I am just back from 2 weeks at DW.
Went with my 6 year old nephew and 4 other adult members of family.
Firstly, let me say that I had a great time and still love DW. However, I think we were surprised at some of my nephew's reactions. I expected him to be scared of certain attractions but I didn't expect him to be scared of EVERYTHING.
We went to AK first and from pulling up in the parking lot he was crying that he was scared (he has never seen so many cars and people in the same place at the same time!). Once he got in and saw some of the animals he was fine though and by the end of the say he was crying when we had to leave!
The next day we went to MK and he was a lot better - was fine in the parking lot and the tram because he remembered it from the previous day.
However - what never changed the whole 2 weeks we were there was his reluctance to do anything new. We had to persuade him to do new things all the time. He always enjoyed the attractions that we did but getting him to do them in the first place was always difficult - then he would have a great time.
I am pretty sure that some people must have thought we were really mean when we were in the line for Buzz and TSM and he was crying that he was scared and didn't want to ride. We just kept talking to him and saying that it would be ok and that it was just pretend etc. When he did the rides he was fine and he spent ages afterwards talking about Buzz and how he spun everyone around!
Having said that, the only rides he wanted to do again were IASW, the Carousel and the Tomorrowland Indy Speedway.
He was also scared of the parades and shows. He wouldn't get too near the kerb for any of the parades. He wanted to see because he was leaning forward to see but wouldn't go any nearer. When Donald dressed as a pirate in Dream Along with Mickey, he hid behind my Mum and watched from there!
I think he missed out on quite a lot of things - so that was disappointing. Having said that, towards the end of the trip he was excited to go to MK and he met the characters in Epcot. So he did get something out of the trip.
We knew when he really liked something because he had his own camera and when he liked something he asked for his camera to take pictures. We spent all day at DHS and the only time he asked for his camera was at Osborne lights! He also spent ages at AK taking pictures of the unusual things - the things that most people probably wouldn't notice - the benches that were shaped like animals, the sculptures and the general theming.
I guess the moral of the story is that kids sometimes like the strangest things - perhaps things that you didn't anticipate. And then don't like the things you thought they would. We had to learn to go with the flow - and because of that he got a lot out of the trip - just not what we thought he would!
