Just back from a trip to the Dark Side

So last weekend we took the kids to Orlando but decided to give Universal a try (although we did hit the MNSSHP Friday night - I am just not up for Universal's version). Without getting into everything, it made me appreciate Disney and all of its charms, FP+ and all, even more. However the Wizarding World of Harry Potter and Hogsmeade/Hogwarts are truly amazing. Talk about doing something right! You feel like you have stepped into the pages of the books. Something I found interesting though is that apparently J.K. Rowling is actively involved in both of these, so much so that she does not allow WWHP to participate in Universal's Halloween in anyway (although she did allow it to be open during it for the first time this year, but no connection between the two is to be made by the park according to various staffers I spoke too).

However, for the first time in my life I had a gate keeper try to kick me out of a park. When going through the turnstiles I let my DH of first go that he could get our stroller and I went through with our 3 young boys. I did my card and thumbprint first, then when my son stepped up the gatekeeper asked me for the ticket "associated" with him. I grabbed one of my tickets meant for a child and asked her to use it as I did not think it mattered since he was under 9 and any child's ticket would do - and this was said nicely, not in a mean or disagreeable manner. You would have thought I spit in her face as she was utterly outraged and told me I was wrong and needed to find his actual ticket. How exactly I was to determine which piece of paper was his was a mystery to me, but I never argued with her or said a cross word, I just flipped through my tickets, grabbed one and told her it was his. After I got all three of my children through I looked at her, smiled, and said (with sarcasm if I am being honest), "Thank you have a wonderful day!" She then started to yell at me telling me to stop and wait because she was calling security to have me escorted off of the property. I looked at her and said, "Let me get this straight, you want to kick me out because I said, 'Thank you have a wonderful day'?" She again told me to wait while she called security. During this exchange my 6 year old wandered off so I told her I was going to find him but indicated the area where I would be and told her to please have security come and find me because I would love to speak to them, and again told her "Thank you have a wonderful day." She was irate and continued to repeatedly yell at me to wait for security as I left to look for my son, and every time she did I met it with "Thank you have a wonderful day" (this time without sarcasm but with happiness in my voice).

Of course security never came and I solemnly affirm that is an accurate description of the entire event as I asked a friend who was with me to read over it to make sure I was not leaving anything out or slanting it. I never once raised my voice at her, cursed at her, or made a disparaging remark. I did say my thank you in a sarcastic manner the first time but after that I said it as pleasantly as I could because I just found the whole thing to be ludicrous. And the entire time I was thinking to myself, "This would never happen at WDW."

Sorry you had a negative experience with a gate employee at Universal. I agree that the front gate process there is a little more cumbersome than at Disney (I had trouble getting my ticket to scan and link my finger correctly) but I won't judge my whole experience of Universal on that one encounter.

We have been there a lot of times and while the front gate was a nightmare (apparently still is) the rest of the park is wonderful. It has more of an adult feel than WDW but I loved every inch of it. Agreeing with @2Gma, don't let one grumpy person be the way you judge US. It's just as amazing as WDW but for different reason.

I agree with the overall assessment of Universal. While I absolutely loved WWOHP and think it's spectacularly done, the rest of the park gets an "ehh" from me. The only other rides I really wanted to go on were the Simpsons ride which was too long of a wait and the pteranodon flyers...and they won't let you ride that one unless you have a kid with you.

Are children not finger scanned on first entry for multi-day tickets as well? (I honestly have no idea....we've never visited with Under-9's)

We are annual pass holders at Universal, and have never had a bad experience at the turnstiles. Of course, once we were all admitted entrance to the park, I wouldn't have bothered with the "thank you and have a wonderful day" comment. I would have just taken my family and embarked on our adventures.

Grumpy people can pop up anywhere, unfortunately. On the whole, we have encountered more "magical" team members at Universal than cast members at Disney. But both the good and bad can be found at both park families......its a downfall of hiring humans.

Sorry that happened to you, sounds like someone was off her rocker. I would write a letter about that.

I am going to write a letter, I just have not done it yet. And it did not color my experience at the park at all. I thought it was somewhat funny once I calmed down a bit. Universal was nice, overall, I just think WDW is better suited to my family. Understand, I have 3 boys under the age of 9 so having a more adult feel is not what we need. Also, my husband has Celiac's and WDW is just so amazing with their GF options (and vast array of restaurants) that is just makes more sense for us. Nothing against Universal at all.

No they are not scanned - WDW does not scan them either. I think it is a hassle to get them to place their finger correctly and remember which one they used.

Adding the sarcasm was, as evidenced, a bad idea You just never know what kind of loon you're dealing with, whether it's an employee, the person next to you, the guy in line behind you etc. It is NEVER worth potentially escalating a situation or person just for 2 seconds of self-satisfying smarm. Even I've had to curb my sarcastic nature (IRL)...I'm afraid of setting a lunatic off! That said, she was out of line and I;m sorry you had to deal with that.

On a related note, I never understood the us v. them mentality when it comes to WDW and universal. They're both great parks and I enjoy both of them for many reasons.

They used to scan them. I went in January 2012 with 3 kids ranging in age from 3-9 and we had to remember which ticket belonged to which kid and they had to scan at both Disney and Universal. At least that's my 4 year old memory.

I personally like Universal a bit more than Disney but they're both great. I and even my kids who are now 7, 9, and 13 love thrill rides and Universal has more of them in two parks than Disney probably has in 4 (though I haven't counted). That's not to say Disney isn't great, it's just a little different and we tend to prefer Universal just a bit more especially now that my 7 year old is over 48 inches and can get on most rides at Universal.

We're planning on coming back in January 2016 and will be doing both WDW and Universal. I couldn't see coming to Orlando for a week and not doing both of them.

Agreed. I know my kids have had to do the finger scan at Disney before.

I wonder if I am remember this correctly but I seem to remember on our one trip to Universal (ten plus years ago) the gate keeper hassled me about my signature not matching. Does this sound right?

Not matching what?

They do ask you to sign your tickets (well, at least APs...not sure about regular tickets) but they don't match the signature to anything.

Some way I had to sign twice and they didn't match. I do remember we ordered our tickets online and had to pick them up there. this was awhile back. I remember it was when the Pats and Eagles played in the Super Bowl.

What most people/families that have multiple paper sheet tickets seem to do is hand the whole thing over to the Gate TM (it's often stapled), and let them figure out which ticket goes to whom (or at least that's what it looks like to me).

Sorry that happened to you. They are pretty careful about who is using which ticket....we've gotten ours mixed up before (I used to carry them for everyone).

We just wrote our names on the tickets so that we knew whose was whose. And my kids had to do the finger scan but half the time it was messed up and after having us try a couple of times, they just let us go on through.
