Just Back.... Holy Construction!

I just got back, and wow, the amount of construction is crazy!
Downtown Disney is a mess, of course. The road is torn up. There are scaffolds and barriers everywhere. During the day it is incredibly loud because of the heavy equipment and power tools being used. And on Friday nights the traffic funneling in stretched all the way back to the highway turnoff (thankfully I had no intentions of shoving my way into it!).
Animal Kingdom is infested by barriers. There's a big one around the front perimeter of the tree, and another around the entirety of the lake below Everest.
Epcot and Hollywood Studios are largely free of the barriers (except for a rather obtrusive one on the main street of DHS), but so much is closed that it's hard not to notice.
The Polynesian barely resembles a resort, much less a deluxe one. The lobby has been reduced to a small corridor with giant curtains on one side, and your breakfast at Kona is likely to be interrupted by power tools (we ate there twice, and both times it was). The volcano is covered with scaffolding, and there are barriers all over the resort, particularly on the eastern edges.
Now I want to say, I'm all for this. Though I might quibble with this change or that, updating and refurbishment is largely a plus in my book. But I have the luxury of being a repeat visitor, and at that, one who spends half of each visit working amidst the sounds of forklifts and power tools at the OCCC. I do feel bad for the once-in-a-lifetime folks, though. It's a shame that some people's only experience with WDW will be colored by so much construction. And I feel bad for those who didn't entirely appreciate the level of construction at the Polynesian, and booked there anyway. I can't imagine it would be all that pleasant to spend a trip there.
In any case, I would guess that in the run-up to the 50th anniversary construction is going to be more pervasive than usual, but man, it's difficult to imagine much more than this.....

It's amazing to me that they managed to keep the Poly open through that construction.

Downtown Disney is easily avoidable and not really necessary on any trip, at least for us. But yeah, what a mess.

The hub and the walls in AK are just ugly. Especially in MK, I do feel for first-time/only-time visitors who come and that's what they are seeing.

It's an exciting time at Disney world! So many changes and new things being built Disney will remain fun and exciting for years to come!

Yeah, it's a mess and very unsightly. I feel for the people that are first-time or only-time visitors coming when everything looks so bad.

I agree! I'm excited about a lot of the stuff they are doing as well. Quite a difference from 2008 when the economy was down and NOTHING was going on.

The hub isn't as bad as I thought. I kept envisioning disneyland's tiny hub and imagining the chaos construction would cause. DtD was pretty bad but I didn't really mind it too much. AK was pretty intrusive but I'm excited they're investing in the park. But holy moly, the poly is bad. Shockingly bad. We went there for breakfast and like the op said, there's barely a lobby. It's loud. Construction everywhere. We were trying to walk to the GF and kept hitting walls everywhere. Even the beach is blocked at one point. There was an entire wing of rooms closed. I gave up my dream of finding the dole whips pretty quickly. I just wanted out of there.

Yeah, I mean construction sucks, but it's also necessary. I'm most excited about all the additions at AK, but right now it's more like Construction Wall Kingdom! While it's mildly annoying to see the construction, it's easy to forget about it once you get into the fun stuff. It will be nice when they are done though!

What construction is going on at MK?

Mostly it's the Hub area and filling in some of the waterways to make more room for foot traffic. This will alleviate the congestion after Wishes as people try to leave. Right now, most of the south end of the hub is walled off though. There might be a few other minor things going on (scrims on some buildings I think) but that's the major thing.

It is exciting that changes are being made! I was talking with my husband a while back about the new attractions that had been added since my college program back in 2005. Let's just say, not a whole lot has been added since then (unless, of course, you count DVC properties which I don't). So, now that they are making all of these changes, the anticipation of what's to come is exciting. However, I can understand how that would not be the case for first timers and only timers. For them, they aren't aware of how few changes there have been, so all they see is construction. And, if they won't be back ever (or for another 10-20 years), the construction could put a damper on some of their memories.

Have to agree the whole DTD area is congested and in general a big mess!

Our motto has been to avoid it all together until later next year, when the construction is supposed to be complete.
Sad because we love to dash over there for a meal or a walk thru the shops.

Cant wait for the Poly to be done and Trader Sam's

We are going in just under a month and we don't get to take a trip very often because it is just too cost prohibitive. For someone who loves taking pictures, I'm not looking forward to having all the construction up to take away from the normally beautiful shots I like to take. Glad for the updates and improvements though.

I feels bad for first timers. Any idea when some of these projects will be completed.

I have no problem with the construction... but these projects just seem to go on forever. When is the Hub and DTD supposed to be done? Anyone think we'll actually see Avatarland before the end of the decade?

Ugh. We booked Christmas Eve dinner at Kona Café for our group of 12. Hope it isn't too loud or messy. Nothing else available for our big party at this late date :(. And we love Kona Café!

I don't think we're allowed to reference particular sites, but there are reports that the Poly lobby will be open again on December 20 and some photos of the new ceiling lights, flooring, the benches moving in, center water feature (at least I think it's a water feature) the walls/curtains coming down in some areas, and the progress overall. Our Poly stay begins January 7 and we're happy that at least the lobby will be in better shape then!

It's pretty crazy. I've been several times, and will definitely be back. But last month, I took my mom and mother-in-law for what will probably be their once-in-a-lifetime trip, and I was pretty disappointed that things were such a mess. We had dinner at Ohana, and while I knew that the Poly was undergoing a major renovation, I was not prepared for what a mess it was. It's a shame that such a beautiful resort is now in shambles. Animal Kingdom has walls up EVERYWHERE - and that park is mostly about experiencing the beauty and being immersed in the environment. The hub at MK - what a mess. And I can't even talk about Downtown Disney.

I understand that once all of this is complete, it will be even better. But why did they have to take all this on at once? It really made me sad that I worked so hard to plan and pay for this trip for them and they didn't get to experience the true beauty of WDW.
