Just back from Poly Concierge and VERY VERY disappointed

Just back from an 8 night stay at the Polynesian Lagoon View Concierge. I’m reluctant to say this but I am very disappointed. I know others have great things to say …. But having been to the Poly concierge for the past three years … this year being the fourth year in a row … I’d say there are MAJOR differences being in Tahiti vice Hawaii building.

The best analogy I can use is this: Picture for a moment being invited to a wedding by a couple who you know to always do things “high class” (only the finest china, the best restaurants, the royal treatment). Having known this couple for years, and been to their home many times, you are use to the royal treatment and expect no less for this wedding. Since the invite doesn’t state otherwise you assume this is a formal affair like the other weddings you have attended for this family.

You show up on the wedding day only to find you are at VERY overcrowded cookout picnic with paper plates and plastic eating utensils.

Think about how you would feel at that moment … expecting the fine wedding and it being at a picnic. Of course, people have great times at picnics … but if you were expecting otherwise you will surely be disappointed and unhappy and feel out of place.

This year’s stay at the Poly concierge was a huge disappointment. The concierge bldg was way OVERCROWDED. Instead of silverware and plates/bowls and coffee mugs, there was paper plates, forks, spoons, etc. and paper napkins…. And that delicious kona coffee had to be from a styrofoam cup!!!

The lounge was like sitting at a McDonald’s booth – where you had to pick up and clean up after yourself. In the past the concierge staff was always fussing about picking up and cleaning up your table as you finished a plate. NOT THIS YEAR. Our first night there we left our paper plates, etc. on the table …. An hour later they were still there and the table hadn’t been cleared. We promptly cleaned up after ourselves and realized this was the norm now. This was definitely not the way it was in the old building.

I do NOT in anyway blame the concierge staff. They were working overtime trying to keep the food replenished and other things … and they seemed to be in short supply. Those who were there were working as best as they could and I felt sorry for them. The place was simply OVERCROWDED and they were overwhelmed. It was hard to find someone to help you in the lounge area they were so busy in the background. The lines were horrible and the food often ran out. One night the wine bottles were depleted at 5:30 – we were there for at least 45 minutes chatting with someone and the bottles were not replaced with new ones. This type of thing happen over and over during our stay.

In my opinion the Tahiti bldg should have been refurbished before the Hawaii. I don’t remember the Hawaiii bldg looking shoddy and unkept-- but the Tahiti bldg certainly has problems. I got the overall feeling I was staying at a beach resort rather than a fine deluxe hotel at Disney. The elevator rumbled and had many problems throughout the week. The doors on both ends of the bldg were acting up constantly an were not in service for at least 2 days of our stay. People got angry and would pry open the door and just leave it open for anyone to come in. Cigarette smoke was in the halls – even though we were in a non-smoking section of the bldg. We were one of the unlucky ones to get a musty smelling room …. With mold and mildew growing in various places in the bathroom! (NEVER had this problem in the Hawaii bldg).

The walk to the main pool was long …. And at night the lights were not working due to the construction at Hawaii. In order to walk along the beach one had to walk past the construction at Hawaii which was a nuisance. Many of the construction vehicles used the walkways to go back and forth …. And they were not always curteous. They often drove too fast. The electric water parade does not stop in front of the Tahiti bldg but down closer to the pool area – therefore the view was not as nice as at the Hawaii bldg. And of course there is NO piped in music for the fireworks. Also …the view of the castle from the first floor rooms is not as clear as from Hawaii --- from the angle of the Tahiti bldg there are many trees growing in the island that is in the middle of the lagoon that block a good view of the castle.

I think if you haven’t experienced Poly concierge in the past you probably don’t know what you are missing …. And will enjoy your stay . But if you have stay poly concierge in the past don’t expect the same experience as before …. It is vastly different.

I'm starting to wonder if "concierge level" itself isn't becoming a victim of its own success...

I've been reading Disney newsgroups etc for about six years and I'd never even heard of concierge level until this latest round of trip planning... Now it seems like *everyone* wants to stay concierge and feels like they're missing out if they don't.

I'm sorry to hear you had a very "un" magical stay at the Poly Concierge.

I haven't stayed Concierge in WDW, but i'd expect for the money you're paying to have a little nicer time.

I wonder if the new thing is to just put out X bottles of wine and Y plates of cheese and then forget about it. I often think 50% of the reason people stay on the Concierge level are because of the snacks and wine they provide.

Granted, you always have the glutons there who think of the "snack" as a meal and leave none for the rest. That is not the fault of the Poly, just people being cheap and rude.

The leaving dirty plates around has me confused though...i'd really think you'd clean up your own tables, but again, if you used to use fine china I guess they'd have a waitress around.

I'm sorry you didn't have a nice stay. It sounds like you didn't get what you paid extra for. We were also disappointed that Tahiti was chosen to replace Hawaii this year because we wanted Tahiti when we booked a lagoon view room this past winter and when we found out we couldn't get it we switched to garden view. We love the Tahiti location near the TTC and the beautiful beach right out the door. The view of the castle and space mountain are magical. However, if you are a fan of concierge and you pay extra for the service, Disney should meet their obligations to provide that no matter what the location.

Im sorry your stay was not very magical!:(
I felt the same way as you (that the hotel felt like a beach hotel that should be about 50.00 anight) But The only difference was I was in th Hawaii bld.

Hillbeans,
thanks for your reply. I didn't think the guests were being glutons (of course, there are always a few!). Rather, it seemed like the management hadn't taken into account the extra rooms in the Tahiti bldg vice the Hawaii bldg. The extra guests were a real strain on the resources -- including the food and staff! I didn't see anyone taking excess food or drink ... it's just that there wasn't enough to begin with.

About the cleaning up after oneself. At the old bldg (and at a visit this year to Animal Kindgom concierge during this same stay this year) the staff is there acting something like the servers in a restaurant. For example, at breakfast I might bring a bowl of cereal along with my coffee and a danish to my table. After finishing the cereal I push the bowl aside to drink coffee and before I know it the staff is there taking the cereal bowl away and asking if "everything is okay." It happens so naturally and quickly ... during my first visit to concierge several years ago I found this slightly uncomfortable ... but soon grew to love it and look forward to it as one of the "bennies" of concierge service -- being pampered. All this was missing this trip to the poly concierge. I'm still feeling really sad about this trip.

Paper plates and styrofoam cups.. icky-poo! That sure takes the deluxe and pampered feeling out of your holiday.

It was really stupid of the Poly to overcrowd Tahiti with concierge guests - they should have just shut down concierge for a few months and not take any bookings for it. Tahiti would have been full of regular guests and anyone "really" needing concierge could have stayed elsewhere.

I would be HUGELY disappointed to find paper plates, long lines and insufficient quanities of food & beverages while in concierge... I hope you are writing about your experiences at Poly to WDW.

How was the pool, parks, transportation by the way? Did you have a nice vacation and good weather?

Welcome home,

>>^..^<<

I have to agree. I too am hesitant to say anything negative about the Polynesian, due to the overwhelming number of true Fans. It was nice, but I have to stop there. My husband and I where talking about our stay this weekend and came to the conclusion that we feel that most of the "disappointments" are due to cut backs. We noticed more plastic than glass, less selection, less replenishing of items (no matter how quickly they ran out) and just much less compaired to years past. We also had an feeling of burdening the castmembers with our questions or requests for things, since they where being pulled in several direction. I guess if I wanted to serve myself I would have stayed in a regular room and just went to Capt. Jack's when I needed something. It's hopefully not something they are going to continue practicing and maybe they will be back to normal by next year. I know this year has been a terrible year for many big Companies and I would rather them do what they have to do to not lay off more people, but they don't need to raise any more prices for rooms on any level and expect us to "Make Do" with whatever they give us. Just our 2 cents.

Wendi

Hi Wendi,

I'm glad to hear that I'm not alone in my disappointed feeling (well, actually, I wish neither of us were disappointed!). I don't think we are the only ones either. We overheard our the guests on the balcony next to ours complaining to one another about not being pleased.

I do know I stayed at the Animal Kingdom Lodge concierge for two days prior to Poly this trip ... and there were NO cut backs there. It was a wonderful stay at AKL and everything I expected. Wonderful service, plenty of food, and very clean and superb!

I think the problems were limited to the Poly concierge b/c of the change in bldg. I agree they should have chosen to either close concierge completely or make more manageable arrangements.

Someone asked about the parks, pool, etc. I found the parks to be as usual for July ... not too crowded at all ... there was plenty of room at the pool ... and the weather was tolerable. We had a late afternoon/early evening storm every single day ... but we managed to work around them.

Sorry to hear the concierge service wasn't up to standards. Please write to the resort and let them know! I have never stayed concierge....but plan to someday...and would probably do it at the Polynesian (or AKL). But I certainly will keep an eye on reports such as this one before making the reservation! There really isn't an excuse for charging you the same (or more) as you previously were charged and giving you inferior service. I would think the whole point of staying concierge is to be pampered and given the best of everything.

Then again, we've been seeing cutbacks all over WDW...and they don't seem to care whether or not they're cutting back on things that repeat guests have come to expect. I sincerely hope these are only temporary changes and that the standard for concierge service at WDW hasn't been dropped this much.

We saw several people take whole bottles of wine with them out of the lounge. I wonder how much they can take into account for that type of thing, it seems to me there comes a point when you have to cut things off.

I have to agree with you about the plates, overcrowding, and things running out. But, our room, the view(LV), the elevators, and the doors were all fine. As far as smoke goes it would only take a little smoke to make our stay turn ugly:(

I love AKL and so glad to hear your stay there was much better!!

You guys in concierge crack me up.:p

You know what concierge stands for:

CON Customers Into Extra Rates and Gouge Everyone!

Stop the wine (pun intended) and put your $$$ to value. Rush back to your resort so you don't miss out on the wine & cheese & little "crudités" (look in French/English dictionary. close to concierge).

Get real. Use your dollars to have a good meal in the park or for those little extra special times like Norway Bakery after the fireworks.

Mind you, I guess if it's important to post that you stay in concierge and that makes you feel happy then spend the bucks and keep giving profits to Disney so they can keep my rates down.

:jester:

Anyone who thinks booking Concierge is about "crudités" should definately NOT be staying there.

On behalf of the entire country of Canada I apologize for Chopper's uninformed and insulting post...

Oh wait... Chopper's from Quebec... never mind :p

>>^..^<<

Thank you for the post. We were thinking about staying at the POLY concierge over labor day but booked the GF concierge at the last minute.

Thanks >>^..^<< for apologizing for me on behalf of the rest of Canada. Figures someone from T.O would do that being from the center of all that is good, warm & fuzzy in Canada.

Where in T.O. are your from? Say hello to Mel for me.

Mel WHO?

ROFLMAO, I slay myself.

Glad you guys didn't call in the Army this year to shovel the streets. Saved the taxpayers a bundle of cash.

Nice website. A little nutty though.. LOL.

I should write a book about this thread. I'll title it "They call me Geppetto.."

No don't worry >>^..^<< I will "definately" (sic) not be staying concierge.

Cheers,

Chopper

What was that all about??

I don't think you would like concierge anyway if all you are looking for is wine and cheese.

threads like these are sad to hear. We stayed at the Polynesian Concierge for our honeymoon last year. It was WONDERFUL !!!
I honestly honestly believe that the concierge should have been discounted until it moved back to the Hawaii building.

I also agree that Concierge is getting really popular on the boards right now....but then so is the Polynesian. I have never read about soooo many people staying at the Poly in all the years on the boards. I will say that I think it has a lot to do with all the upgrades due to the resort closures (POFQ). I think a lot of people got to experience how great the Poly is and now they want to go back...:p

I have to agree ... as you can tell from my signature, the Polynesian is my all time favorite resort. We have stayed in garden view rooms, lagoon view and Concierge. I love them all.

We were at the Poly from 7/2 - 7/6 in a garden view in Samoa and had a great time. We then went on to OKW for 5 nights and then back to the Poly for 3 nights of Concierge at the end of our trip.

I was disappointed. I have to agree with the previous poster that the entry doors were not in good working order. A few times we had to wait outside until someone came from inside to activate the doors (for those that don't know, they are keycard activated) but they were consistently not working. My DH went to the Concierge desk and they had to reissue our keycards three times before they would work. Not a problem, we were there to have fun!

This is the first time that I saw the "wear and tear" of this resort. I was surprised that this is the building they relocated Concierge to as there are other longhouses in better shape. Our bathroom wallpaper was torn and peeling all up one wall.

Also, our rugs were extremely dirty. Having stayed in Samoa just a few days before, you could tell that that building has recently been rehabbed. But, unfortunately we were paying a lot more money and this room was in disrepair.

The staff could not have been more pleasant and were definitely overworked. I waited one time 45 minutes just to speak to a Marilyn at the Concierge desk. Unfortunately, they were dealing with people who were given wrong room assignments, rooms not ready when the computer said they were, etc.

I will definitely go to the Poly again, but for anyone who is staying Concierge in the near future, please do not think that this is the "norm" at the Poly.

Hi Chopper ~ I am North of Toronto and have a differnt Mayor (thank god) at least we are in agreement on that!

No Army last winter ~ it was not too bad ~ we don't get those big ice storms like you do.

What hotel at Disney do you stay in by the way? Sounds like you have a magical time even without crackers and dip.

>>^..^<<

>>^..^<<,

Stayed at many. WL, Cont, Poly, CSR, CBR. DL. CSR is our favorite. The southwest theme is a most welcome change from the solid rain we have in Ottawa in Dec/Jan.

Staying over New Year's at the Dolphin, haven't decided for the week after yet.

See you're heading off soon to Universal & Disney. Wish I was going with you. Get ready to get pampered at AKL.

We're heading off on a cruise 17 Dec to St.Maarten, Martinique & Barbados (Parents vacation), spending sometime at Grandpas in Daytona before checking in at the Dolphin on 29 Dec (Kids vacation).

I'll have to update my disney meal planner, since I last revised it in 2001. You can get a copy at wdwplanner.com.

Cheers,

Chopper
