We just got back last night from once again (third year in a row) a wonderful stay at HH. We were there from 3/14 to 3/19. We checked in early Sunday morning (before 9am) and they offered us a villa that was ready, but was not marsh view, which we requested. They said if we waited we had a better chance (no guarantee) of a marsh view. We decided to wait and we were glad we did! We had villa 3121 -- the end building that faces the marsh. What a view! We have been lucky, our requests all three years has been non-smoking, marsh view, top floor. We have gotten all our requests all the years.

First, the weather. We were concerned that since we were going in March this year rather than April our previous two trips we would not have the great weather that we enjoyed the previous trips. Were we wrong! The HH gods continue to smile down on us, in 3 trips we have never had a day of rain. This year we were supposed to have some rain on Monday, and what sounded like a total washout on Tuesday. There was some rain overnight Monday, and that was it. It was cloudy all day Tuesday, we spent the day in Savannah, but we had no rain there. The temperatures while we were there were in the 70's, and I believe on Monday and Friday they may have even been in the low 80s.

We rented bikes right away. They got new bikes about 2 months ago. The price is the same for DVC members, $25 for each of the firsts two bikes, $10 for each additional. The new bikes are nice, similar to the old ones. We rode over to the beach house for lunch. Surfman's station is not open yet, nor was there anyone yet renting the chairs or banana peel bikes on the beach.

We did some of the activities, and as usual they are all well done. Some of the things we did was the Pinckney Island Walk (the new naturalist Chris is very good), campfires, shadow's doghouse, Gyotaku, rainbow scavenger hunt, Shadow's tales, DD did kids night out to the movies, creative beginnings with Chef Gordon. We also spent a lot of time at the pool, beach house, biking, and twice played tennis at Palmetto Dunes.

Even though they said the resort was at capacity and would be for the next six weeks, it never seems crowded. In fact the week we normally go is the MCI golf week at Harbor Town, and this week the island overall seemed like a lot less people.

We did as I mentioned spend one day at Savannah. We always plan on it, but never have seemed to make it, but this year we did. It was the day before St. Patrick's day, and the town was very geared up for the holiday. We did our own walking tour, we got a guide book at the visitor's center. Very nice city with beautiful squares and buildings. I had ahead of time made reservations at Lady and Son's for lunch. We had the buffet lunch, it was so good. We were stuffed after that. One of the "Sons" was there, coming around to check that everything was OK. Right after that Lady (Paula Deen -- she has here own cooking show on the Food Network) was there. That was an extra treat for me -- I got her cookbook that I bought there autographed and had my picture taken with her. She was very friendly to talk to.

Other places we ate were the Hilton Head Brewing Co.(food, especially the wings were very good, the place itself is basically a bar), Just Pasta (went there last year too, excellent fresh pasta and sauces -- followed by dessert at Rita's Ices), San Miguel (DS really likes it there, we had just done Chef Gordon's appetizer class and were not too hungry, so we let him pick), and as our final meal on our way out Captain's Seafood for lunch on Friday. Captains is very, very casual, but they have great seafood, we eat there every trip.

A Private Affair -- Our favorite part of the trip! This is the third time we have done it, and it is fabulous. It was DH's birthday on Monday, so we did it on that night. It just gets better and better! The food is unbelievably good, and Chef Gordon is so personable, it just makes for a great evening. Our appetizer was carrots that were grated into almost like a fettucini shape, and they were cooked in a cream ginger sauce, topped with shrimp. I do not know how he comes up with these combinations, but boy do they work. For the main course we had filet mingnon, and a crabcake. We had the crabcakes the first time, and they are so delicious we decided to have them again this time. Also there were string beans (one of my favorites) and rice pilaf. Lot's of food. My husband requested for his birthday desert "something with caramel", and what a treat we had with that! He made us a caramel fondue that was out of this world. Lots of fruit and cake to dip in. We asked our three kids what their favorite food was the whole trip and they all responded the caramel fondue. We loved the entire meal. Can't wait for next year!

We also did on Thursday night one of his cooking events, which we never had an opportunity to do in the past. Again, what a treat. Gordon serves wine, and then gives a presentation preparing an appetizer. He made a mashed sweet potato topped with a cream sauce with andouille sausage, topped with cajun shrimp. Where does he get his ideas? Again, wonderful food. As you can tell, we are Chef Gordon fans.

On a final note, as usual the CMs at HH are the best! They work so hard and are so friendly and enthusiastic. I do not want to mention any names for fear that I leave someone out, but they are the nicest group of people. They really add to the whole vacation experience.

I'd be happy to answer any questions!

Thanks for the trip report! Sounds like you all had a wonderful time. I am itching to go (only 2 weeks) and your report really made we want to leave NOW!

Thanks!

Thanks for the great trip report! We also love HHI, for DH he actually prefers it to WDW. And we're big Chef Gordon fans also. We haven't yet done the private affair, but plan to next trip. In the 3 years, what are some of the foods you've had? Do you come up with the ideas, or does he? And for March, how far ahead did you book it?
You allowed me to return to HH in my mind, thanks!

Thanks for the report on HH. We will be there in just 12 days -- not that we're excited about it or anything. ;)

Your report also reminded me that we have to start thinking about our menu for A Private Affair. So many choices and they are all winners!!

We're crossing our fingers for great weather again this year. Last year, were were there during "THAT" week in April when it was unseasonably cold and rainy. We love HH no matter what the weather, but I am definitely in the mood for some pool time!

Thanks for the trip report! We'll be there on April 4th and we can't wait to get there!

Thanks for the report! We hope to visit HH for the first time in November. You mentioned a marsh view but what are the different views available?

Thanks so much!

PJ

Thanks for the great detailed report! HH will have to be added to my list of DVC resorts to stay at some day.:sunny:

We are going to HH for the first time in August. We would love to do a cooking class. Is that something that you have to sign up for in advance? Sounds like you had a great trip

Simba's Mom -- some of the things we've had the three times are filet mingnon, crabcakes, another shrimp appetizer last year, bananas foster, and a chocolate pot de creme last year that was to die for! We cannot remember what our main course was last year. I think it may have been a seafood stuffed fish. Everything is first rate. If you have not had the crabcakes, that would be the number one thing not to miss out on. We kind of work with him on the menu, but we are very easygoing and flexible. It is good to be open-minded. My DH and I are not huge carrot fans, but after that appetizer of the carrots and shrimp I cannot wait to try to make it myself.

Poohj80 -- the views can be marsh, pool, or an interior view that looks in on the resort. I think that one building at the end next to us actually looks out on where the boats come in and out of the marina. You cannot go wrong with any of them.

Halle -- we just signed up for the "creative beginnings" event when we got there. You do not need to sign up ahead of time. The class was more of a demonstation, social rather than a traditional cooking class where you actually cook yourself. It was very enjoyable, very casual.

Wow! Thanks for a great HH report!! We went for the first time last summer and fell in love with it. We are trying to figure out when we can get back down there. We just had such an incredible vacation, we are not beach people and found so much to do at the resort. Our son loved the pool. We said we wanted to go to Savannah, but never made it. We were just enjoying the resort so much.

Thanks again!

Thanks again! I was thinking there might be an ocean view but guess not.

I have a question-- what did your kids do while you went to creative beginnings? That sounds like an adults only type of thing...
Also, I was under the impression that a Private Affair was a "couples" type of dinner, but it sounds like your whole family has enjoyed it.
Thanks so much for the great report! I love HH!::yes::

Thanks for the great review! I am looking forward to going to HH in the next couple of years with my DH and two kiddos. I didn't know Paula owned the Lady and the Sons. I had walked by it when DH and I were in Savannah years ago. I love Paula too! That is terrific you got to meet her. We will definetly go there, how long does it take to get there from HH?

JPmom97 -- It takes a little under an hour to get to Savannah. I did not know that Paula (Lady) had a cooking show until we got there. In fact, they were filming some of the customers at Lady and Sons for the Food Network while we were there.

BWV Denise -- The creative beginnings definitely is more of an adults only event. I was going to go solo, and my husband was going to stay with the kids 13, 10, 7. DD (7) informed us that she wanted to go to the kids night out at the movies that night, so we signed her up. The DSs (13 & 10) did not want to go to the movies, so they came over to the beach house and while we were at the event they played ping pong, foosball, and watched the NCAA tournament. They were out of sight during the entire event. For a private affair, we let them pick out Lunchables at Piggly Wiggly (a rare treat for them). (We always kid Chef Gordon that we are going to take his picture with the luncheables and blackmail him with it!) Chef Gordon always sets up their own table to the side, and they eat and then play at the beach house (no swimming though). They pop in on us once in a while, and certainly always return for desert! When DD was younger we brought a special sticker activity book for her that we pulled out at the last minute, and it kept her occupied while we ate. It is very casual there -- you can include your children with the meal, Chef Gordon is very flexible.

Great report!

We'll be there in just 7 days - for the first time in about 3 years!

... Can't wait!

How fun. This may be the one way that I finally convince hubby to a short trip to HH. He has no interest in going to HH other than stopping on the way to WDW.

We tivo Paula's show each weekend and I love her food and her personality. I would love to eat at her place and have the chance to meet her.

Thanks for taking the time to do your nice report.

Thanks for all the info on HH. We are heading there for our first trip on April 4th. My wife, daughter (21 months old) and I (new DVC members at SSR) along with my in-laws (DVC members at OKW). I just had a couple questions for the more experienced HH'ers:

1) about how much is this "private affairs" dinner? Our daughter is really good at restaurants, etc, even fancy ones. Most people remark at how well behaved she is. Also, my wife is not a seafood eater. Will she still enjoy the meal?

2) does anyone have any recommendations about golf courses in the area? The couple that I have looked at want about $100 per round, which for a hacker like me is pretty steep.

3) is there good shopping on HH or should we go to Savannah?

I think that's enough (for know). i just found this site. It is GREAT!

According to Chef Gordon's info, it's $150 for the first two people and $50 per person after that. We just booked for November.

I can help a little with golf courses. DH has played 3, (so far, he reminds me)-Shippyard, Harbortown golf links, and Indigo Run. Best (so far) was Shipyard. He won't return to Indigo Run-terrible experience and he didn't like the way the course was. May have been a bad day, but with so many other courses, why go back. Matt, the resident "golf expert", who works the front desk, recommended the Arthur Hills course at Palmetto Dunes (across the street) and the Robert Trent Jones course (also there). DH is planning to play those 2 next time we go (probably next February). Rates seem a little cheaper if you reserve through the resort rather than directly with the course. And double check the rates for when you're going-rates are significantly different at different times of year.

We'll be at HH the same time as you -- at least part of it. We arrive on Friday 4/02 and leave on Wednesday 4/07.

* A Private Affair is $150 for up to 3 people or $50 per person for groups of 4 or more. Your daughter should be fine, since it truly is a PRIVATE Affair and the only people there will be yourselves and Chef Gordon. You can email Gordon at ChefLCC@cs.com to check on availability and for menus. He has a great variety of menu items to choose from, both seafood and non-seafood. Everyone can pick and choose what they want; it doesn't have to be the same for everyone.

* My husband and son particularly like Indigo Run and the golf courses at Palmetto Dunes. No, they're not inexpensive, but they are nice! There are also some courses in Bluffton (between I-95 and Hilton Head Island) that tend to be a little less expensive.

* OMG, is there good shopping in Hilton Head! There are the outlets in Bluffton (which can take a whole day) plus tons of great little stores/strip malls on HHI itself. We have probably been to DHHIR about 20 times, and have yet to drag ourselves to Savannah, Beaufort, or Charleston for a day trip, although we keep meaning to...

Hope this helps. Maybe we'll see you there! (We're in the Atlanta area, too, BTW).
