Just back, Disney slipping a little?

Just back from a quick four day stay and I noticed there were a few subtle differences.

Now, this is my seventh tripp in 2 1/2 years, so I think I am on to something here.

We stayed at the ASMu and although we have never been to the world during September when the crowds were low, it seemed that there were not enough staff around at the parks or the resorts. We stayed there in March and did not notice the things we did this time. They were not as clean as usual, out side, and we were always looking for someone to help us. The staff that was there, all through the world, were either very friendly and helpful, or totally indifferent. That is what surprised me the most.

We had more than one incident where we asked for assistance and were told where to go to get help. Maybe it was just me, but every other time we went and asked for help, the staff went out of the way to help us find what we needed. Not as many smiles, and even a few sarcastic remarks about what Disney does not provide for it's staff members. Ouch!

We requested extra towels, a hair dryer and iron and received none of them. Did not complain, just managed without. We called four days ahead of our travel date and asked if two additional reservations (family members) rooms could be located as close to our room as possible and they said no problem. When we arrived they did not have record of our request, but did the best they could.

We were celebrating many birthdays, and my nephew's was on the day of check out. I am not disappointed in anything that was done or not done, wasn't expecting anything. I did ask the front desk as I was checking out if they could give him a photo of Mickey and they had it signed for him, it was real nice. No towel animals, no cute arrangement of stuffed animals. We were happy with the maid service overall though.

I noticed in the Magic Kingdom that the staff was low as well, maybe just the time of year. There were some rides that had acess covers left off and lights burnt out too. That was kind of strange.

On the Baoardwalk, the Flying Fish Cafe must be going through some sort of face lift. There were no signs or evidence of work going on, but there was something going on there, the front looked all torn up.

The bus service was hit or miss. Sometimes we waited for as little as 5 minutes, sometimes over 40. There was some sort of mix up at the Contemporary because of a marathon and some people waited over an hour. The staff busses were coming through regularly and the excuse for the service was that the roads were closed down to one lane and traffic was being delayed. One lady asked why were the Mears busses and Disney employee busses running regularly and not the hotel guest busses, no one knew and no one seems to care. She was one angry lady, and I did not blame her.

Overall we had a great trip, and had no major complaints. I am not sure if the things we noticed were because of the time of year, or because of cutbacks. In the past we have been either during July, March, May, or August.

Well, I would have called and requested my hairdryer and iron again. It is highly possible that the wrong room number got written down or something. (I say that since I was at a hotel recently where they kept trying to deliver me the "Iron" I requested when I made no such request!)

I didn't think the value resorts provided irons & hair dryers. They didn't when I was there last year.

They do if you request them. I brought my own but know of people who have requested them.

I believe Sam's post is about more than irons and hair dryers. I have to agree that there is a general decrease in the quality of some aspects of DW. It sounds like nitpicking to start rattling off a bunch of little incidents, so I won't do that. ;)
We have been visiting DW 3 or 4 times a year for over 15 years. Naturally, we've seen alot of changes. I remember that it was a great source of pride for Disney and for cast members that a guest could ask a cast member any question about "the world" and the CM would know the answer. It was like that! It's not like that anymore. :(
I have also noticed that the upkeep isn't quite as pristine as it used to be. I've seen more light bulbs burned out...paint peeling...invasive nuisance plants taking over in otherwise "landscaped" areas... Things like that.
As you can tell from my countdown clocks, it's not keeping us away. We still have magical vacations at Disney World. I can't seem to get enough of the place! Lately, I keep thinking "Maybe this trip the magic will be gone. It won't be as great as I imagine it's going to be. The "compulsion" will be gone!"
Of course, each Disney vacation is more wonderful than the one before. I don't know how it happens, but it happens!
As far as the cutbacks and other small disappointments go, I remain hopeful that the pendulum will start to swing back again soon. I think we've had some encouraging developments lately.

Happy Disney Days everyone!

I totally agree that service is off at Disney. We've been going multiple times over the past 5 years and it's pretty noticeable. While I don't like to complain, let's face it, a Disney vacation is expensive! Tickets, food, lodging, etc. Because of these prices, we expect more. It's also pretty obvious that folks are staying away because of the deep discounts. I have POR for $85 a night at Christmas - unheard of! Disney is a business, but they need to re-find the magical touch because there are many complaints on these boards these days from folks who had less than magical stays. Simply a fact these days.

We feel we are qualified to respond to this as well. The previous comments about feeling the magic at each trip will always (we hope) continue. But, for the sake of having some managers read this, we are offering our own two cents about what was missing on our trip last week.

It was hot and humind when we were there. Some stores and venues had noticeable differences in the amount of air conditioning which was operating. Usually when you walk into a store or building, the AC hits you right away with resounding relief. Last week, some places were stifling and quite uncomfortable.

Usually, litter is picked up right away, but small pieces of trash, popcorn, etc, were left on the ground for an inordinate period of time.

We saw many light bulbs burned out and a lot of decay on building edges, rooflines, etc. Lots of peeling paint was also obvious.

On the positive side, a lot of remodeling was being done and the castmembers seemed just a bit more upbeat this trip.

If I were the head of personnel, I would initiate a program to teach employees that the future of the company rests on how they present the company to guests. Very simple, but something Generation X can do to invest in their generation of service providers.

We went in January and in May and we both noticed some subtle and not so subtle differences.
Sometimes I think it is luck of the draw; other times...
One good thing about going the end of May, WDW was FULL of CM's for the summer. We saw LOTS of ears in training. And they were the smiliest of the bunch. ;)
There was some sort of mix up at the Contemporary because of a marathon and some people waited over an hour.
That is interesting. Wonder what was going on. The WDW marathon is in January. Even the prelude, Classic 10k isn't until October 13. And Disney decided not to provide transportation for the runners to the race afterall.

We have noticed that it seems to change from year to year. This summer (June), it seemed clean however the layers of paint on Main St. were kinda sad, as they used to always scrape the buildings before new paint was added to keep it new looking. I hope that Disney doesn't go the way of the failing airlines- when times are bad financially instead of catering to customers they cut back and make life miserable for the very people who can get them out of the mess! It would be as if a grocery store was in financial trouble and instead of luring customers into the store with nice treatment, they started charging to use the parking lot and shopping carts!! What sense would that make? Of course, it will take alot to keep me away from Disney, but lets hope they don't drive the customers away themselves.

For the record - I've just planned a trip for May and dying that it's not sooner - I love the place - but there is something that has been bothering me.

Has anyone else noticed that seem to care just a little bit less about keeping that magical feeling at the park? - which used to be, I admit, over-the-top wonderful.

This is what I mean - I hate seeing less people in the costumes of the whatever land you're in and more people in suits or very nondescript uniforms. And when they are closing down at night it was nothing but Disney music to coax you out of the park - now, well, it might be playing, but you can hardly hear it over those huge street cleaners that can't seem to wait to start roaring. And I really think they've taken some of the personality out of some of the streets with all those gift shops carrying the same stuff...

Like I said, we still have fun - I just miss some of the old magic touches.

Hayley, your comment on the street cleaners was right on with our experience. We tried to have a magical moment in front of the castle by the Walt statue but were drowned out by those machines! Also, I caught two CM's in an off guarded moment at the info desk under the train station in MK. It was deserted there and I approached to ask a ?, they were expressing their opinions on tourists who keep askingthe same dumb ?'s. As soon as they saw me they put on their smile and I said "Well I've got one of those dumb ?'s for you too" THey were so embarrased and apologetic!;)

Overall, we had a very good experience on our trip and CM's were pleasant and helpful. Actually we thought the grounds looked nice and the parks were clean in Feb.

My DD is working at MK this semester on the college program and from the posts on some of the college program sites it sounds like they have made several changes in the training programs. I think they used to have "traditions" classes for 2 or 3 days and now it is just 1 day so that may have something to do with CM's not being able to answer questions.

we were there Sunday too (the 29th of Sept) & there WAS a race, a triathilon (probably spelled wrong) in fact the busses for all the resorts took you to the Ticket & Transportation center instead of directly to the Magic Kingdom if you took the busses in the morning. When we left in the afternoon, busses were running at the Magic Kingdom again. We saw athletes running near the TTC with CM's cheering them on, lots of cups & sponges thrown on the ground & when we were on the monorail we rode by a parking lot FULL of cars with bike racks on the top of them. Supposedly some sort of race for a total of I think 27 miles.
