We just got back yesterday from a magical trip to San Diego + Disneyland! Since these boards have been so helpful for me in planning, I wanted to share my thoughts on our DLH stay and opening night of OBB:

Disneyland Hotel was the BEST! I was soooo happy with my choice to book here. Tons of magic, starting with:

- A complimentary upgrade upon check-in from a standard room to a beautiful pool-view room that was ready when we arrived at 9:30 AM! Double-win! (I did let the front desk associate know that we were celebrating our anniversary and babymoon and I asked if there was any chance of an upgrade, and she made it happen! So definitely don't hesitate to ask nicely, and if they can do it they will!)

- Our 1/2-day pool cabana rental was the perfect way to spend the late-morning/early-afternoon while waiting for OBB. Great cabana location, great amenities, and I was reminded again of how stellar the pools are at DLH- it's truly like a mini waterpark! Definitely the best pool scene on Disneyland property. And for anyone worried like I was about construction noise, it was nonexistent- and we were there on a weekday during working hours. Another thing I worried about was if the pool would be too crowded and hard to socially distance, but neither were the case- we had plenty of space to swim and play in the pool and waterslides without getting too close to anyone!

- Amazing food! My husband said our pool cabana lunch was one of the two best meals of the entire trip- and that includes our earlier stay at the Four Seasons San Diego. He got the tuna poke bowl and panko-crusted long beans, while the 4-year-old and I also loved our Hawaiian cheeseburger and sweet potato fries. Yesterday we treated ourselves to Dole Whips for breakfast on the wonderful patio at Tangeroa Terrace- just perfect!

- While the rooms at both DLH and GCH are a lot less luxe than you would expect for the price point, I find the theming of the DLH rooms so magical that it almost makes up for it! My son even applauded after seeing the headboard light up and play music, which was so cute. :) Love all the little Mickey touches throughout the room and bathroom, too.

- Literally the only thing I didn't love was the longer walk to the parks as opposed to the proximity of GCH, which we really felt at the end of the night when we were rushing out of CA Adventure at 11 PM during a sudden lightning storm! When we go back next year with a baby in tow, we might consider the Grand just for the closer location. It will really sting to have to shell out more $$ for a hotel we don't love as much, though... so we just might stay at DLH again and make do with the walk, which really isn't THAT long.

OBB was a blast, and I'm so glad we did it! There were some hiccups at the beginning, but the night thankfully got better and better.

- Clearly I'd been away from DL too long, because we made the rookie mistake of showing up to the turnstiles just before 4 PM, thinking we could afford to rest in the room after our pool day and that we'd still be left with plenty of time to enjoy the park. That was a big OOPS, since we showed up to a looooong line to enter the park and then another long line to get our party wristbands. By the time we were done with the lines, it was time for our 5 PM reservation at Wine Country Trattoria, so definitely a bummer to lose a whole hour of our ticket time in line.

- Wine Country Trattoria was also running late, so our 5 PM reservation was more like 5:20. The restaurant was very nice about it though and offered us a free appetizer to make up for the wait. The food was definitely good, but very generic Italian fare, nothing special, and wayyyy overpriced for the OBB dining package. But the Halloween dessert was really fun (and yummy), and the Oogie Boogie popcorn bucket was a big hit with my son.

- We had hoped to hit a few rides before the first parade, but got stuck close to the front of the line for Monsters Inc. when the ride had to be temporarily stopped due to someone dropping a backpack on the track. A 5-min wait turned into like a 25-30-min wait- oof!

- The first parade also started 20 mins late- I'm starting to feel like the theme of our first few park/party hours was all about waiting! But the parade was awesome, the characters interacted with my son in the front row, and afterwards we made a lot more progress on rides and trick-or-treating!

- By waiting till after the first parade to hit the trick-or-treat trails, we had no lines to wait in for those, and they were a HUGE hit with my son! We only hit 3 of the trails, but between the 3 of us we came home with bags absolutely stuffed with candy! Disney is definitely generous with the trick-or-treating offerings. :)

- We got to ride WEB SLINGERS on the standby line, no need to deal with getting into a virtual queue- and it was only a 30-minute wait and soo much fun!

- Toy Story Midway Mania was an actual walk-on ride- never seen that before!

And of course, the ambience and magic were so special! I'm definitely planning on us going back next year, either pre-Halloween again or pre-Christmas, and hopefully by then Covid will be long gone so we can stay 3-4 days and see everything. It was a little hard to be so close to the main park and castle, Star Wars Land, etc and not be able to go in, but I felt like just going for the party was safest in light of my little one being unvaccinated. And while the party crowd was bigger than I'd hoped, I also felt pretty safe with our masks, and it wasn't like people were close enough to breathe down your neck in line or anything like that.

We also had a fabulous meal at Ralph Brennan's just before leaving yesterday, and the waitress was kind enough to offer us complimentary beignets for our anniversary! SO delicious, and the people-watching from the patio, with the Disney Halloween music playing, was so great.

Let me know if you have any questions on anything!

How much was the Cabana rental at DLH? Was there a certain time frame for the rental? What's included? Do they give you snacks and drinks? Any pics of whats included? Also do they have power at the Cabana where you could plug in your laptop?

Thank you for a great report!! I was curious to hear how OBB was going this year (and hard to judge by some Disney YouTubers), glad to hear realistic feedback. :earsboy:

I live nearby and was wondering how Disney guests were doing during all that. Was pretty wild for sure, as Anaheim rarely sees lightning vs WDW and other parts of the country.

Cabana rental is $249 for half-day (4-hour blocks, either 9:30 AM-1:30 PM or 2-6) and $299 for the full day. I didn’t get any detailed pix, but the cabana is great and includes a couch, loveseat, overhead TV and two chaise loungers up front. The included snack was a really nice fruit plate (with Mickey-shaped watermelon!) and 6 bottled waters. And yes, they did have a power outlet!

The lightning was scary for sure!! So not used to that here in CA. Also there was a lot of confusion with CMs thinking it was part of the Halloween special effects/decor, but luckily my husband could tell it was real and he hustled us out of there!

Very true!

If I find it I'll post screenshot, but someone posted a great clip on Instagram with Oogie above main gate to DCA and lightning strike in background (not near park), it really looked like a photoshop or promo ad for OBB.

That lightning storm passed right over our neighborhood! It was the most intense lightning I've ever experienced and sounded and felt like bombs were being dropped. My thoughts went immediately to the Halloween Party at DL and I was worried for everyone there. I don't think the storm passed directly over the parks, which is good, but it was still super scary and dangerous for people outdoors. There were numerous structure fires in OC that night.

Glad you enjoyed the DLH. I do like some of the food there, but my picky kids do NOT (don't even say the word sweet potato fry to them) so I don't know when we will stay there again. We do love the pool area and slides, though.

I totally agree with this. Sometimes everything just seems sooo sugarcoated. I think I've watched at least four reviews and none of them mentioned the parade being late. I did skip through some parts because I didn't want to watch the whole parade before I get there so perhaps it was mentioned and I jsut missed it. Also very useful info about how long it took to get in and get your wristband.

How cool that Toy Story was a walk on. I was just wondering about doing them Pixar Pal Around at a OBB but wonder if it's not a great use of time. I definitely want to do it when it's dark. Did you not do Villains Grove?

I'll just tag onto your review if you dont mind instead of starting my own thread.

We were staying at GCH on the night of the party so we went to the side entrance at 5:30pm and were able to get right in without a wait and there's a table there with wristbands, maps and bags. We went straight to Web Slingers and literally walked straight on it, they have a queue set up for party guests but no one was in line for it. From there we went to Toy Story and Incredicoaster and both were straight walk ons. Like no one in line type of walk on. Felt so strange! We did pretty much all of the treat trails, couldnt do the last one because our bags were too full. We never did the parade and chose to just do rides and stop for dinner at SmokeJumpers, which ended up being the longest wait of the night, at about 25 minutes from getting in line to getting food.

Lots of people though and lots of babies! i said this before on another thread how surprised I was by this. Never did the Villain walk thru, just a CRAZY long line that was wall to wall people abut 6" away from eachother and we just decided it was not worth the risk. Party was fun, but if I'm being honest, probably wont do it again.

Will also add we rented a daybed at GCH on our last day, we had a 7pm flight out so I went down at 9am to the pool and they had daybeds open and I could take my pic, They asked if we had kids and I said no, they said definitely take one in the back corner they are the quietest and they were right! $99 for the full day and it was worth every penny. We watched people streaming in around noon with no where to sit and they were NOT happy. The daybed and chilling out there was the best call we made our whole trip, we loved it after walking 30.2 miles over 3 days. As away if you have any questions!

Yeah, there was definitely a semi-major delay with the parade- the Headless Horseman finally came out and everyone was cheering and so excited it was finally starting, and then there was like another 10+ minutes delay after that! I was really starting to worry it would be cancelled last-minute, so it was a relief when it eventually happened. Interesting that the opening night reviewers didn't mention this!

We skipped Villain's Grove- I thought it might be too spooky for my 4-year-old, plus the lines looked super long!

Argh, I soo wish I had thought of using the GCH entrance to get into DCA and get our wristbands- I don't know why I just assumed we'd have to show proof of staying there, but I could have easily made a meal reservation for us on property. Definitely kicking myself for the time wasted, but will do better next year! And yes, I agree with you about the surprise of the crowd size. I thought limited-ticket events were supposed to make the park feel a lot less crowded, but it felt like a typically busy night at DCA for us. Then again, our short wait for Web Slingers and walking onto Toy Story probably wouldn't have happened on a normal night. I was also surprised by the number of babies and felt worried for them since they were too little to be masked. Hopefully everyone will stay healthy!

For those who have been to OBB already what is the best ride strategy and strategy for Villains Grove? Because the event is so limited in time, I don't want to waste time in any long ride lines. We want to do all of the treat trails, Villains Grove, and watch the second parade. Beyond that, ride as much as we can. We will be at DCA for another half day on the trip so it is not essential that we ride everything, but would like to do as much as we can on the night.

my advice for a touring strategy might not work with people with small kids because we did a ton of walking back and forth across the park. BUT, if you are up for that then we started with Web Slingers just before 5pm then did all the Pier rides, everything to this point was walk on. We then did alot of treat trails. Just remember the lines look long for the treat trails but they go extremely fast and theres like 5+ candy drops in each treat trail. So when you enter in it's just not for 3 pieces of candy its 5+ spots along the route with candy, bags of chips, bagged veggies or fruit, etc. So you get ALOT of treats per treat trail. We then did Radiator Springs (posted wait time was 35 minutes but ended up being 20) then did Luigis (posted 15 min and that was accurate). Then went to Soarin (posted wait of 20 min ended up being 10). Then did dinner at Smoke Jumpers, longest wait was here. Then hit up a couple more treat trails, did some shopping and a couple more rides. We went back to GCH around 10pm. Villain line was ENORMOUS so we passed (as I mentioned above) so if this is a super important thing to you I would stop here maybe first and line up.

I also just wanted to add during our 3 days at DL and CA, the best things I had to eat were (and man we ate a TON, thank the lord we walked 10 miles a day):

CA : DRINK: Affogato from Shmoozies (OMG this is pretty amazing and never wouldve tried it if it wasnt for Insta : Disneyfoodblog (let the ice cream really melt down before you start drinking it, trust me!)
FOOD: Buffalo chicken Pretzel from Pyms. Huge helping and super good. Not to spicy, very filling.
DL : DRINK: Tatooine Sunset drink from Galaxys Edge. We each got this 2x and if you have a bottle of water, when it gets down to the last 1/3 of the drink add water and it still tastes great and you get more out of it.
FOOD: Street taco plate from Rancho del Zocalo

This is great information, thank you. Do you know at what time they transition Webslingers to a physical queue? We don't have small kids so we are good and don't mind walking. At this point I don't plan to eat a meal during the event or shop, and we plan to stay until 11:00 PM (trying to be inside right at 3:00 PM). I think the only difference from your plan is we want to see the parade and do the Villains Grove.

Not toally sure when it got switched over. We got to the queue at like 4:45 and there was hardly anyone there in line.
