We were at DL July 16, 17 and 18. It was amazing. On the 16th, a Sunday in July, we walked on many major rides. It was nuts! No and/or very short lines for Pirates, HH, Big Thunder, ToT, Space Mountain and Soarin. We were so lucky with short lines the whole trip! We could only imagine that the extreme heat was keeping people away.

Stayed at the Grand Californian -- lovely as always. Our second time getting the Downtown Disney view, which is very fairly priced given that you can see the DL fireworks quite clearly from those rooms! We have a toddler who just can't stay awake long enough to see the fireworks -- so great to be able to see them from the room instead. And given that the DD view is less than the park view, I highly recommend it.

Ate at the Vineyard Room, which I also strongly recommend -- lovely service, great food, awesome wine selection. Overall, simply wonderful. The heat was rather hard on our little one, so we could only go to the parks in the early morning and early evening, but we were still able to see everything!

My first time seeing Turtle Talk with Crush, which is very enjoyable. Also my first time seeing Monsters, Inc. (very simply, but very cute. The scene with the doors is great!) and my first time seeing the “new” Space Mountain (hard to believe, but they actually made it better!!) and the “new” Pirates (other than the Davy Jones effect, which was quite cool, I wasn’t terribly impressed with the changes – seems strange to look around this classic ride and see Johnny Depp!) I also really liked the Bedtime Stories on the TV at the hotel – a great touch which really relaxed our little one at the end of the day. But we were surprised to learn that DL still doesn’t have PhotoPass and doesn’t have character wake up calls at the Grand Californian. These both seem like poor choices by Disney management as they are much beloved at the parks in Florida.

Enjoyed reading your review ~ Thanx for sharing.

I was kind of surprised about the character wake up call thing because: 1) it's a fairly simple and inexpensive thing to offer; and 2) I really think it makes a little person's day, starts them out in the good mood, ready to have fun. It never occured to me that it wouldn't be offered -- I'm pretty sure that we even got a wake up call from Mickey on the cruise! :confused3

my four yr old would have loved to have Mickey say Good Morning. Oh well.

Thanks for writing a trip report. Nice to know what the parks are like right now, even though we aren't going for awhile.

WHAT ???! . . . no photopass or Mickey (& Stitch  ) wake up calls?!
I'm so glad that you warned me (really, I'm not being sarcastic) - I'd have been really surprised when I got there - now I'm prepared !! ( and looking forward to all the things DL DOES have to offer!) Guess I'll just have to practice my best 'Mickey' to wake DNeph up each morning - and I'll need to ask the CMs to take photos so that I can be in some, too. :smooth:
