Just back from DVC Magic NYC cruise any questions?

Like Bbn, I am looking at this post again to educate myself on the driving to the port and parking - seems like Magic returns back and docks in pier 90 correct? I feel like I want to do the U turn option and park directly into pier 90.

We booked Bermuda for 2018 too, can't wait for our HOTHS!!!

They will only let you park at the terminal if you are boarding the ship.

This is not always the case.....according to the official site of the Passenger Ship Terminal.

https://www.nycruise.com/manhattan-terminal/parking/

Parking Rates Effective January 2016
Daily Rate: Up to 10 Hours
(For drop offs/visitors) $35.00
Cruise Parking
1 to 10 nights $40.00/per night

It definitely says parking for drop offs and pick ups....it is actually a different price than for those cruising.

Thanks for all of this great info! We are sailing on the 10-14-2017!!! NYC Magic cruise - but my son is departing this weekend, 10-22-2016!!!

Besides being a bit jealous, I am the "chauffeur" for drop off and pick up! We are from NJ, and I'm not that familiar with NYC driving - so the info above is very helpful - thank you all!

My question is what about "PICK-UP" on disembarkation day? Any tips / info / time suggestions? Any/all info will be much appreciated!

You can't enter the terminal area for pick up. You'll have to pick him up across 12th Street. My parents met a driver there who basically double parked, called them and stood on the median waving his arms. It's really poorly thought out.

I pick up and drop off fairly often at the Manhattan cruise terminal and I have ALWAYS been able to pull into the terminal and pick up people. I am not the only one either. I pick them up on the same level and area where I drop them off (mid level). I am not saying some are told to pick up across the street but I have never been told to. I come down the West Side Highway, pull into the area and go up the ramp to the mid level and wait. Sometimes I am told to go around again but never told to pick up across the street.

We were dropped off and picked up last October by friends and they no issue either.

We are dropping family off this Sunday and I will try to take note if people are picking up in the terminal area.

There were two other ships in port when we disembarked and traffic was heavy. Many have posted on this forum and other forums that front door pick up isn't certain and you should plan on having to cross 12th Avenue for your car service, Uber, taxi, what have you. And that the porters are not allowed to take you across the street, but leave you at the curb. Maybe you get by because they think you are dropping off?

Not sure but I have never been stopped or even asked if I was picking up or dropping off. I have been there with other ships in port as well. All I can say is that was my experience on several occasions. I know there are many other cars picking up as well, not just me. I certainly don't want to mislead people in thinking they will be able to pick up but I have never been told to pick up across the street. Maybe just lucky.

I think on the street level they don't let you in or pick up but I am always up on the mid level roadway of the terminal. The street level is mostly for the buses and shuttles. Taxis and car are on mid level.

We've sailed from NY 5-6 times. Our driver has always dropped us off at the terminal and picked us up at the terminal. Last fall, I specifically noted how many taxis were sitting there available for passengers since a lot of people mentioned having to cross 12 Ave to get a taxi. There was a constant stream of them at the curb at the port - no need to cross the street. We have NEVER been required to cross 12th Ave. I think it is easiest for some car services, Ubers, taxis, etc. to have the passengers cross the road to them.

If there is an issue it is that everyone is trying to use the street level and that is not the appropriate pick-up spot for cars/taxis. On busy port days especially, that is for buses.

I want to add that you exit the terminal on street level so to get to mid-level you have to take the freight elevator (which is outside) up to the mid-level. Maybe people don't realize there are taxis waiting on the mid-level.

I remember distinctly we used a porter and hopped a cab (they were all lined up on mid level) to take us back to NY Penn Station. I'll check which elevator we used (outside or inside the terminal).

I agree, that the confusion may be if you exit on the ground level at the street, they won't allow you be picked up curbside since it's where the trucks/busses run. Why they don't direct you to use the freight elevator there and head up to midlevel for pax pickup and taxis is beyond me. Crossing 12th at street level is crazy.

Back again - so I looked at the schedule for cruises at the Manhattan port and it would appear that the norwegian breakaway is not in port when the Magic is there on both 9/27/17 and 10/2/2017 so hopefully I am safe to assume the Magic will be docking at Pier 88 on both days? If so I will try and park in Pier 88's parking lot

thanks again for this thread.... I have read the debarkation process is fine but the traffic going to the lincoln tunnel is rough, wondering if we should leave extra early due to traffic since we're driving home

We took the tunnel on our way home. It was a weekday (Also the first day of Comic Con at the Javits) and we disembarked around 9 am. I was shocked how quickly we got out of Manhattan. No lie, we were on the NJT in less than 15 minutes.

Not sure why anyone would park to pick up or drop off when you can do it on street level for free :confused3 I'd rather wait for my ride, or drive around the block before paying $35 for (what), an hour? In the meantime, I cannot imagine there is any parking available that early when most have not left the lot yet. Just wondering.

We have departed Manhattan on Saturdays, Sundays, and many weekdays (both arriving and departing) and have never had any traffic problems. When we are taking a cruise, we never arrive at the tunnel before 10 a.m., so we miss all the rush hour, and are always out of Manhattan in 15-20 minutes and on the NJT.

Good news for our 10/02/17 sailing. That's us. I think we may just park at terminal again. But hubby is more off penny pincher than me. He may want to park in his lot in Brooklyn and get a ride over. Too me its a hassle.

Hanscarlet. I see you are cruising both this year and next too out of NYC like us. We a on 10/24/18 Bermuda cruise too.

Depending where your coming from GWB is usuall way less traffic than the tunnels. You just come down the westside.

Happy cruising. I can not wait till October!!!!

Thanks! Yes we also booked the Bermuda 10/4 trip because we're expecting we're going to love the HOTHS trip and the ease of going to NYC vs air.... do you know/remember which pier parking lot you parked in? I am thinking it seems like Pier 88 is the one that seems to be where she docks the most.

I'll "See" you getting on as I get off this year :) Happy Sailing!

We cruised out of NYC in 2012. We just drove up and parked next to ship. I don't remember which Pier.

What does HOTHS? Thanks

When we sailed out on the Breakaway last October, we were beyond excited to see the Magic docked as we pulled into the parking lot. But once up on the Breakaway, the Magic looked so tiny (and inviting). Boy did I want to jump ship LOL. (we had a blast on the Breakaway -- but I like the smaller ships).

Can you post the link to see the cruise schedule out of Manhattan?

Halloween on The High Seas, we're eager to try our first themed cruise, hearing good things

I went back to and reviewed my photos as to where we exited the ship last year.

Everyone not using DCL transfers was exited directly outside on level 2 at Pier 90.

In this next photo you can see us coming out Level 2 curbside - exiting thru a set of doors right next to the terminal entrance doors (clear glass with silver frame where the guy with the red jacket and safety vest is standing).

At that point you would just make a quick u-turn to re-enter the terminal right thru that other set of doors. (same doors used for anyone cruising out that day) This is the main terminal entrance, where the inside elevators are that lead up to the parking lot on level 3 or down to street level 1:

Our porter made a left and walked us to the waiting cabs all conveniently lined up directly at Pier 90 on Level 2.

Everyone else waited to the right (between Piers 90 & 88) for curbside passenger pickup.

There were 3 ships in port that morning. 2 at Pier 88.

And the Magic at Pier 90.

Thanks. UGH, I see that there are four ships in port that day, but one is listed as a port of call. Might try to get to the parking lots a little earlier than our normal 11 a.m. arrival LOL

Great photos! Thanks for posting. When we left the NCL Breakaway, we exited through the doors in picture one, but with 3,200 passengers, it was the worst debarkation ever. One escalator and one elevator were working! We thought we were smartie pants by bringing our luggage off with us -- but then had to wait for the elevator anyway as it was too much to take down the escalator (especially with a brace on my foot). Really wish I had known about that second level taxi access. We went down to street level on our return to NYC from Quebec on HAL, and had to wait for almost an hour for our turn to get a taxi!

dumb question and I know the answer is yes but trying to get confirmation or experiences with the luggage claim and customs - is this port similar to port canaveral with going to pick up your luggage in the claims area and going through customs? More chaotic or smaller? Less chaotic?
