Well, we got in last night and we are exhausted! We started out last Wed in Hollywood, but I won't go into that or Seaworld here, I'll do a trip report on everything later.
Okay, prior to this trip we (as a family) have only done WDW.
There are some things DL does better and some things WDW does better. If you are a true Disney fan, I really don't think you can go wrong at either place.

DLvsMK
INDY ROCKS!!! We did it three times and if I had to pick one attraction to vote that WDW needs, this would be it. We absolutley loved it. Don't miss this one!
POTC- MUCH better at DL.
Splash Mtn- I like MK better, the one at DL had some bumps as you climbed the hills that *really* hurt our backsides!
BTMR- Basically the same ride at both parks. Tried the "goat trick" twice, didn't work for me.
Space Mtn- Better at DL, of course, this owes to the refurb of last year. Very smooth. Although the queue for the attraction was odd, and even the CMs seemed to somehow get everyone turned around.
Haunted Mansion- Don't get me wrong, the Nightmare before Christmas theming was very well done. I just prefer the original Haunted Mansion.
Buzz Lightyear- Small difference to the one at MK, nothing worth noting.
Toontown- Prettier and better themed than MK.
Fantasyland- More compact, but had more to do. We really took advantage of EE mornings and got ALL the attractions knocked out in 2 days. I really wanted to ride Mr. Toad and I expected the DD's to be bored, but they loved it!
Alice In Wonderland was cute, but MK doesn't really need it.
Another attraction that WDW needs to consider making room for is The Golden Horseshoe and Billy Hill and the Hillbillies. We really enjoyed the show.

YES, the castle is small compared to MK, however, I preferred it. It's lovely and charming.
Speaking of charming, Main St USA was beautiful. And so was NO Square. I just wish we could have taken it in a bit more, but it was a little too crowded for just hanging out.
We ate at Blue Bayou, which was a lovely experience. A note to those who have never been and want to go, CALL 60 DAYS OUT AND MAKE PS's. They were turning people away left and right. Also, an 11:30 am reservation, will get you a great chance of a waterside table, which you will want. Trust me.

California Adventure
SOARIN is the BOMB. Rode it twice, I wish I could have ridden it 10 more times.
I personally didn't get much out of this park, but DH and DD's did. They LOVED California Screamin, rode it 4 times. I'm not a coaster person at all. The DL and MK rides are about as much as I can stomach. They rode Maliboomer and Hollywood Tower of Terror, we rode SunWheel (stationary gondolas, of course).
I did like the layout of California Adventure. It handles crowds much better.
Speaking of crowds, they were at DL in droves. I expected it on Sunday because of the locals, but not Mon, Tues and Wed. Someone in the park mentioned that there are school breaks for the year round schools in CA and I guess it was during this week.

I think the biggest difference between WDW and DL would be the CM's. We didn't encounter any :thumbsup2 rudeness at DL, but there were very few "magical" CM's. I wouldn't have even noticed this if we hadn't been to WDW before. I know the CM's make low wages, but aren't the wages comparable to WDW???
The one exception was the Front Desk Manager at Paradise Pier, I think her name was Chavon. She was lovely!

Oh and the Halloween decorations were lovely and understated. I was afraid they would take over the park theming, instead, they were the perfect accent.

We didn't see Mickey once! :guilty:

We really enjoyed this trip, and please don't concern yourself that you won'tlike DL as much as WDW. They are so similar, yet so different. I know that makes no sense. But we had a blast!!!

BTW, I'm the one who came on here begging for help packing because I was so sick, I stayed sick from Saturday til Thurs, so it really only affected me for about 2 days of out trip.
Unfortunately, I had another issue crop up on Wed at DL. Ladies, you know what I mean :( But I just loaded up on Advil and worked through the pain.

Had a great trip and thanks guys for all the pixie dust when I was sick, it really helped!!!

Glad you had a great time! Sounds like you enjoyed it, and now you can rotate between both! Our first trip to WDW is in May, and I can't wait to compare them. Although DL will always be my true home!

Glad you are feeling better!

Great report and I'm so glad you had a nice time at DL/DCA. It was nice to hear your perspective on DL since you're a WDW vet.

DCA is one of those parks that grows on you. When DH and I first went there back when it first opened, we just kinda wondered "Why?". Now when we go, we LOVE it there. Not as much as DL of course, but we still really enjoy spending some downtime at DCA (with a beer in hand of course :thumbsup2 ).

As a DL vet, I'll be making my way for a first visit to your homepark (WDW) in late January! I'm very excited. My DH doesn't even know we're going yet (this is his surprise Christmas gift from me), but it's a trip for just he and I - NO KIDS on this trip. We're staying at Saratoga Springs Resort, which looks and sounds beautiful.

Hope you enjoyed the rest of California! :sunny:

I am so glad you had a great trip :cool1: I was trying to send pixie dust your way. :wizard: Don't we all hate to see Aunt Rosie. :lmao: Your a real trooper(requirment for moms) :cheer2: :cheer2: :cheer2:

How about Aunt Flo? Thats what we call her in my neck of the woods. And boy, I hate her! Especially when she choses to join me on vacation!!

Works for me...but I bet the Flo's of the world will take issue....oh well, they'll just have to fend for themselves.
BTW-What is the "goat trick" you refer to??

I wish we would have had another day to spend at DCA. We didn't even get a chance to to It's Tough to be a Bug. We did, however, see "Aladdin". We aren't usually fans of shows, but this one was WONDERFUL! One of the highlights of the whole trip!

No kids on this trip?? I'm green with envy!!! You'll have a fabulous time!!!

Ok, I read about the "goat trick" on another Disney board (Micechat).
On Big Thunder Mtn, there is a goat on the right while you are on the coaster. You are supposed to maintain eye contact with the goat even while you are going around the curve and down the hill. Supposedly, if you are sucessful, you feel a real strange experience. Not diziness or vertigo, but something weird. When I got there, I couldn't remember if you are supposed to turn your head to maintain contact with the goat, or if you move your whole body while going past the goat. I tried it both ways, and it didn't work.
I wonder if Hydroguy can fill us in on this better. He knows everything there is to know about DL!

Funny that you ladies are talking about good ole Aunt Flo today. My son is one year old today and she showed up for his birthday!!! It was a good run though, 21 months without her visiting!! Of course it's right in time for my trip too!

Andrea,
The best advice I can give you is to buy a box of those heat things that you put on your stomach. I can't remember the name brand, but they come in a red box. They make them for knees and backs and also for the stomach. Helps keep Aunt Flo from hurting too bad. The heat really helps. And they last about 8 hours. If it is any consolation, it didn't completely dampen the trip, I was just excited to be there! I hope you have a great trip!
Hope this isn't too much TMI, but I went about 2 years without one too because I had my DD's close together and also breastfed. Well, actually I did have at least one in that time in order to end up with DD#2.
Wishing you lots and lots of pixie dust for your trip!! :wizard:
I think you'll be so excited to be there, it won't bother you too much!

I had my babies back to back and breastfed both too, so I was spared a visit from good old "Aunt Flo" for a while, but when she did come back, oh boy! My OB suggested that I take Aleve or Motrin to make her visits a bit lighter, if you know what I mean! Sorry guys, if this is inappropriate for the board. But hey! No secrets between friends, right? :rotfl:

Thanks for the trip report, sounds like you had a great time!

Thanks for sharing your thoughts. It was a fun read. :sunny:

The Goat Trick is something that's talked about on the various Disneyland Boards, and as Californian Dreamin said, you're supposed to watch the goat as you go around it & get a different sensation as you ride Big Thunder Mountain. I've done it several times, and don't remember anything special - but a lot of people talk about it.

Maybe another local who goes often might know ... Tink33 - iceskatejen -- Goofster57?

I'm glad you enjoyed yourself. We've visited WDW 3 times and DL we go about 2 times a year depending. (AP holders) I agree they are very similar yet so different. I love DL so much. But in the long run after all my trips I prefer different things at each park. I prefer the conveniece of how close everything is at DL. But I prefer all the options at WDW. Overall for dining, and options of parks and rides, I must say I prefer WDW. But I love it all. Gosh it's hard to stick with one destination. O.k. I love it all, how's that.

I am so glad you had a great trip. Thank you for sharing it all. :santa:

I do the goat trick every time I ride BTM. Sometimes it works, most the time it doesn't. It helps if I'm either riding solo or am on the right side of the car. Also, I think it helps to be in one of the last couple of cars.

BTW--WDW can't have the Billys. No way in heck to reproduce what they do because it takes the guys in the show (any of the 8 regulars and at least a dozen subs) to make it special. I just can't see WDW being able to pull off the show.

Great trip report! Even if it does compare DL to WDW. I used to get so frustrated reading similar reports, because I had never been to either park. Reading "DL Splash Mountain is just like the one at WDW" is so not helpful if you haven't been to either! Now that I have my first trip to DL out of the way, I get a bit more out of these.

Except for the goat trick. Is it like a head thing, dizziness? Or a stomach thing, like that weird tickly sensation when you go off a jump? All I remember about BTMRR is that it was pretty fast and very jerky, and I hadn't been on a roller coaster in about 25 years and WHAT A TOTAL RUSH!!! (Thank goodness for Bonine, that's all I can say.)

I also was sick the first few days of our trip. Thought it was just a sinus infection, but my really bad headaches then turned into queasiness as well, so maybe not. You're right, moms are troopers, we still went to the parks every day! I noticed my picture-taking and participation on rides picked up in a big way after I was feeling better. (Sigh) I can't wait to go back!

Ok, I have to know what this goat trick is!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :Pinkbounc
I have never heard about this before!

It's kind of a weird, floating feeling. Sort of like a bit of airtime w/o actually coming up out of your seat. I can do it best when I'm on the ride solo because I don't have to worry about knocking into the person next to me. I think it's worked for me maybe once or twice.
