery .. where you can choose THREE items and drink .. on our way out of the park at 9 , we used our last two CS meals and got 6 items.. two chocolate muffins, two coffee Cakes, one Coissant and one large cookie and two bottles of water. These were our on the road snacks for our 9 hour drive home.. I will also review these and the other snacks and lunches we had throughout our week next..

Some of those places will be..

Pizza Planet , Dis Studios
Yak and Yetis Counter Service AK
Cosmic Rays
Colombia Harbor House
Sunshine Seasons
Tangerine Cafe
(the place at the Mexico Pavillion for CS .. name escapes me)
China counter service
Beach Club Market place
Main Street Bakery
France Crepe's cart
Margarita Stand Mexico

Various Snacks..

Waffle Cones (France)
Slushies
Crepes France
French Fries (Dis Studios)
Beach Club market place muffins, yogurt parfaits..
Milk Shakes
Egg Rolls
and more...

Our family ranked in almost total agreement our meals this way.. one exception is that DS and DD liked Kona the same as Chef's

Chef's De France , oustanding all around.. best Filet/meal I have had in years.

Kona Cafe' , top notch food , great service, good value also a GREAT meal!

Ohana , good fun, good food, great service, good value, a lot of food.

Yak and Yeti , good/ok food, nice setting, ok service, decent prices for Disney.

Akershus, basic breakfast food cooked well, not a great value though for breakfast overall.. but a nice way to enjoy a family style meal.

1900 Park Fair, buffet food, fairs better than other buffets but just ok.

Crystal Palace, total let down in all aspects, would not do again.. ever.
