Just back from Hawaii - Bring on the DVC!!

Who's going to be buying DVC in Hawaii?? - We are!!! Just got back from a Hawaiian cruise, and totally fell in love! I don't care that it takes us 2 flights and 9 hours to get there...it will be totally worth it. The prospect of spending (at least) a week in Hawaii every year is so exciting to us! We can't wait for the DVC members cruise to sign on the dotted line! (keeping fingers crossed that they will be selling Hawaii by then!)

That is awesome that you enjoyed Hawaii so much. I hope to visit Hawaii someday as well. I probably won't buy the DVC in Hawaii just because we won't travel there every year or even every 5 years.

Well, we did spend more than a couple of hours in each port...we spent a couple of days in each port. And we are well travelled and know what we like and what we don't. One person's idea of "that much money on a timeshare" and another's idea of " a good investment in our future vacations" is obviously different. I guess it depends on each familiy's situation, but for our family, we see it as an exciting addition to the DVC family and we are excited about it.

The reason I initially posted was because there seems to be a strong feeling that most current members won't be buying in at DVC Hawaii. We too were on the fence, but after falling in love with this beautiful part of the U.S., we were 100% convinced that it was for us. Perhaps the initial sales for Hawaii will be slower, but maybe once current members "try out" their existing points there, they too may fall in love and decide to buy in there. Personally, we think it is an excellent alternative to WDW or DL without having to trade out points. Also, I am sure the marketing will be really predominant in Japan and Asia, as it seemed that the majority of tourists in Hawaii were from there.

Yes, being from Mass the flight time and expense getting there is enough to take all the fun out of that trip for me. I've agreed to go with DW on one of those cruises that leaves from the west coast and bangs around the islands for a couple of weeks or when my good friend who was born in Maui goes home for a visit but thats it.

You need to look at NCL's Pride of America. You spend several days each on Maui, Kauai and the Big Island. We took this cruise 3 years ago and it was fantastic.

As far as DVC - we hope to stay there some day on points, but we wouldn't buy any points there. Just too far.

DH and I also love Hawaii. I totally understand the OP's enthusiasm. It is a long flight from Minnesota and neither DH nor I likes being in a plane that long. The last few times we have flown first class to make it more bearable, but it is the single issue that keeps us from visiting more often.
That said, Hawaii is idyllic for us. The one problem I have with DVC Hawaii is that it is on Oahu. We much prefer Maui, Big Island and Kauai. If the Hawaii DVC were in a spot to do whale watching Jan. - March, I think we would be buying. I may change my mind if we ever stay there (we haven't stayed on that part of Oahu before). It is wonderful that Hawaii will be a DVC option someday, hopefully.

My wife has always wanted to go to Hawaii.. I promised her long ago that someday we would.. I'm hoping within the next few years to make that promise come true... Thank you, DVC!!!

We don't mind the 12 hr + flights from the east coast so much if we break it up somewhere after about 4-5 hours (we usually fly thru Dallas or Salt Lake City). We also prefer the other islands to Oahu - but I am hoping that this resort will be pretty self contained with lots to do on the property. If that's the case we might spend 4 or 5 nights there before moving on to Maui. I am also now thinking that what we will do is stop for 2 or 3 nights in CA & spend some time at VGC / DL. THAT would really break up the trip at least GOING.

Now all that remains to be seen is how steep the point requirements will be...

Oh I want to add on at Hawaii too!!! We live in the freezen weather of Niagara Falls, one Hawaii vacation every 3 years or so would be great; beside, we can always use the points at any DVC resorts. Somebody has to buy points at Hawaii DVC so why not us? I love my Disney vacations, I am not that type of people who only wants WDW vacations. I like the Disney quality, I wish they build more DVCs everywhere around the world so I can visit them all.

BTW, kjd469, did you take any pictures of the current status of construction??

I anticipate buying points for Hawaii. I love WDW, but sometimes you just want to get away from that. Never been on Oahu, but LOVE Maui. The resort pictures look fabulous though! My kids are little now, but I can see going there alone when they are grown and on their own. What is better than relaxing on the beach reading a good book? Everyone has their own view on how to best use points, to each their own!

I personally like the location and island they are building on. It is secluded, so you can have total piece and quiet. It is also close enough to plenty of things to see and do if you want excitement. Perfect choice.

Honestly, I think Hawaii deserves more than the one night stand approach you get from a cruise ship. We love cruising but each island has its own personality and having been there several times I could not settle for just one day on any one island. JMO...not to mention the poor value you get for your points on DCL. (And yes, we've done it before but won't make that mistake again.)

Three years ago my DH and I stayed at the JW Marriot Resort right next to where the DVC is being built. It was so peaceful and beautiful! I didn't care for Oahu's "tourist" parts (Waikiki) but loved where this resort was and enjoyed other parts of the island such as Pearl Harbor, Turtle Bay resort area, North shore area. We loved driving around and exploring the more remote parts of the island. We probably won't be buying there because the flight (12hour) is too much for us but do plan on staying there when it opens. Can't wait!

Funny because I have the opposite problem of most here. I live in Hawaii (Big Island) and when we did our first family visit in August of 2009, we decided to buy a DVC membership. Came down to Villas at Grand Californian or Animal Kingdom Villas. Deciding factor for us was the flight times to California or Florida. The wife and I decided that the boys were probably too young to take the long flight to Florida, the 5 hour flight to California is bad enough. Thus we went with the VGC.
