Just back - some DDP observations

We just got back from eight nights at WDW and did use the DDP. Overall, it was a great deal since we rented DVC points and did not have to pay rack rates for our room at the BW to get access to the DDP.

Here are some general observations:

1) Restaurants were generally very crowded. Several places were not accepting any walk up reservations. We were generally seated on time but we ate early to avoid having or seating time delayed. The only bad experience we had was at Coral Reef. We had a 5:00 AR and were told that the restaurant was running thirty minutes behind. How this was even possible given that dinner started at 4:30 was beyond me - nevertheless, we waited almost forty minutes before I simply walked out. The place was an absolute madhouse and several people were very upset (me included) by the fact that they had so overbooked the restaurant.

2) I had made AR's about 180 days out and was able to eat where we wanted. I did not have to make many changes since WDW did not change the EMH schedules at the parks as WDW has done in the past. I think WDW may now understand that changing park hours and EMH hours is not a good idea.

3) Service was generally very good, even though the servers knew we were on the dining plan. There were two glaring exceptions - at Boma, our server Lisa was simply awful and I noticed that other servers ended up doing her job. We have had her before, and she was just as bad so maybe it wasn't the DDP. At Le Cellier, our server was also terrible - she was unattentive and had a real attitude once she found out we were on the DDP.

4) All credits are still pooled. For our CS meals, my two kids were able to find items they liked on the kids menus. I do agree that the kids CS meals are very limited and it kep us from eating at a few CS places we like (Pizzafari being the example I can think of). Therefore, we did not commit the mortal sin of ordering any adult CS for our kids. We did, however, have an adults only meal at YS (kids were in the Sandcastle Club at the BC) and therefore used 4 credits at this restaurant. I did not try to give them back to WDW, pay OOP for a later meal or otherwise give penance for this terrible act. Given that we spent $40 dollars on childcare and another $60 on wine, I also don't think WDW cared very much.

5. Snack credits were actually hard to use - I thought we would go through these in a few days given that we buy ALOT of liquids in the parks. However, many soda vendors did not accept credits and the system was frequently down. I did use all snack credits and was generally able to use them on higher priced items - Dole Whips, ice cream, Boardwalk Bakery - than the $2.00 waters and sodas.

6. There was ALOT of food on the DDP. We did save alot of money. On our past trips, we typically did eat at nicer TS restaurants and the DDP saves alot of money at these places. We did order appetizers and desserts (on previous trips we would order one but not both), and rarely finished everything. The CS meal desserts were truly unncessary but were pretty good (at Tusker House, Seasons and Tangier's they were really good). Eating these (or, more accurately, portions of these) did make it harder to use our snack credits since we did not seem to want may snacks.

Any questions? I will try to tally the actual amount saved (and provide more detailed restaurant reviews) later.

We just got back last night too!! We were there for 10 days and are DVC owners so we also had to pay for the DDP. Still, we thought it was a great deal. We also had a hard time using all of our snack credits because of desserts with the CS we just were not hungry. Lots of food. If we didn't have the ddp, our kids ds9 dd7 dd3 would have shared meals, but because they had the credit we just got them a meal that a lot was wasted. Our longest wait was at Le Cellier during our 2nd week and the first day of free dining. We had about a 20 minute wait at Coral Reef, but it was so worth it. My DH said it was the best steak he had!! They told us the same thing that they were overbooked by about 30 minutes?? It was pouring rain as we got there though, so I think everyone just ran there early to get out of the rain?? I don't know....

On Tuesday the entire dining computer system crashed. We were at MGM and Epcot that day. At Pizza Planet they took our card but just wrote out how many credits we used. At Epcot we tried to get a snack and they wouldn't let us until the system came back on. By that point the person was called to say it would be back up in 20 minutes. At first we were told we had to pay cash, but then he gave our kids the ice cream and we just ate it while we waited for the system to reboot. Apparently there were sooo many ddp people the system just crashed!!

Gasp. I just wrote on the "share your experiences thread" about our poor service at Boma...guess what? Our server was Lisa, too. :rotfl: I should edit my post but might be hard to explain that poor service at Boma was not necessarily DDP related. ;)

I'm sorry that you had to wait so long at CR and then ended up just leaving. We had a 8:10 ADR and it took nearly 30 minutes to be seated. My kids were driving me nuts. It was a late dinner for us anyway. I saw many unhappy people waiting. Our dinner was wonderful, though. We weren't rushed through either (guess that explains all the waiting). It was a very nice meal.

Wow! Sounds like I'd better get prepared for a long wait at CR next month. I called to try to change my ADR time, but the CM said they're already overbooked. Gee, sounds like even with a 4:50 ADR time, I'll be lucky to get out in time to get a good Illuminations spot.

Hi, I just got back last night too.

I also found it very difficult to use all our snacks b/c so many vendors did not take them. This was very frustrating. I tried to use my "snack" for a fruit cup at Lotus Bloosom Cafe, and I was not allowed to. My mom and I ended up using our last 3 snack credits at POFQ before we left on 2 waters and grapes.

I agree that all of the restaurants were VERY crowded. Suprisingly, our longest wait was 30 min for our 9:50 am ADR at Cape May Cafe.

I hope everyone going down soon has made their ADRs. We ran into people who did not make any, and they could not get in anywhere! They actually had trouble using their TS credits!

Good luck to everyone!

This is SO true! We ended up with 5 extra CS credits on our last day so we treated a family to lunch before leaving the hotel! It saved us about $400 on our 8 day stay!

The parks were pretty crowded - certainly more crowded than the last two Augusts. However, since we got to the parks when they opened, we never waited more than 15 or 20 minutes for anything. By 2 or 3, all lines were very long and we either shopped or went back and swam.

OK ... I have a TON to do tonight, but I wanted to comment on one thing you mentioned that DH and I noticed. Once we mentioned the DDP, service declined DRAMATICALLY! I thought it was because most of our trip was during the free DDP, but maybe it's just because they know they get 18% and don't have to work????? ***?!?!?!

Off to work on my homework ... I'll be back. I have so many thoughts on the last week!!!!

It is hard to believe that someone like this could last long at a restaurant. She never picked up a used plate (the other waiters and waitresses at the tables near ours did this) and she took forever to bring back drink refills or to bring my wife's wine. You would think that the other employees would get so sick of this that they would complain. If I had not been on the DDP, I would have left no tip.

Actually all the systems crashed for a couple of days... had nothing to do with DDP.

We ate at FF, YS, GG, Boma, CP, LC and Kona Cafe on the DDP. We noted to all servers that we were on the DDP before eating. Only at Boma and LC was the service bad. Otherwise, service was very good. I am sorry to hear you had such a bad experience.

Thanks for the info. :)

What does that mean? :confused3

Frequently, we would go up to a ice cream/soda vendor to buy a drink and would try to use snack credits. However, we frequently had to pay cash since the computer that would tally the credits was not working and they coul not accept DDP at that time.

That would really annoy me. They should have some alternative system in place to deal with things like that. I would expect more from Disney.

I have had that happen at the store, when the register won't work. I can't believe that it would be so hard to figure out the sale the old fashioned way(add it up on paper) and then enter it into the computer when it does start working.

Thank you so much for the DDP review! We won't be there during free dining but you never know if the issues could carry over if the system (and the CM's!) get overstressed!

I'm a DVC member and am using the DDP for the first time in September, during free dining but that doesn't apply to me.

I have all my ADR's for the TS rest. but of course nothing booked for CS as it's not offered, nor would I be able to book CS as it was already hard to determine when to STOP and eat TS once a day. So, my question is, do you receive some kind of booklet when you check-in that tells you where all the CS places are you can eat at and where you can get snacks and such? If not, I just just create one myself off of all the information I can pull here; there's an excellent post that lists all the snack places and what you can get, before I leave for Disney.

It sounds like it's going to be busy that last week of September and I don't want to be wasting time in lines, only to find out that I can not buy anything using a snack credit. I've got better things to do with my time, like riding Everest again and again. :rotfl: :rotfl:

Thanks all!

Actually, from what I understand, they don't get 18%.

In April, DH and I were talking to our Wolfgang Puck's Cafe waiter. We had decided that his service was so great, we wanted to tip him extra. So we asked him how much tip he gets from the dining plan. We had read that "18% gratuity" was included. He said that they had been getting only 10% tip from the plan. But they had recently changed it to $5 for every customer on the plan. So I asked, "So you mean that no matter how much food we get on the plan, you will only get a $10 tip from Disney?" He said that was correct. :earseek: Even if our bill was $100 (and I think it was close), he only would get $10! Maybe this is only true for non-Disney owned restaraunts.

Anyways, we decided to tip him another $10 because he was awesome! I wish I could remember his name so I could call his supervisor and gush over the great service!!!

The only places we went were service was not great are Sci-Fi and Hollywood & Vine.
