Just as a reminder, the players are:
Me - Brad, loves to eat and drink but gets full way too fast
DW - Lisa, short & skinny but can eat me under the table
Our stay:
10/24 - 11/4 @ POR
Day 5 (10/28):
Well, unfortunately, as the alarm went off at 6:30am (so we could get up early and make our 8:00 PS for Donald's Breakfastosaurus), I was in no condition to move. Yes, I was still feeling the effects of the prior night's Signature Dinner. Ugh.
Thankfully, Lisa let me sleep in a bit, eventually dragging my bum out around 8:00 or so. So we headed on over to AK anyway. We grabbed a quick snack (hot chocolate to settle my tummy and a soft pretzel to tide Lisa over until lunch). Once again, no wait whatsoever for any attraction. By about 11:30 I was finally feeling ready to eat, so we stopped for:
Lunch at Tusker House Restaurant -
For Lisa - Turkey Wrap sandwich with cup of corn chowder & Diet Coke
For Me - Veggie Sandwich with fresh fruit and iced tea
This was an okay lunch. Definitely healthier than most other counter service. Lisa's soup was pretty good. She didn't really care for her sandwich; I thought both were okay. I was disappointed that the "fresh fruit" with my sandwich consisted of only a small bunch of grapes. Oh well.
Our grade for Tusker House - 6 out of 10
Our total bill - $19.68
The early lunch worked out pretty well, as it gave me time to recharge for:
Dinner at Narcoossee's (7:00 PS) -
We were both ready for another great meal and actually got pretty hungry early for us. So we headed over to Magic Kingdom and, thankfully, caught the ferry boat from MK to the Grand Floridian. This was an extremely relaxing little trip, and gave us a gorgeous view of the resort and, of course, the restaurant as well. We arrived actually quite early (a little after 6:30) and were cheerfully seated immediately (a big thank you to the hostess for being so flexible). Steve was our waiter, and went off to grab the obligatory water for Lisa and (amazingly enough!) a Guenoc Petite Syrah for me (see, told you I was feeling better).
A quick note about the view -- WOW! What a fantastic view from this restaurant. Looking right out over the lagoon straight at Cindy's castle. Gorgeous. On to appetizers:
As I mentioned, we were both hungry, so we ordered three appetizers...
For Lisa - Zesty Shrimp with Tomato Coulis and Horseradish Cream
For Me - Cornmeal Fried Fanny Bay Oysters with Applewood Smoked Bacon and Leek Slaw with Lemon Aioli
For both - Butternut Squash and Blue Crab Soup with Chive Cream
Steve brought the soup already divided for us into two separate bowls (a great touch -- that is the type of over and above service that really makes a difference). It was beyond exquisite. Lisa and I both felt it was the equal of, and possibly better than, the Acorn Squash soup we had at the Signature Dinner the previous night. We asked for the recipe for this soup, so if anyone else is interested, just let me know and I'll post it!
Both of the other appetizers were delicious as well. The horseradish cream perfectly added just the right amount of zing to the shrimp. The tangy slaw, bacon and oyster combo was fantastic as well. And for dinner:
For Lisa - Maine Lobster, Steamed with Vanilla Sauce and Roasted Asparagus
For Me - Pan-Roasted Black Grouper with Brentwood Corn Risotto and Chili Oil
The vanilla sauce that came with Lisa's lobster was amazing (and the meat was extremely moist). My grouper was perfectly prepared and had so much flavor. I was truly impressed with the quality of the ingredients and how well each was prepared. As we were finishing dinner, the Executive Chef stopped by our table to see if we were enjoying our dinners. We, of course, were LOVING it! We then proceeded to have a 20 minute conversation with him, learning that he used to live just two towns west of us up here in CT. It IS a small world after all!
Dessert time:
For Lisa - Tiramisu - Kahlua and espresso soaked lady fingers with mascarpone cheese
For Me - Dark Chocolate Mousse Timbale with a thin praline crust
Lisa's tiramisu was fantastic. My mousse was also very good, but almost too rich at this point. I filled up very quickly and couldn't finish, but I was one happy camper by then.
Our grade for Narcoossee's - 9.5 out of 10
Our total bill (not incl. grat.) - $131.25
The only thing that kept this from a perfect 10 was the noise level. There was a surprising number of children dining here, and the restaurant, at times, got fairly loud (never to the point where it severly detracted from the meal). Frankly, I was surprised to see so many kids (especially younger kids) as this certainly wasn't the type of place I would consider for a "family" meal. Maybe I'm just being a fuddy-duddy. At any rate, trust me, the quality of the food, service and view makes any amount of noise worth dealing with. Narcoossee's should be a must on anyone's list.
Next installment hopefully tomorrow morning! Nighty-night!
