The Not So Scary Murphy Family Vacation!!!
Day One 10/27/02
Cast Myself, dh, ds (3 years old), and ds (16 months old)
Flight, YourRide, Old Key West, Magic Kingdom, Olivias
Our journey begins with an early morning flight out of Indy. Everything went smoothly at the airport, but I wish I could say the same about our flight.
My 16-month-old son spent the better part of two hours screaming in pain from the pressure in his ears.
I gave him a decongestant and pain reliever before we left, but it didnt seem to do any good. I felt every eye on the plane bore into the back of my head as I tried everything I knew to get him to be quiet
sippy cup, pacifier, crackers, cookies, toys, books, nothing worked. The lady sitting across the aisle kindly offered him a piece of gum, but I informed her that most one year olds dont chew gum. Duh!
We arrived in Orlando in the late morning and the sun was shining brightly. We were all dressed in winter clothes but we didnt want to stop and change, we decided to wait until we arrived at Old Key West. Our fellow DISer Rabbit met us at the baggage claim with a smiling face and terrific personality. Previously we have used Happy Limo, Florida Town Car, and Tiffany, but I can definitely say that YourRide was the BEST car service weve ever used.
He picked us up in a brand new Ford Excursion, which allowed plenty of room for all our luggage and B.S.E. (baby support equipment). Monsters Inc. was playing on the TV, which thrilled our 3 year old and started our vacation off perfectly.
I really cant say enough about Rabbit
he gave us a long grocery stop at Publix, handled all our luggage, and kept us entertained with funny stories and interesting information. We will DEFINITELY be using YourRide for all our future trips to Disney.
We arrived at Old Key West and as soon as we pulled in the gate I relaxed. I really love this resort. DH and I both agree that it makes us feel like were really away from it all. It doesnt even feel like Orlando . More like Key West!
We had made a couple of room requests on our reservation (building with an elevator, villa on the third floor) and also faxed them in a few days prior but it didnt seem to make any difference.
According to the CM who checked us in the entire resort was full and they couldnt honor our requests. We were a little upset, but there was nothing we could do. They said it should be ready around 4 pm so we decided to buy our APs and go to the Magic Kingdom for the afternoon.
We were pleasantly surprised when we arrived because the park was half empty and there was no wait for any ride. We walked right onto Buzz, Pooh, Dumbo, Pirates, etc. and had a great afternoon.
After that we went back to Old Key West and to our villa (building 13, 2nd floor), with an open mind and tired feet! It wasnt easy lugging a baby and a toddler up the stairs along with the double stroller and diaper bag, but we didnt want it to ruin our trip, so we grinned and bared it. Our two-bedroom villa was beautiful. There is no way to describe how enormous these units are unless you see them with your own eyes. We love the full kitchen, huge living room, dining room, porch, laundry room, Jacuzzi, etc, etc, I could go on and on. You just have to see them for yourself to believe it.
Our first PS was dinner at Olivias. We had heard great things about the restaurant and we were starving! I hate to say that our experience there was not great.
Our waitress was incredibly slow and was missing through most of our meal. We saw her a total of 3 times
when we ordered, when she brought the food, and when she brought the check. She never checked on us or brought drink refills.
It was bad. The food however was pretty good. I had the penne with chicken and dh had the prime rib. Not the best meal weve had at Disney, but not the worst. I would eat there again, but hope for better service.
Nighttime at OKW is so wonderful. We can put the boys to bed in their own room and then roam around the rest of the villa as long as we want. We can eat, drink, do laundry, fire up the Jacuzzi, watch TV, sit on the porch, paint my toenails, ANYTHING!!! It's great, we dont have to worry about disturbing the kids. What could be better than that?? Most nights we were so tired we went to bed shortly after they did, but it was still nice to have some privacy and freedom.
Day Two 10/28/02
MGM Studios, Pizza Planet, Epcot, San Angel Inn
I wore my LGR (lime green ribbon) everyday but only met one group of DISer. They were waiting for the bus at OKW when I spotted their lime green. It was Popie and family. I think he said they had a group of 13 total. They were super nice and we talked while waiting for the bus.
We ran into them again waiting for the bus on Halloween. It was neat to finally meet someone from the board. After that we headed to MGM. Im not going to bore you with a play by play of every ride we went on because you guys all know the rides as well as I do. But I will say that we never waited in line more than 5 minutes for anything until the following weekend, which Ill get to later. The only time we used Fast Pass was for TOT and RNR, but the lines really werent bad. I am so spoiled now I dont think I could wait in line ever again. (More on that later) Oh, and I was happy to see my favorite CM, TJ, still working the Tower of Terror.
He is just the BEST! Sometimes I wonder if hes acting or not.
He's just TOO good.
We saw so many characters on this trip it was unbelievable!!! Disney must have tripled the usual amount because they were everywhere. I cant think of a character that we DIDNT see at least 3 times during the week. Heck, who needs a character meal???
My boys especially love Toy Story, Monsters Inc, and Lilo and Stitch, and we saw all of them on our first day at MGM, along with many others.
Pizza Planet for lunch was good, as usual. Its cheap, fast, and the kids love it. Soon after that we were back in the room for the boys to nap. They usually slept about 2-3 hours every afternoon, which is very unusual for our 3 year old. I think they just wear themselves out physically and mentally at WDW. Heck, so do I!!

That night we hit Epcot and San Angel Inn for dinner. DH and I had a few Margaritas, which were delicious, and the food was good also. The nacho appetizer was especially yummy. We enjoy the atmosphere there, and the boys like it too. After dinner we caught the Tapestry of Nations parade and checked out the Food and Wine Festival, which all looked great but we were too stuffed to eat any of it. We left before Illuminations started because we knew the boys wouldnt like it, but we saw part of it from the bus stop.
Oh, while Im on the top of the bus let me vent. Why cant the Hospitality House be the first stop coming into OKW? Doesnt that make sense? Well, since its the last stop we had to either ride around OKW for 12 minutes or get off at the first stop, Peninsular Road. We chose to get off at the first stop and walk to building 13, and Ill tell ya when youve been walking all day you dont want a long walk back to your villa plus lugging 2 kids, a stroller, and a diaper bag up a flight of stairs, but we did it.
Day Three 10/29/02
Animal Kingdom, Restaurantasaurus, House of Blues, DTD
This day kinda got messed up because we were supposed to go to Breakfastasaurus but overslept, so we skipped it. Animal Kingdom was fun . Did the safari, had cinnamon rolls at Tusker House, did Dinoland, rode the rapids, ate at Restaurantasaurus for lunch, then headed back to OKW to rest. We really enjoyed our afternoons at the resort while the boys napped. It gave us a chance to relax. We'd take turns running down to the "suitcase" for drinks.
That night we took the boat from OKW to DTD and had dinner at the House of Blues. I was surprised how good the food was, DH and I both had the shrimp poboy, and it was nice not worrying about the boys being loud the music was louder than they were!
After dinner we hit the shops, Lego land, Ghiardelli, and had a nice relaxing evening.
Day Four 10/30/02
Magic Kingdom, Columbia Harbor House, MGM, Boardwalk, ESPN
Another easy park day. No crowds, no lines. We started in Adventureland working our way around the park. When we came to Fantasyland there was a sign saying not to enter unless you were willing to be on TV or something. We had no idea what was going on, we guessed maybe they were filming a commercial or something, so we headed in. The rest was like a dream something youd see in a movie, or read about as I rounded the corner near Peter Pans Flight I saw the most amazing site of my life!
At first I thought my eyes were playing tricks on me
Red
. Yellow
. Purple
Blue
could it be???
No, it cant be!!!!!
But it WAS!!!!!
It was THE WIGGLES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
My heart stopped beating, my eyes widened; all I could do was squeal with delight!!!!
A cast member walked over to me and said Oh, I see you like The Wiggles
I couldnt even speak
my whole body was tingling
I cant even tell you how excited I was.
I just started jumping up and down
. I RAN to where they were, pulled out my camera and used an entire roll of film!
I screamed, I waved; I made a total fool out of myself!
My dh was so disgusted he left me standing there. I never left the ropes until The Wiggles had made their way out of the park. What LUCK!
WOOHOOO!!! I was walking on a cloud for the rest of the day. I cant WAIT to have my film developed and Ill post them all for you guys. (Dont hate me JTB!)
OK, back to reality, well semi-reality. We had lunch at Columbia Harbor House, the food was OK, and then we headed back to OKW. We had a babysitter that evening and night so dh and I hit the adult rides at MGM, rode RNR 3 times, took the boat to the Swan and drank our way around the Boardwalk. It was fun. Great nachos and mudslides at ESPN! DH was happy because the Celtics and Bruins were on.
Day Five Halloween
Epcot, Electric Umbrella, Cinderellas Royal Table, MNSSHP
We decided to start the day at Epcot hoping it would be the least busy park, and it was. We were also on a pin mission for dhs Mom. We were able to get all 3 Epcot Halloween pins easily, two from the pin station and one from Mousegear. We had lunch at the Electric Umbrella, fast and cheap, and then headed back to OKW to rest for our big night at MNSSHP. The boys dressed as Buzz Lightyear and a Little Green Man.
They were so cute.
I wore an orange t-shirt that said This Is My Costume, and dh didnt dress up. We got to the bus stop around 4:00 and waited over 30 minutes for the bus to arrive.
Luckily our PS wasnt until 5:45 so we werent late. We had a wonderful dinner at Cindys
. I had the salmon, and dh had the beef tenderloin. Both were delicious and we agreed it was our best meal of the trip. We finished around 6:50, just in time for the party.
First we had our picture taken over by the Hall of Presidents. The line wasnt too bad, and Im hoping well actually get the correct picture in the mail! Ha ha ha
We did some trick-or-treating, but the lines were really long for candy. (Not to mention that most of the candy was lame) We rode Thunder Mountain, Jungle Cruise, and Buzz, but that was about it. The show in front of the castle was great, and the fireworks were also good.
They shot them off all around the park in a circle over our heads
very cool.
The boys had fun and lasted until about 10:30, thanks to long naps that afternoon. It was a good night, but really crowded.
Day Six 11/01/02
YC, Yacht Club Galley, MGM, Hollywood and Vine, Fantasmic
We woke up early and packed up everything we could. We left our pumpkin lights, and other Halloween decorations, there just wasnt any room left in our bags. As it was we had about 5 bags of groceries we didnt know what to do with.
We knew that going from a 2 bedroom villa to a standard room at the YC would require throwing away some of it. DH went over to YC around 10 am and surprisingly our room was ready.
When the OKW bellman came to collect our luggage he offered to take my youngest son and I over to YC to meet dh, which was AWESOME!
It saved us from having to call a cab because we had all the groceries we wanted to bring with us. He was a really nice guy and made about 10 trips up and down the stairs with all our stuff. That has to be the hardest job at Disney. I dont think he had a dry thread on him.
Yacht Club is beautiful.
The renovations are more than renovations, it seems like a new hotel. New carpet, paint, wallpaper, furniture, bedding, everything was new and fresh. We were in room 4140, 4th floor, 2 doors down from the elevator, 2 queens and a daybed, overlooking the front of the resort, which was fine with us. Actually, the CM checked for upgrades but none were available. DH said she was very nice and helpful. He didnt even ask for an upgrade, she checked on her own. I didnt see any signs of refurbishment at YC, but I did see some scaffolding near Beach Club and a blocked off area at Stormalong Bay. I would assume that YC is now complete. We were very pleased with the resort and I think its just as nice as the GF, maybe even better now that everything is new. We had lunch at the Yacht Club Galley, which was delicious! DH had the open face mushroom ravioli and I had the club sandwich. I love that cheese bread they serve... ours was still warm. Yum!!!!
We headed to MGM by boat and caught the Stars in Motorcars Parade. Then it was on to Hollywood and Vine for the Fantasmic dinner package. The buffet was fine nothing great but we wanted to get the reserved seating. After dinner we took our time going to the show we got there around 6:30 and I was disappointed to see the reserved seating was way over on the side.
We could have had better seats if we would have come in the main entrance. Very disappointing, but the show was great.
On our way out a little girl grabbed me by the hand and was crying. She had lost her mother and sister. I walked her over to a security guard but he didnt seem to know what to do
I asked him if they could announce something and he just stood there like an idiot. So I talked to the girl and tried to calm her down. She looked like she was about 7 years old and she knew her Moms cell #
but when I dialed it from my cell she didnt answer.
By this time we were worrying wed miss the last boat to the YC, and the little girl was in a panic. Luckily we found her mother shortly after that. (Who, by the way, didnt say Thank You or anything to us)
Day Seven 11/02/02
Magic Kingdom, Cosmic Rays, El Pirata y el Perico, Spectromagic
We did every ride in Fantasyland during the first 30 minutes the park was open.
It was wonderful not having big crowds. We had lunch at Cosmic Rays, fast and cheap, and then went back to YC for naps. I did some shopping at Fittings and Fairings
they have some really cute YC shirts, and walked over to BCV to tour the model. WOW!
Those 2 bedroom villas are so small compared to OKW. I couldnt believe it. I dont think wed ever stay there, and it definitely made up my mind that if we ever buy DVC well do an OKW resale. They must be about double the square footage.
I just love it there!!!
We had a PS to eat at Ohana but overslept so we grabbed at quick dinner at El Pirata y el Perico before Spectromagic and the Fantasy in the Sky fireworks. DH and I decided that since we spent so much time at MK well definitely stay at the GF next spring. Its not that we didnt enjoy YC, but our kids love MK so it makes sense to be on the monorail. Next Thanksgiving we might try the Poly if the renovations are done. Or maybe OKW again.
Day Eight 11/03/02
Animal Kingdom, Restaurantasaurus, Cape May Clambake, DTD
Started the day off at AK and WOW where did all the people come from???
The park was packed and we were miserable. After lunch at Restaurantasaurus (my 3 year olds favorite) we went back to YC to escape the madness. Later we found out it was Jersey Week but I didnt know that the whole state of New Jersey came to WDW at the same time!!
What a nightmare. We had dinner at Cape May, which was disappointing, but Im glad we tried it because we have always wondered. The food was so-so and I think Ive decided to stay away from buffets from now on. I do have to admit that they had the BEST desserts though.
I think I ate my $30 worth in chocolate mousse cake!
After dinner it was back to DTD for shopping. I have a MAJOR vent about the bus system. WHY do they combine Swan, Dolphin, YC, BC, and BW all on the same bus??? 5 deluxe resorts sharing one bus????? I dont understand the reasoning behind it. Getting to MK, AK, and DTD from YC was terrible we would make 5-6 stops if you include stopping for Blizzard Beach on the way to AK. It really almost ruined the last 2 nights of our trip because with all the Jersey people it was just too crowded. Many people had to stand, and some people couldnt even get on and had to wait for the next bus!
Insane!
It seems that Disney wasn't prepared very well for this rush of people.
Day Nine 11/04/02
Epcot, GF Pontoon boat rental, GF Café, Stormalong Bay, Ohana
After our crowded day at AK we decided to start with Epcot knowing it wouldnt be crowded. After doing a few things there the boys were begging for MK so we hopped on the monorail. As the monorail passed through the Contemporary we could see the crowds. It was unbelievable.
People were backed up from the entrance, back through security tents and down near the boat launches. We didnt even bother trying to fight that mess so we headed for the GF. We decided to rent a pontoon boat and relax out on the lagoon. It was a perfect idea.
The boys really enjoyed it, and so did dh and I.
We had never seen the monorail resorts from that angle. It was neat. After that we had lunch at the GF Café, one of my favorites, and then headed back to the YC (not an easy task). We spent the afternoon at Stormalong Bay, our first time, and enjoyed it. I didnt really like all the sand everywhere, but my 3 year old loved it. It was crowded, lots of Jersey accents, but luckily there was plenty of room for everyone. Its a nice big pool area, but I wouldnt call it a water park like some people do. Its just a big pool with lots of sand.
We left YC an hour before our PS at Ohana but we were 5 minutes late.
That darn bus transportation!!! We waited about 20 minutes for the bus, went to MK, and took the monorail to the Poly. I feel like too much of my vacation time is spent trying to GET somewhere.
Its just really frustrating to wait for buses and then when they finally come they have to make tons of stops to all these other resorts.
Dinner at Ohana was wonderful.
A perfect last meal for our trip. The food is so good, and the atmosphere is really fun for the kids. Even my 16 month old had fun
he was dancing in his highchair when they played Hacuna Matata and Hawaiian Roller Coaster Ride.
I had the drink called Sand in my Pants
its half Pina Colada and half Strawberry Daiquiri. Yummmm!
The salad, the wontons, the wings, the meats and shrimp, everything was delicious and we left the restaurant happy and full.
Unfortunately that happy feeling left when we attempted to take a bus from the Poly to DTD. There was a HUGE line of people waiting and when the bus came it was already half full. I think this Jersey Week is about as bad as Ive ever seen the crowds. Ill make a mental note never to go down during that time again, and luckily our trip was over. Once we crammed on the bus like sardines we headed to the GF only to find an angry mob that had been waiting for a bus to DTD that was already full.
I dont blame those people one bit because they are paying top dollar for their resort and cant even get a bus!
The ride to DTD was a nightmare, my youngest ds was in my lap and kicked the lady standing in front of us the whole way
Im sure shell be black and blue by morning! When we finally got to DTD there was another mob of people waiting for the Swan/Dolphin/YC/BC/BW bus! Can you believe how insane that is??
Couldnt they add another bus??? I was fuming.
By the time we got back to YC we had spent over 2 hours on Disney transportation. On the elevator ride up to the 4th floor I said to myself that Id never come back to Disney again unless I had a personal limo to drive me everywhere! HA!
Luckily, all of that anger quickly melted away when I opened the door to our room and found all the special treats the mousekeeper had left for us. She had arranged all of our sons toys, left little towel animals on both beds and the daybed. Also in the bathroom! She really went all out. I guess tipping twice a day really paid off in the end. The boys were thrilled and it ended our trip on a happy note after a terrible night on the bus.
Well, I guess thats about it. We flew home today. If anybody has any questions about OKW, YC, the parks, our meals, etc, just let me know. Ill have tons of pictures soon to share with you. Its good to be home, but Im already planning our next trip in the back of my mind! April cant come fast enough.
