Just back from the Mexican Rivera...Any Questions?

jdstr,

Sorry for your experience. Thankfully, none of our group of 19 got ill.

For what it's worth, Norovirus is not food poisoning, but rather the most common culprit in cruise ship "stomach flu". More than likely, it was contracted on the ship from touching a railing or something of the sort. You may have caught it from touching something in Mexico but more likely it was the ship.

Norovirus is spread by an oral-fecal route. Yuk, but basically, after going to the bathroom when one does not wash their hands thoroughly enough, they can deposit the virus onto objects which are then touched by other people, who subsequently get that virus into their mouth and they become infected.

It is very contagious and spreads rapidly. You can "shed" virus before your symptoms become obvious and that's how it spreads so rapidly.

The cruise lines try to limit infection by first educating the passengers in hand washing and when large groups come together, try to kill any virus that might be on hands with the gel and wipes.

When an outbreak does occur, the best, but most inconvenient, way to limit spread is by quarantine and preventing further transmission by limiting passengers' touching of common objects like the soda bar, ice cream machines and serving utensils.

I noticed that the CMs were constantly cleaning the handrails and elevators as well.

They did an excellent job of containing the virus considering past experience on cruise ships with Norovirus infecting the majority of passengers.

I would reassure any readers that wanted to go to Cabo Wabo that their food or Mexico in general was not as likely a cause of the Norovirus as was the ship/passengers themselves.

I'd be happy to answer any other questions if anyone has any.

Just returned from LA and our cruise late last night. We had a blast and yes the weather wasn't the greatest the two sea days! We probably wouldn't do the Mexican Riviera again because of that. That being said, Cabo was beautiful! We walked over to Mendando (sp?) beach. It was a long walk and very hot. (I would recommend the water taxi which we did on the way back!)
The beach was okay (way overkill on vendors coming up to you every 20-30 seconds! It became very annoying!) My husband and oldest daughter para sailed (sp?) and we swam in the water which was beautiful.
IN Mataztlan my husband and daughters did the ziplines and tequila factory tour that was part of the package. They enjoyed the ziplines but could have skipped the tequila factory. My husband commented that this port seemed to be the most poverty stricken.
In PV our excursion was the Las Caletas. This was run well, bottled water and snacks on the boat ride out, the beach was wonderful, lunch was okay.
We enjoyed the snorkeling and kayaking. It did seem like everything was a little too scheduled. Lunch buffet was just okay... not enough kid friendly food, however no was hungry when we left.
There was some kind of illness going around on the ship. Salt and pepper were removed from the tables, serving yourself at the buffets, drink stations and ice cream station stopped and cast members had to remove their lanyards so no more pin trading.
Thankfully we were all healthy until Sunday evening when our oldest came down with a 24 hour vomiting episode and the younger one started early this morning.
We were sorry that the cruised ended as we have decided that we could spend two weeks aboard the Disney Magic easily! Looking forward to our next Disney Cruise!

Sorry to hear about everyone getting so sick. I am thankful that we didn't have anything like that in our group, although a couple friends my daughter made were sick at the end of the cruise.

I am curious how the information that the illness came from Cabo Wabo was confirmed? Is there a way to pinpoint it to a specific restaurant? I'm sure not everyone who became sick ate there (were there sick people on the Royal Carribean ship also?). My family goes to Cabo each year to our timeshare and we have eaten at Cabo Wabo everytime. We have never gotten sick there, ever.

I hope everyone is feeling better.

Did anyone book another Cruise while onboard? If so, what date did you book? We booked on the Nov. 21, 2009 cruise on the Magic.

We were also on this cruise (hello Susan and Deb!) and had a great time. I had no idea so many people were sick, although it was obvious something was amiss with the drink station and buffets no longer self serve. MY DDs and I came home with sore throats, but thankfully no stomach flu. I am sorry for those folks that got ill on thier vacation. I hope their recovery is swift.

We really enjoyed Mazatlan. We hired a driver from Mazatlan Frank and spent the day with him in a nice air conditioned van. There were six of us. Andres was our driver. He was very, very pleasent and very informative. We saw old town, which we thought was beautiful, the newer resort/shopping area and the hills above town. We went to lunch at Tony's on the beach. It was very good.

In Cabo, we took a taxi to a resort with Nikki Beach in the name. Loved it. Very nice, not crowded and good food. Had a great time.

In PV, we went to the Krystal resort. It was crowded, although it was close to the dock and had a lot of pools. I would re-think this port if I were to go again. I heard some folks took a taxi up to the hills and had a great time. I'd find a nicer, less crowded resort or tour the town next time.

The whole trip was fabulous. The food was superior to our last DCL to Mexico in June 2005. Dinners were outstanding. We canceled dinner at Palo because we were enjoying the food and servers so much in our regular rotations. We did have brunch at Palo, which was excellent.

Now, back to work, laundry, house guests, shuttling kids...........:laundy:

What movies are being shown now?
I thought I read somewhere that it is the following:
WALL-E
Prince Caspian
Enchanted
Road Trip
Game Plan
National Book of Treasure 2
Camp Rock (oh, lucky me:rotfl:)
Ratatouille

Were there any more?

Yes, there were tons sick on the RCCL too - we rode a shuttle back with some people on that cruise.

Not sure how they 'confirmed it' but that's what we were told by numerous staff members (nurse, doctor, and our two wait staff). Who knows - maybe they're just saying that so they can push off the blame... :-(

I was planning on going to Krystal's in PV, but you said you would rather go to another resort in the "hills". Any suggestions for other resorts in PV with nice pools that take cruise passengers?

Thanks.

Hello S&D MOM

It was not a bad resort. We enjoyed it, but I prefer a smaller place.
I would say get there early and get lounge chairs near an umbrella. We had to wait for people to leave to get chairs in the shade as there are not many umbrellas. My 11 year old got her hair braided there for $8! It was a bargain, and very well done. Also, be sure to take towels from the ship. I was hoping for a smaller resort, otherwise it was OK.

You're on to something with "push off the blame". The cruiseliners are very jumpy about Norovirus outbreaks and the impact they have on their sales. From a conspiracy theory standpoint, they may be asking/telling the staff to give out that information to help ward off bad publicity. As an aside, our group was very concerned when our assistant server was replaced on the night of the same day they started the increased safety measures.

He was able to return the next day and reported that he had hurt his arm in an ice machine. Phew.:woohoo: That is until the next morning when we had splurged on a second couples massage with the same two therapists we had on the first sea day. When we arrived, my therapist told me that my wife's therapist was unavailable that morning. Being nosey like I can be, I asked why not. The answer?..."she injured her arm":scared1: (insert favorite scary music here).

All kidding aside, if you received reports of illness on RCCL from their passengers while on your excursion in Cabo, you (and others) most likely contracted the illness from them and it was brought back to the Magic at that point. Pure conjecture but the timing fits right - 48 hours later (just past incubation time) was when the stepped up measures went into place on the Magic.

Additionally, the RCCL passengers couldn't have gotten sick from Cabo Wabo if the illness was around before then. Even if people who didn't appear ill started feeling ill immediately after eating at Cabo Wabo, they likely were just showing initial signs of Norovirus infection at that time and were also contagious. Typical food poisoning (Staph or E. coli) can take several hours (up to 12) to present it's first symptoms. Norovirus takes around 36 hours (sometimes up to 2 and a half days) after exposure for symptoms to begin. Is that when your family got ill?

Misinformation gets spread rapidly, especially when things are uncertain. People want explanations. For instance, the recent E. coli scare that only suspected tomatoes as the culprit (making all the fast food restaurants pull their tomatoes and destroying the tomato farmers financially) was only just recently confirmed by the CDC to actually be from jalepenos instead. This was after weeks of work.

"Confirming" Norovirus from Cabo Wabo in such a short period of time would be nearly impossible, even if the CDC were involved from the very start. The diagnosis in a single individual can be confirmed in a few hours with the appropriate lab test. I imagine the ship may have the capability to do this test because of the frequent cruiseliner outbreaks and the desire to identify its presence immediately and stave off further spread of the infection. But, isolating the initial source of the infection is quite complicated and can be very time consuming.

Future cruisers, give Cabo San Lucas a chance. Don't avoid Cabo Wabo if you planned on going. It's a fun place to have a drink with friends/family.

Wash your hands frequently and well with soap and water. By the way, Norovirus has physical characteristics which make it less susceptible to alcohols and detergents like those in the wipes and gels offered by cruiseliners. They can be helpful (ie. better than nothing).

Wash your hands frequently and well with soap and water. Nothing is as effective as washing your hands in warm soapy water for 30 seconds. Sing the ABCs twice and you're done.pirate:

Cruise healthy and happy.

I know I sound like a know-it-all, but I'm only a doctor.

Norovirus takes around 36 hours (sometimes up to 2 and a half days) after exposure for symptoms to begin.

Can't Norovirus symptoms appear as soon as 12 hours after exposure? I quote the following CDC webpage:

http://www.cdc.gov/ncidod/dvrd/revb/gastro/norovirus-factsheet.htm

I'm pretty sure I've been hit with NV symptoms very soon after exposure (on a cruise ship, of course). Of course, I can't prove I had NV (no lab tests were performed), but the symptoms were pretty similar.

You (and the CDC) are correct. The onset varies in a bell curve from 12 hours to 60 hours with the most common onset being at around 36 hours. If you had diarrhea also, you likely had a Norovirus infection.pirate:

Oh yeah, I had NV then. I've caught it on land a couple times also. You'd think you'd become immune to the virus after getting it a few times. Does NV mutate like the flu?

They told us 30 hours, give or take. I first felt sick at 5:30 Wed night (Mazatlan day, almost exactly 30 hours after eating lunch at Cabo Wabo)... I don't place any blame on Disney. I'm not out for a refund or anything - just bad luck. When I took my son down Thurs AM, the first thing they said was "OH, did you eat at Cabo Wabo??" The RCCL passengers we talked to said they were told the same thing - that it was Cabo Wabo that 'did it.'

Who knows... I'm just sad I missed half my cruise... all four of us did and it stunk. Finally today I feel better, although my hip still hurts from the shot, and my arms are a MESS from the blown veins from the IVs.

Unfortunately, the immunity that comes from being infected with the Norovirus is incomplete and short-lived (unlike other viral illnesses like chicken pox, measles, etc).

A vaccine is in the works however. I'm guessing that if the vaccine is successful, the cruiselines will require documentation of receiving the vaccine prior to embarkation...pirate:

I'm sorry your cruise was ruined and that you are suffering from the treatment still despite recovering from the infection.

The reports of passengers from both ships being ill is suspicious for Cabo Wabo being a central source of infection and I may be wrong. :confused3 Odds are still in favor of contracting the illness while onboard either ship. For the health professionals to make the statement that Cabo Wabo 'did it' without documented proof from a detailed investigation (instead of suspicion) is unprofessional and borderline slander.

For instance, my comments are based upon probability and prior medical studies/research in this area. I would not and have not said the cruiselines ARE the source of infection. Rather, just the most likely source of the infection based upon the previous research.

The important thing here is the wake up call that all the cruiselines can be involved despite strict prevention protocols on board. pirate:

Oh yeah, I'm gonna get me some of that! :thumbsup2

I'm on a Yahoo Van Halen board who's members are big fans of Sammy Hagar. They say that there have been many instances of people getting sick after dining at Cabo Wabo.
