Just back (15 days) - food, service & tips

We just returned from a very long WDW trip (5 resorts in 15 days), so I am very exhausted at the moment, but I wanted to make a quick post regarding our experience with the DP.

I come from an Italian restaurant family, so I have eaten in a ton of restaurants in my short 37 years of life - we've eaten at pretty much every WDW restaurant multiple times as we don't like counter service at all, but this time we also tried a few Signature restaurants as kids are great about being in restaurants (most of the time - LOL!)

We were on the Deluxe Plan for 11 nights, regular for 3 nights and nothing for 1 night. This was our 1st time on Deluxe, as we've done DDE several times and regular DP as well - we also did Concierge level at CT and Yacht Club. Much preffered the food/beverage offerings at Contemporary.

Here are my thoughts:

Food - Some restaurants have improved, others have downgraded and others have stayed the same. By far, the best meal we had was at Yachtsmen Steakhouse - it was superb! Next best were: Cali Grill, Citricos, Marrakesh & Kona Cafe. Worst food was at Chef Mickey's (we don't like it, but daughter does), Brown Derby & Spoodles.

Service - We had some exceptional servers: Cali Grill, Yachtsmen, Citricos & Coral Reef (all of them got more than 20% tip) and some good servers, but over the course of 15 days, we noticed that service has gone down. We had some servers who literally didn't come to our table at all, so we had to bus our own tables, didn't get refills, messed up receipts despite having lengthy conversations about placing tip on room, rude, forgetful & unpleasant servers. Honestly, some of them just disappeared and so we weren't sure what the heck was going on. By far the worst service we had was at Brown Derby, followed by: Boma (yikes!) and O'Hana.

Tips - There is just too much paperwork for the DP. Servers are forgetting about charging tips to room, so if they close their ticket, you are out of luck and must give cash, or, no tip. We received multiple copies of receipts with stuff crossed out in error and we had to wait for very (and I mean very) long waits for receipts. Most servers were good, but those who were not, made for very long waits (some servers also lost our receipts) and this was very frustrating. Would love to see tips included again as the whole process is a bit wacky as some servers blatantly asked us or reminded us about their tip at beginning of meal (and these servers surprisingly, gave bad service, go figure!)

Crowds - Hardly any restaurants were taking walk-ups at all. Most were booked up each and every night for dinner, but the few who took walk-ups (some were breakfast and some were for dinner) were giving about 45-90 mins waits, depending upon restaurant. Met many guests who thought they could just walk up to Chef Mickey's or Crystal Palace and get a table without reservations, so this made for some hostile situations at the podiums.

Refillable Mugs - This is a waste for us as we don't drink pop, and most resorts don't have apple juice, and this is a big problem. I don't want to debate the whole soda pop issue as I despise pop, so needless to say, the mugs got packed in our luggage and will be used here at home. We also didn't like the generic mugs either.

Misc - Restaurants that aren't owned by Disney are not allowing for bottled water while on DP because they only have large $6.50 bottles, and this made us crazy! This happened on last trip, but we honestly thought that with DX, they would have corrected that. When I can't get a bottle of water with an extremely overpriced $20.00 plate of pasta at Tutto Italia, yet the Plaza will give me that same $6.50 bottle with an $8.00 sandwich, we have problems!

Summary - We usually eat 2-3 TS meals per day, so the Deluxe was great in terms of finances (haven't figured it all out yet), but it was difficult at times to get to our ressies as the kids were having some issues. We did well though as we made use of snack credits for light lunches and bottled water. Regular DP has lost some value with absence of appetizer as we don't always eat dessert, but we stayed concierge level at end of our trip, and wanted a bit of a break. DX is a much better value - would love to see a DP with 2 TS and 1 snack per day and no refillable mug. We only order what we can eat, so we didn't order dessert or appetizers many times either.

We had some fabulous food, some stellar service and some incredible experiences (celebrated Mother's Day, birthday & anniversary). All in all, it was good, but some food and service needs to be drastically improved. Tutto Italia for instance is so grossly overpriced, just like Alfredo's was - I've had better food at Olive Garden, and places like Crystal Palace & 1900 Park Fare continue to be consistent by serving good food, great character interaction and good service, and most Signature restaurants, except for Brown Derby, are exceptional in every way! We also did the Mother's Day brunch @ Epcot, and were underwhelmed by this experience as well - food was ok, atmosphere was beautiful and service was ok - again, had to buy a bottle of water, which they added a service charge to - not impressed at all!

Please feel free to ask any questions of me and I'll do my best to answer them! Happy eating to all, Tiger :)

Thanks for the review. It sounds like it was fun.

I'm becoming convinced that I'll just take cash for tips, and not plan to charge tips to the room. It seems awkward enough to have to tell your server what you're going to tip them, then have them ring it up. Add the fact that it's taking a lot of time, and we'll be there during free dining, and it sounds like a lot of time-consuming frustration.

Thanks for the review! So Chef Mickey's wasnt good huh?

Chef Mickey's is never good. :) We've given several chances for dinner, so thought we'd try breakfast as our daughter loves it there. Restaurant was dirty, overcrowded, very noisy & chaotic, bad food, bad service & quick characters.

I'm actually more surprised that the Plaza does include bottled water under the/any DDP, than that other table service restaurants don't (although, at least according to the DIS menu, it's expected to satisfy two diners at the Plaza http://www.wdwinfo.com/wdwinfo/dining/diningdetail.cfm?Restaurant.ID=150).

She brought my hubby and I each one bottle, plus a small Dasani for my daughter. Restaurants should have several water bottle options available so that people can get bottled water on the DP. We can't drink Orlando water, don't drink pop, and drink minimal juice, so bottled water should be an option. I know it costs more, but we were on the Deluxe plan and so places like Tutto and Chefs are already grossly overcharging for subpar food, so have Dasani bottles available for patrons.

This has bugged us so much, that we will not be going back to Tutto, Chefs or any special events as this is a make or break issue for us. They have no problem with serving us food that may go to waste, yet they can't be bothered to offer water to DP guests?

I'm surprised to hear about Tutto. I thought it is a vast improvement over Alfredo's. The bread and olive oil is fantastic and I had to go back to get another Tortelloni in cream sauce with a veal reduction.

We always dine at the Brown Derby and have always had a wonderful meal. Last trip being Nov. 07. Could you please share your experience, I'm so sorry it was one of your worst experiences. We're just in the process of choicing our dining for our Christmas trip.

Thanks,
Belle

I know it costs more, but we were on the Deluxe plan and so places like Tutto and Chefs are already grossly overcharging for subpar food, so have Dasani bottles available for patrons.

The word "Deluxe" is only used as a Name for this other Dining Plan. The additional $32 you pay for the plan is given back in value, not status:

Assuming 2TS, 1CS, 2 Snack credits used daily on the Deluxe Plan the $32 additional daily cost covers:

1 Additional Snack
2 Appetizers
1 Additional TS meal
1-2 Beverages/day if you fill your mug twice daily (coffee, juice, soda, etc)

Adding all of this up could easily come to $3+18+25+4 or $50 a day and even more if you chose 3TS meals vs including any CS meals

There are no other "privleges" necessary to make the Deluxe plan worth the value. So getting bottled water as a TS beverage won't matter on the Basic or Deluxe plan. It will either be at the discretion of the restaurant or become a blanket policy of NO under the DP.

As someone who has worked in the industry you can understand food costs, profit margins, etc.

DP Beverages:
Tap water is the cheapest thing there is, but given free of charge so no
profit margin

Fountain drinks have the best profit margin, mostly water and if you add enough ice  cha ching

Bottled Water: Best profit margin bottled product available, I wouldn't give it away either. Providing that on the DP is just that as I will collect the same $ from Disney whether I give you the bottle of water, tap water or a fountain drink; my obligation is to provide a beverage, not a bottled beverage at a TS restaurant; some of the places you mentioned are going to have higher food costs, so saving a profitable product like bottle water for straight sales make good business sense for the restaurant.

I am not in the high end of the restaurant business, but I am in the business. I will sell you a bigger fountain drink beverage for less than any bottled beverage I carry and am gleefully happy to do so. In fact I'll even discount that beverage if you buy a "combo". ;)

By the way the water from the fountain machine is filtered similar to the Dasani offered at WDW. You could consider using the mugs for that next time. You could also request that your water glass at any TS place be filled from the fountain machine too. Bottled water is an option with CS meals at any of the resorts and some of the park places (Main Street Bakery at MK for sure).

You are fortunate to spend that kind of time at Disney and to enjoy the perks of the Deluxe plan, congrats and thanks for sharing your views and experiences.

Oh Tiger, I am sorry you had such terrible service. I have to say, I am one to never ask for a manager. It is so sad that one bad experience can ruin an dining experience.

Thanks for your in depth response.

Re: Deluxe Plan. Since Disney decided to keep appetizers for DX diners, they should also have allowed for more consistent beverage choices. You can get some very expensive milkshakes or other beverages at some restaurants, but not bottled water at others. I totally know that bottled water costs more money, but not including it is a real slap in the face to the diners who are paying a premium to be on that plan. For instance, we ate at Mother's Day brunch at Epcot on Sunday - adults are $46.99/person plus tax & tip, yet we had to purchase a bottle of water and they added a service charge to it. Again, it's at the World Showcase restaurants where we encountered this - they were pretentious and grossly overpriced, so this makes sense that they don't provide bottled water as it cuts into their profit margin. Thanks for the suggestion of using water from the machines, but we still find it tastes a bit funny, so we need to stick to bottled water as we have sensitive tummies and food allergies/sensitivities to worry about.

All in all, we enjoyed being on the Deluxe Plan like I said, but these few issues really bothered us, and have been bothering us over the past few years, but we had hoped that with the Deluxe plan that they would have worked out a more consistent beverage policy.

Thanks, Tiger
