Just back from NYC Inaugural cruise: info inside! UPDATE:*pics on my web site added*

Awesome info - Thanks for sharing it all!!!

I read somewhere here on another thread that the Magic's horns were upgraded, and it was playing all the tunes that the Dream class ships play, including New York New York... Can you confirm this for me please?

Thanks!!

One of the women in our cruise group said that the Magic played an MP3 clip of the horn from the Fantasy when it arrived into NY, and played "NY NY" then. But the Magic's horn still only plays "When you wish upon a star" It doesn't have the upgraded horn that can play other programmed songs like the Dream and Fantasy can...

I saw it. It was movie and old clips interspersed with songs/dancing from the theater cast- songs from his movies, songs from attractions and the theme parks, etc. It was not all a movie. With narration from the theater cast, it went thru walt's life adn acheivements and legacy in clips, song and dance

What did you think about it?? Were the songs from the older movies? Would kids that are 4, 7, & 9 be able to relate?
Thanks again! you guys have been amazing!

It was a good mix of old movies like Snow White and Jungle Book thru new ones like the Lion King.

They also did some of the Trolley Dancer costumes and songs like the Main St. USA song. They did bits of the Tiki Room song and Grim Grinning Ghosts as well. I think it was the hardest show for the kids to get into since there was a good chunk of narration at the beginning. I think your two oldest will be ok, the younger one may be bored.

Sounds like something that I would've really enjoyed! Maybe I'll be able to catch it on a future cruise.

NJGirl, it was great to meet you, and it was so much fun having our own wave pool! lol :sunny:

Thanks for the info on dinner on the WDW day (heck, thanks for ALL the information). Don't know why, but that has been one of things I've been wondering about the most. We are on the first bus out, so I don't know how long we will last, but it's nice to know we have the option of the buffet (as we already paid for it :thumbsup2) when we get back.

Do they still offer the Out and About activities for the kids?

I don't have the Navigator's in front of me right now, but I definitely saw the "Out and About" category in the listing of activities. :)

The Dream-class ships only have 1 horn...

A fog horn.

The musical "horns" are played from large speakers hidden inside the forward funnel.

The Magic-class ships have several tuned horns on the forward funnel that play the notes to WYWUAS and a fog horn.

We booked this on the last day of the cruise. We had inquired about it on the second to last day but were told that all of the post-cruise excursions had been cancelled due to lack of interest. We were told that they needed a minimum of 15 people to book it, in order to run it. I told them that we were a party of 4, and if other cruisers asked about it, that we'd be interested in any of the 3 NYC excursions, so they put us on a waiting list.

They called us on the last day to say that they had 8 other people interested, and asked which airport we were going to. I told them we were going to Newark, and apparently so were the other 8, so they opened the excursion afterall. One of the women from the Port Adventures desk joined us as well.

They delivered our excursion tickets, special luggage tags, and written instructions to our cabin on the last evening.

We were to meet in Sessions at 7:45am. Then we were taken off the ship separately and taken to the VIP section to claim our luggage. We were taken right through Customs and on to the bus. 13 of us, plus the driver, and the tour guide. This was nice, we had a big comfy touring bus all to ourselves. :)

At first it was very cloudy and rainy out as we boarded the bus. We made our way through midtown Manhattan and by the time we got to Central Park, the sun came out! :sunny:

Our excursion wasn't supposed to include a stop at Central Park but because we were running early and were a small group, we spent a little time there. It was really nice and made me miss my mom who grew up in Manhattan and always talked about Central Park.

From there we made our way to Rockefeller Plaza and we were dropped off and led inside where our tickets to the Observation Deck were ready for us. These tickets had been pre-purchased, because if we had just shown up without them, our return time would've been much later in the day. The tickets were sort of like having 'FastPass' tickets. lol

The view from the top of Rockefeller Center was magnificent. I was really surprised and impressed at just how awesome the view was from up there. We climbed a flight of stairs to the top-most section of the roof. The weather could not have been more beautiful, and there was a nice breeze blowing too. I could've stayed there for a long time, looking at the views. That high up, NYC seemed actually peaceful. You could clearly see the Statue of Liberty from there, as well as the Empire State Building, and the building of the new World Trade Center towers.

After that we went to Grand Central Terminal where the tour guide told us the history of the beautiful historic building. Then we went down a level to where there was a food court type of area and we had about 25 minutes to grab a bite to eat if we wanted.

All during the bus rides the tour guide was pointing out different buildings and spots of interest.

After Grand Central Station we headed for Newark Airport and we were dropped off right in front of our airline check-in area.

The driver got our luggage out from under the bus, and off we went. That was the official end to our cruise.

Something I just thought of: Guest Services said that they aren't able to offer airline check-in like they do when sailing out of Port Canaveral. Whether this is something that they'll work out for the next NYC cruises or not, I don't know. Since we were going on the bus tour anyway, it really didn't matter to us. In fact, I liked knowing that we had our luggage with us, until we checked it in at the airport.

It cost $129 per person (adult price), and while it wasn't cheap, it ended up to be a really nice way to end our trip, and to spend time waiting for our flight that wasn't until 5:30pm that day.

Any questions, just ask and I'll do my best to answer. :)

I'm glad to hear you were able to take the post cruise tour and that you enjoied it. We are hoping to do so as well as our flight out isn't until 4:30 or so. The planner in me hates that I can't plan if it will go or not though.

I really need to make a backup plan if necessary.

Thanks so much for posting these. This is great information!

If you get time, I'm interested in which characters were listed as doing meet and greets.

Off the top of my head there were:
Mickey
Minnie
Donald
Daisy
Goofy
Pluto
Chip & Dale
Peter Pan
Alice
White Rabbit
Queen of Hearts
Captain Hook
Smee
Jack Sparrow
Stitch
Pinnochio
Jimminy Cricket
Aurora
Cinderella
Snow White
Belle
Tiana

Lilo and Max were there too, but only on the Port Canaveral Day when most people were in Orlando.

Terry, thanks for all the great info! Sounds like you had a great trip!

Thanks. I had all of those on my list so looks like we are doing good so far.

I've read they have changed tipping so that now it is automatically charged to your account. Was this the case on the Magic or do we still have to go stand in line to add tips?

Yes, this was the case. You only had to stand in line if you wanted to change the amount of the tips charged to your room.

Thank you for the info! Our cruise documents don't mention this at all. They still have the standard tipping wording they've had for years. One less thing to worry about while aboard.

They do add the tips to your account, but the difference that I noticed was that I had read that they were going to charge our accounts on the first day of the cruise, but they didn't show up on our accounts until about halfway through the cruise.

I like the fact that they still deliver the tip envelopes along with the tip coupons/vouchers to your cabin so that you can add an extra tip (if you so desire to do so), and then present your tips personally to your servers/cabin host.

Interesting story regarding tipping on our cruise:

While swimming in the adult pool one day (I think it was the second to last day of the cruise) I started chatting with a gentleman who has cruised before on other cruise lines but was on his first Disney cruise. He told me that he was going to go to Guest Services to have his tips reduced or removed, and I quote, "because we've been tipping all along so far. And our food was never served hot, so we've been going to Palo almost every night. I didn't know that we were going to be tipping at the end of the cruise. I'm going to have them remove my tips from my account".

I just let him talk, but I felt like saying to him "You've cruised many times before, and now you're saying that you didn't realize that you'd be tipping at the end of the cruise??". I know for sure that he has cruised before and wasn't just making that part up because we discussed Royal Caribbean at length and he definitely knew a lot about their ships and cruising in general.

Oh well. That's people for ya! :upsidedow

If you go to the Port Adventures desk and they say that they don't have any interest to run the excursions, ask them to start a waitlist. It seems that all of us who went on the excursion didn't really ask about them until the last couple of days before the cruise. I know that they were telling people that they were cancelled because they told the man in front of me that, and he just said "oh ok" and walked away. It wasn't until I spoke to them that they started the wait list.

Also, I told them that we'd be open to do *any* of the 3 NYC excursions because honestly it didn't matter to us which tour we went on. In the end, we had a really nice time and it killed a few hours for us. And it was a very nice way to debark the ship on that last morning.

If you go to the Port Adventures section of the DCL web site, choose New York City and it will list the different excursions. There are 3 different tours offered, and 2 Disney Broadway musical excursions, but I think those 2 had to be arranged for before the cruise.
