Just back , some reviews and thoughts from a DDP Newbie

Kirlinle, you and I must be twins! So far I've eaten at all the places you listed and I have the same feelings about them. I love Kona Cafe and Chefs de France. Coral Reef and Yak & Yeti I can pass on.

Great reviews! Thanks for taking the time to do them!

We really enjoyed Le Chefs, but were not going to do it again (it is very noisy & Dad doesn't hear well--though he said don't worry about it, he doesn't hear well anywhere!)
BUT DS14 has been BEGGING to go bac--he LOVED that mac & cheese!

Love the reviews so far! In June, we'll be eating at a lot of the same restaurants, so the reviews are very helpful. I'm glad you like Coral Reef b/c I've read some pretty bad reviews about it. However, we've never done it so we thought it's time to at least try it! We also love Kona Cafe and Chefs of France- so glad you enjoyed them!

Your reviews are great! The french menu sounds yummy! i can't wait until our trip in june :goodvibes

I think pretty much all the places we ate were more noisy then a normal resteraunt, but, it's funny, I found Chef's to be the most quiet of them all.. but maybe it was because I was in another world with my yummy food and didn't notice.. :lmao::rotfl2::worship:

I'm enjoying your reviews. I have not eaten at any of these places and even without pictures feel like I have a great "picture" of them.

Great reviews! We absolutely love Kona! Looking forward to the rest!

I think I read the review board for weeks while tweaking my ADR's. I am one of these people that has to try something once. I have learned also that a bad server can make a good meal into a bad experience , or a good server and good ambiance make so so food better. So I am trying to find a way to describe the whole experience.

I was taken back when I first walked up to Kona Cafe. It wasn't what I expected it to LOOK like . It first reminded me of the entry to the food court at a mall because it was 'Open' to the lobby, then , when seated at our table, I found that was part of the 'charm' of the place because you just would not expect a meal that good from a place like this and maybe because I was seated on the far side, with my back to the open lobby, I never really felt like I was in an open area. I also liked that there was 'buzz' all around, with the tables close the buzz made you feel like you could Talk without anyone really paying attention to you.. or if your kids were a bit louder no one would really notice.

My favorite part was the 'tour' of the desert bar .. gave me something to look forward to all meal.

OK.. I am going to try to get my review done for Akershus before bed!!!

This breakfast was all about our princess obsessed DD7. She was so excited leaving the hotel. We had a 9:20 ADR and arrived at 9:10 and was called in at 9:30.. so not too bad.

We got in the queue for the photo with Belle. DD7 being disabled she takes a bit longer than other kids to do these things and to get a good picture. The photographer and Belle were excellent in this regard and we got a great picture, the people in line however, not so much :o(. This took away from the magic a little bit for us.. but sadly we are used to it.

We were then ushered to our seats and met our server. He was very friendly and attentive, he took our drink orders and pointed out the buffet, by they time we had returned to our seats our drinks were waiting for us.

The buffet was a nice starter, there was fresh fruit, fish, pastries, biscuits, Donuts and Rolls. The kids enjoyed the Chocolate Coissants and Donuts. My husband really liked the salmon, I had a some fruit and a biscuit , both were very fresh. I tried the Salmon and it was very very fishy tasting and smelled strong. My husbands did not, we had gotten the fish from different ends of the buffet and one was notably better than the other..

We nibbled for a few minutes and the waiter came by and told me he was going to hold our hot food a moment because Sleeping Beauty was going to make her way there and didn't want DD to mess up her pretty shirt yet :thumbsup2... We were seated by the door where the enter the dining room. So probably like the 5 or 6 table to get them to come by. Once we had our pictures, Ariel came by. Our meal was served then. There was a nice platter of Scrambled Eggs, Bacon, Sausage and Potato Casserole. All were very nicely cooked. The eggs were not runny or too hard, the bacon crisp, the sausage was very hot and my favorite of the whole meal, the Potatos were excellent. A few moments later we were visted by Cinderella and Mulan. I think we got time to sign the book, take a few photos and a few words and off they went. Not a lot of interaction, but , pretty standard for this type of meal.

Our server brought another platter out as we had finished some of the items on our plate, on that was replacements for the 'missing' items.. Bacon and Potatoes. Our coffee and drinks were always topped off and our table tended to nicely.

We were presented with our photo package (included) and it was a great picture. The package included a lot of prints and that was a nice inclusion.

OK so that what was good..

Our bill.. before DDP was around 160+ dollars and that is including our tip. So here are my not so good thoughts.

The meal was good, but I personally found better princess interacation and photo ops throughout World Showcase.. for example, Beauty and Beast were in France, Snow White Germany, Sleeping Beauty also in France. None of the lines here get long in the morning and DD7 had a blast playing and interacting with them. Our total time at the place was 1 1/2 hours for breakfast, which , 10 of that was princess time if you don't count the time we spent with Belle , which was about 4-5 minutes tops. The food was good, but, it is just normal ordinary breakfast food, nothing really fancy. If you get seated where we were, you get the princesses first, but you also loose the magic when they leave the area because you can't continue to see them milling around.. which , for younger kids can be important.

I don't think I would do this again, I don't find a Value in it. I think I would have liked to snack/breakfast at the hotel and then snack around the WS while visiting the Princesses and trying different things - it would have cost less and you get more.

We had done the Akershus dinner on our 2007 trip and it was awful, we had a horrid server, cold food - nothing good to say about it. This time we heard great things about the breakfast I felt we should give it one more try, I am glad we did but we won't be back.

Service - 10, Our server was excellent
Food - 7 , it was basic breakfast food but cooked well , I give the potatos a 9 though
Ambiance - 6 It is a pretty place, but noisy, and depending on where you sit the Characters go out of sight quicky loosing some of the magic.
Value - 3 , I guess paying this much for breakfast isn't my cup of tea for the little interaction you get and the types of food.

I think any little princess obsessed child, especially the younger ones who tend to be up early and don't/can't wait in character lines well , I would say this would be a good choice to try once. Otherwise, save your money and use it for a nice sitdown meal later and visit the princesses in the parks...

I also wanted to add at 1900 Park Fair they charged 30.00 (give or take a dollar) for the same photo package . So you can keep this in mind when you are pondering the value. I would not ordinarly have bought a picture package. I have no need for 10 photos, I would however, pay for one or two really nice 5 x 7's and wish they could do that in more places. However, the package was very nice, good quality prints and presented in a nice folder.

I'm getting hungry!
Wow, your descriptions of the food are as good as a picture!

I was at LeCellier last Sep on DDP, also paid OOP for apps & drinks (I was going to type P OOP, but that has to be wrong! :confused3)

Wow! except for a brusque young lady at reception ("I have your name, go sit down"), it was great! Food, environment, servers.
It did take me back to France (and to Switzerland!).
Definitely worth a repeat visit (after I do all the other restaurants).

Good work! Keep it coming!:cheer2:

So far our dining adventures at Disney have been good. Even when the meal didn't wow us , we all walked away feeling 'good' about. Whether it be the service or a new side dish (beans at Yak and Yeti or Potatos at Akershus) we all really felt like the dining plan was working for us by allowing us to try new things or places we would not pick OOP -- that was until Crystal Palace :confused3 .. Now I know people are very passionate about this place , so , I am treading on this review carefully and keeping a very open mind that we could have been there at an off time and Spring Break, but , I feel I have to tell it like it is..

I am a HUGE Pooh Fan.. My first daughters room was Pooh and my youngest DD inherited the items in her room. I have framed Lithographs in hallway of Pooh.. so yes, I Like my Pooh Bear. Having never been I was excited for this experience.. so it pains me that it went so wrong.

We arrived for our 7:55 ADR at 7:30, we were told that seating will take about 15 minutes past what our ADR is as they were running behind.. OK.. I left DH there with my two DD's and took DS to look at the shops over by Casey's .. My DD frantically came running over 5 minutes later screaming we can't have our table if you don't come now and we were told that we would miss our ADR time too if we don't take that table :confused3:confused3 , OK , so I got back (like in 2 minutes) ... I was treated very rudely by the host for wandering off and told that our Party must stay together.. OK. I apologise and follow behind. We were seated to the right of entry at a round table right by the walkway to the buffet, so we were close to the buffet. I pull out my chair and something is sticky on it, and there are dirty untensils under the table. It takes 2 minutes for our server to come over and take our drink orders but 15 minutes to bring them out.. she said because she didn't want us to go to the Buffet because we'd miss Piglet and Tigger so she waited on our drinks, she said they were busy and wanted to make sure everyone saw the characters right away to free up tables when we were done :confused3.. OK.. I mention the yucky seat and untensils under the table..which she cleaned up.

OK so we get a few moments with Tigger and Piglet and head to the Buffet.. It has been ransacked by kids.. The man in front of me kept using the spoons then licking his fingers and grabbing the next one. I got very grossed out. The kids were all grabbing items with hands (like the peel and eat shrimp) and the desert buffet looked like a bomb went off on it.. a chocolate cake bomb.. So far I was quite grossed out. So I finally decide to choose a few items.. Salad, the salad I must say was quite good, chilled correctly and nicely prepared. I did get some peel and eat shrimp after I told them to replace what was there :scared: due to the kids, it was just Ok. I got some carved beef - full of fat, very dry. I got some carved Turkey.. this was better but was just OK at best. I dabbled at some other items which just did not do anything at all for me. I just was not impressed and I am not picky.. we eat at Golden Corral because the kids like it.. and I liken this to a very expensive Golden Corral , and, in some cases even lower quality.

I did like the Salad, Mashed Potatoes and Chicken Fingers .. but I could get that at KFC for 2.99 and it would probably taste the same.

The kids were not overly impressed either, but, they are easily amused by a self serve ice cream machine :rotfl2: so they found a highlight. My son did like the turkey, Chicken Fingers and he tried the mussels which he said were very very gritty.

I asked DH.. he said it was overpriced buffet food in a pretty building with Poor Bear... OK.. he was not happy either.. He ate very little and said he was grossed out by the people too.. there were just so many.

So finally Pooh Bear and Eeyore make it over. They were rushed but we got some cute photos. We had seen Pooh and Tigger earlier in the park and got some good pictures.. so even though he is my favorite this did not make me like being here any better.

I couldn't even drown my dissapointment in a glass of wine because MK is Alcohol free. I do like to have a drink dinner when on vacation, while this isn't a deal breaker for my choice of restraunt, it is something that I didn't think of.

So I decide to make an attempt at the desert bar. One side was really torn apart so I went around to the side near where the bathrooms are. I found a fresh , untouched apple cobbler. I scooped a nice large amount out on a plate , poured some vanilla ice cream on it and found something that I was actually enjoying. I ordered a cup of coffee (ewwwww.. ) to go with it but it tasted like plain water with milk in it.. so I just ate the dessert.

I walked out feeling very let down. I will say that our server did a good job after cleaning up our table. She was very attentive, bussed our table, and brought out drinks and refills consistantly after that first 'issue' of the not getting out drinks because Tigger was coming..

We seemed , just like Akershus, removed from the 'activites' by our seating location. This makes it feel again that you are removed from the action.

So, No, we would not do this again. While I do eat at buffets , I just don't enjoy them very much. I like a nice relaxed sit down meal. I also think that the finger licking etc. that I saw really turned me off that night too ..

I think the place is very pretty though and I think it might actually be a great place to start your day in the park.. but I do not recommend it based on our experience. Though so many people do love it.. It was our worst meal of the week.

The Character Interaction was good, but short and limited.

So here you go...

Service = 5 I didn't like waiting for drinks, that should be our choice , didn't like being told they needed the table so we had to get our characters in, and I did not like the attitude upon arrival.

Food = 4 most of the food was bland, typical buffet food with a few noted exceptions

Ambience = 5 , pretty building, but that's about it.

Value = for me I can rate it, I didn't find value in it. However for a big eater or one who likes the food will find value in it.. so it is hard. For me , I'd give it a 1.

So sorry Crystal Palace Fans. I really wanted to love this place.. :grouphug:

So , we were supposed to have a breakfast at Cape May this morning, but , we cancelled it. The whole buffet thing just got me down. I was paying OOP for Cape May so no biggie. We decided to have a quick light breakfast and a nice lunch at Epcot. I think we ate at the Tangerine Cafe' which I will review later.

OK.. Of all the dinners , this is THE ONE, I kept reading about and wanted so badly to take DD7 too.. She loves all things Cinderella and of course Prince Charming.. I spent every waking hour calling for a cancellation as up to a few weeks before our trip - we had an ADR for Wispering Canyon.. now, in some ways I wish we went there.. I finally got a 6:30 ADR after weeks of calling and was thrilled that my little girl was going to see her Prince - she was so excited on the ride over..

We arrive to a ZOO of a waiting area. This place has one lousy Check In desk when they are busy. We were sent off with a Pager after Checking in at 6:15 - DS and I thought the Grand Floridian was pretty and decided to wander around outside (no I didn't learn my lesson yesterday.. ).. We didn't go out of visual range of DH though.. The GF is very pretty and we enjoyed listening to the band and piano players while we waited. The shops here are nice too.

OK.. so we get paged.. it is now 6:45 .. woo hoo.. only to get into a queue to have a photo taken. I was mislead and though this was part of the deal like Akershus, but, to find out later it is not.. The picture wasn't good and not worth buying in the end anyway.

So after the photo, we were told we could not be seating yet until the 'Celebration' inside was done.. it took about 5 minutes longer and we were let in. Our table was way in a back room seperate from the main dining room with about 12 tables. Prince Charming :lovestruc was there waiting for us.. this was quite nice.. he escorted the ladies to the table and made my DD12 blush.. Cinderella Followed .. and then our server made it over. Character time was much better here, but again, this area removed us from the main dining room where we miss most of the action and antics .. so when this would go on, we would have to leave our table and stand in the main dining area to watch.. which is sad and hard when you have small children , or , in our case , disabled family members.

Our server was attentive and DH and I ordered a Cocktail and said that we'd like to have coffee in the end as our beverage. He then asked me if I wanted water. I told him yes, he said bottled or tap.. I said , I prefer bottled, In FL the tap water tastes different to me. He then told me that was an upcharge, I asked if I could use my 'beverage' for that and he told me no.. so I took tap water, which, for some reason wasn't as bad as in other places.

The kids got smoothies again, and DD7 got milk.

This buffet was much cleaner and well kept. The food was put out in smaller portions and kept , in my opinion , hotter. I aslo liked that the stations were personally tended to by chefs. I tried hard not to look at the people in front of me.. and had a small bottle of hand sanitizer :rotfl: to make me feel better.

The food here was a notch higher in quality.

I started with some rolls, the Asparagus Soup and a Cesar Salad.

The rolls and salad were very good, the soup was not that hot which caused me to not want to eat it. I waited until a fresh soup was put out. This also wasn't that hot, but, acceptable and just ok.

I then sampled many items from the hot foods buffet. Some standouts were the Paella which was quite nice, and the Salmon. The pasta was also very good. It was sort of like a Rigatoni with a meat sauce. I also had Coq a Vin, Mussles and Turkey which were just ok.

I tried the Strawberry soup and I did not like this at all.. it should really be with the deserts. It tasted like a smoothie you eat with a spoon but very sweet.

My son was very excited about Prime Rib after his Kona Cafe Meal.. but this wasn't even close. I didn't like it much either. I did go back to see if I could get a different cut, mabye less fat and a little more rare. I did get a new piece and it was much better. DS did not like it .. period.. it wasn't the same as Kona but better than CP.

DD's both ate like birds.. DD7 really does not eat much, and DD12 did not like it much at all.

DH said he liked it better than CP , but, it is a buffet and he just can't get exicted about it and really didn't care for the food all that much. He did say he liked the Paella too, and , there were some Stir Fry's he liked. The Salmon was also ok, per hubby..

The highlight of this place though is the desert bar. Hands down best buffet desert bar I have seen in a long time. It was very pretty with neat little rows of tarts and cakes. The Fruit tarts were so good and fresh as were the mini Cheese Cakes. The strudel was yummy and piping hot. Everything I tried here was above par for a buffet.

When I got back from getting my deserts the step sisters and Lady Tremaine where in our area. They were very nice to DD7 and were the same ones we met earlier next to the castle. They were funny and in character . We enjoyed them alot, but, we also missed them when they left our area and 'performed' in the large dining room .. so we again were dissapointed in this table area.

Our server was attentive and prompt for the most part. He didn't do anything one way or the other to make an impression on.

So...

Service = 7 .. it was not the best service we've had but he did his job.
Food = 7 .. for a buffet the food was acceptable, one or two dishes for each of us would be rated above average.
Ambience= 5 , would be better if we were in the dining room, then I'd give a 7
Value = 7 , for a character buffet this one was more entertaining, offered a variety (prince charming etc) that you would not see anywhere else normally.

This is someplace that I can say I am glad we did, but , would not do again. This is a been there done that kind of place. While it didn't leave me totally cold like CP did, it didn't WOW me either. The place was much better organized and supervised then CP.. and the hand sanitizer gave me some added piece of mind.. :rolleyes1 ..

So now we are all done with Buffets.. we are Ready for Ohana :woohoo:, another first for us and another place I had tried really hard to get an ADR for.. so stay tuned...
