Just back from first stay at Poly

On my first visit to Maui we stayed in a two bedroom condo unit without AC. We were told the island breezes would keep us cool day or night. What a crock! It was hot, humid and swelteringly uncomfortable. Whenever we have a humid day, it takes me back. I hope the Poly gets this figured out before my stay!

I spent a few days at Moorea with a view facing Pago Pago. While I could hear the ferry horns it never bothered us. The hallways were very warm and the shower drained very slowly. The construction didn't bother me as much because I wasn't at the resort very long. If I was paying $500 a night it might be a different story. Personally I feel the Poly lost some of its charm but its still a great resort. I loved Trader Sam's but my biggest gripe is the issues with the monorail. IT was annoying that some mornings it was a delay to open and we had to wait 45 mins for a boat.

Yep, that's exactly what I'm talking about ... authentic experience. ;)

Must have felt CLOSE to the transportation center after a LONG DAY in the parks! NICE!:thumbsup2
On our very first trip to WDW in 1997, we stayed in Moorea on the third floor end room closest to the main building (is that palm tree still right outside the window?). It was extremely nice walking to the TTC to catch the monorail and walking from the TTC to get back to our hotel room.

We stayed at the Poly on our honeymoon 8 years ago. We loved the resort, gardens, CM's and (especially) the easy walk to the TTC. However I thought the actual room we stayed in was overpriced and "meh". The furnishings felt really dated to us. Not kitchy; old and worn.

I am very excited to return this coming November to see the rehabs and new DVC studios. They look lovely. We wouldn't pay the room rack (or discount) rate OOP but I'm happy to spend my DVC points to try it out. My goal is to stay at every WDW DVC resort at least once. So far we've only stayed at our home resort - SSR at WDW. We also stayed at the Hilton Head DVC and I was blown away by how awesome it was.

Up next: Poly!!

We just arrived back from a 3 night stay in Pago Pago and absolutely loved it! Being so close to the TTC was a perfect and the walk to the GCH was short and pretty. The large bathrooms were a big plus and made it easy when getting ready in the morning.

We had a one night stay room 3015 moorea lake view, last room, away from ferry. Our walk in shower did not drain. A lake view on the ground floor will be more of a bungalow view. Loved the deck and sliders. We thought the temp was comfortable. However, when you open the slider the thermostat knows it....the word "balcony" appears on the readout. I am assuming it shuts off if the slider is open.

The ferry horn blasted at 5:15 a.m. the horns on the smaller boats to magic kingdom did not bother us. It was fun to ride those boats.

There are two gas grills too.

Nice view of fireworks from 3 rd floor. And yes, whomever asked, the Palm tree is still there.

We felt the same way. We just got back Sunday. We had a standard room in Pago Pago, and while we loved the room, I didn't love the resort like I had hoped. We new there would be construction but Holy Cow, it was almost the whole resort. Our walk to the main building and pool seemed to take forever and our view of the parking lot stunk! The 2 showers was great but the big one had drainage issue and I absolutely hated that the thermostat only went down to 68. It felt muggy most nights and we were told they were manufactured that way so they could not be fixed to go to a lower temp. I would hate to be in there in the heat of the summer. I think when all the construction is done it will look nice, but its just not our favorite and like Beach Club and Bay lake tower better.
Ok 68 lowest:-(
Is this the only resort that had it this way??
They can usually override that.
68 lowest combined with shutting off with no motion equals uncomfortable sleeping for me for sure!!

We just spent a night at the Polynesian Villas this week in a Stnd View Studio (w/l never came through for a Lake view) and were assigned a 3rd floor villa in Moorea. I like it COOL and noticed right away when we came into the room in the heat of the day that it was not quite as cool as I like. Tried to turn down the thermostat only to find it would go no lower than 68. Having had this type of issue at other TS's and other DVC resorts I wasted no time asking Engineering to please come up as soon as possible.

It was semi-amusing that the engineer guy had an instruction sheet with him to follow as he adjusted the thermostat, stating, "these are new thermostats we have not had before". He quickly (MUCH to my chagrin!) informed me that 68 was as low as even he could get the thermostat to go. I wasn't very happy as I need it quite cool to sleep as I have some pretty serious insomnia issues. He DID however override the sensor that will shut the a/c off at night when you're sleeping (no movement in the room to tell the thermostat someone is in the room), so that the a/c would run all night. As it turned out, I was able to sleep pretty comfortably. The room did cool off pretty nicely set at 68.

So my advice for my fellow hot-blooded friends, is to call engineering to get them to override that nasty little "energy saving" feature that will turn off the a/c when you need it most! While you sleep!

Oh, and overall, we very much enjoyed our Studio. And I pretty much never stay in less than a 1 bdrm villa at DVC. Or our other TS on Maui for that matter. The rooms are very large and the huge split baths are terrific. I think the Poly Villas are a fab option for families that want/need to save points by staying in a smaller unit. The extra space along with the extra pull down bed makes for a much better than average situation for a family of 4 or 5.

Will Tokelea ( spelling?) house be completed by September? We are booked in a standard studio and def don't want Pago house.

I think Pago Pago would be fine as long as you're facing toward Moorea and not the parking lot. Togelau? I'm not sure when it's slated to be done, but it looks like the top 2 floors are about completed. 1st floor still has a long ways to go.

We just returned from a week stay at Morea in 3032. Breathtaking view of castle and fireworks. But it is loud!! Horns right on top of room from 6 am on to after midnight. Blowers and construction could be heard before 7. With several boats, you could hear the operator loud and clear even with the door closed. I missed a one bedroom terribly. We had a good time but won't be back.

Tokelau is scheduled to open in either June or July. While we were there, they finished pouring the concrete on the DVC side. Rooms on 2nd and 3rd floor in Tokelau looked completed at least the ones we could see into. IMHO, Tokelau will have some rooms with better lagoon views than some of the first floor Moorea lake view rooms. It is possible DVC classifies these Tokelau rooms as lake view and some Moorea first floor rooms as standard view.

One fear of Tokelau this year is the majority of Poly construction will be next to Tokelau. Side toward GCH.

Dizfan is right. I just heard from CM friends today that they are doing "test" stays the end of June for Tokelau longhouse, so they should be ready for "real" guests right after that! :sunny:

THANKS...wondering the same. Moorea or Tokelau might be a request for our October trip! EAGER to hear more as the months progress!

At Dizfan thanks for the update. That may be reason enough to keep my request at Moorea house.

We just returned from 3 nights in Pago Pago. We were in a room closest to the TTC, looking towards Moorea. We didn't hear the ferry at all, so for your standard view folks, perhaps this longhouse might be the one to request (though I was glad we looked towards Moorea and not the parking lot).

Overall, we really liked it, but still prefer our "home" at VGF, which we will likely continue to use our points at when we plan far enough out. A few things I wasn't a big fan of:

No ceiling fan and no overhead light. It was in the 90s when we were there, and the room just felt really stuffy without the ceiling fan going. We were searching for a black cord while we were in the room, and couldn't find it because it was also SO dark in the room, even during the daylight with the slider curtains completely open and even with all of the lights turned on.

We had the issue with the shower draining.

I still prefer the GFV split bathroom configuration. The extra sink is nice, yes, but it's kind of a pain to walk into the "kids" bathroom to do your business before you shower, and then walk back over to the "master" bath to shower. Also, the bathroom area is HUGE--I'd rather have more space in the sleeping area, but, well, what's done is done. There was still plenty of room for us to all sleep comfortably, and that's all I care about when we're staying at Disney.

The room also wasn't thoroughly cleaned--we found cheerios behind the table lamp and on the floor.

A few things I really liked:

The drawers under the bed were surprisingly roomy. Granted, we were only there for 3 nights (four outfits + swimsuits and PJs each for five people) and I packed summer clothing, so that takes up less space than jeans and sweatshirts), but I was able to store all of our clothes in both drawers and still have room left over. There was also plenty of space to store toiletries and other items in the bathroom. Loved all of the USB outlets and the fact that there is a table on both sides of the bed, too.

I really liked the location. We've only ever stayed in Hawaii at the Poly, and I was afraid I was going to find being so far away from the GCH and the pool a pain, especially because we were at the end of the building, but it wasn't. I appreciated that I felt like I had more options with boat/ferry and monorail transportation since we were pretty much equidistant from the TTC and the GCH.

I prefer the decor over the hotel rooms. Major improvement, IMO! (But still not as beautiful as the Grand. ;) )

The rehabbed common areas, we thought, were nice improvements. While I'm in the minority in this, I LOVE the new lobby. The old waterfall always reminded me of an aging mall, and you never had that great smell that you get when you enter a Disney lobby--instead, you were kind of hit in the nose with the smell of old water. (Not that the new lobby has a great smell--hopefully, they'll start pumping something in there at some point!) I also was not a fan of how closed off the lobby seemed beforehand. It's now brighter, airier and more welcoming, IMO. The kids splash pad is awesome--rivals Kidani--and we think is the best one on property. My teen and tween even wandered over and played over there (they have no interest in the one at Kidani, which is more geared towards younger kids). The new pool area with the expanded deck and more seating options was much appreciated--we didn't have any problems finding a lounger on a hot day. We couldn't go into Trader Sams since we had our kids with us, but we did sit on the Terrace one night and enjoyed a drink and the live music--great way to end the day. :)

Have heard that POOL GATE is operating and requires magic band! :thumbsup2 Most paying guests will be happy that pool area will be restricted and easier to get pool seating. :beach:

We just returned from 7 nights in Standard view studio 3rd floor moorea.

Our room wasn't clean when we checked in. There was hair and nail cuttings all over the floor of the 2nd bathroom and the living area had not been vacuumed as there was items like hair clips, dried cereal and wrappers on the carpet. I mentioned this to the front desk on the way out that evening and they didn't seem that bothered about it and just said that they would let their friends at housekeeping know.

On Wednesday Moorea and I believe the other DVC building lost power at around 10am - It was restored just after 5pm and the only contact from resort staff was a knock on the door to say that it should be restored by 1245pm. We had a dinner reservation at 6pm over at Magic Kingdom so at around 3.30pm I headed over to the front desk to ask when this was going to be restored and was told that it should be up and running very soon. It was very hot last week and with no power or air con it was impossible to get showered and iron clothes, in the end we used the torch on our phone to get ready as best as we could and headed out to enjoy dinner and some time in Magic Kingdom.

The front desk did agree that they could understand our frustrations and would be back in touch the next day to try and put it right, we never did hear anything back from them.

We were actually planning on adding on some Poly points while we were there but decided against it, we headed over to Saratoga on the Thursday to speak to our guide about another add on at VGF (we added on there last year but only half of what we needed as we thought we would split the additional points between VGF and PVB) but he said that it was completely sold out at the moment and they were not allowed to add anyone else to the waitlist.

Overall I do like the PVB studio and I hope the above issues are down to early day problems but for the moment its enough to put me off buying in there.
