Acting U.S. Surgeon General Promotes "Healthy Youth for a Healthy Future" at Disney
Acting U.S. Surgeon General Rear Adm. Steven K. Galson, M.D., M.P.H., will make a stop on his nationwide tour to promote the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services' Childhood Overweight and Obesity Prevention Initiative on May 6 at Walt Disney World in Orlando. The initiative targets prevention of overweight and obesity prevention, and the promotion of healthy lifestyles, for young people.

The "Healthy Youth for a Healthy Future" initiative focuses on recognizing and showcasing those communities throughout the nation that are addressing childhood overweight and obesity prevention by helping kids stay active, encouraging healthy eating habits, and promoting healthy choices.

"I am honored to have the opportunity to visit communities and organizations across the country, like Walt Disney World, and meet first-hand with those actively engaged in finding ways to prevent childhood overweight and obesity," said Dr. Galson.

Dr. Galson will meet with officials from Walt Disney World Resort on behalf of The Walt Disney Company to present them with the "Healthy Youth for a Healthy Future" Champion Award in recognition of their well-balanced food initiative which was designed to encourage better eating habits.

According to 2005 data from the Florida Department of Health, 14.4 percent of high school students were at risk for overweight and an additional 10.9 percent are overweight. Also in 2005, 31.3 percent of middle school students did not go to physical education classes at all during an average school week.

Additional information on the Surgeon General's Initiative can be found at http://www.surgeongeneral.gov/obesityprevention.html"

Amen to that.

People also have to remember that even thin people can have blocked arties from too many fatty foods. I've known thin, young looking 40 year olds to drop dead of a heart attacks. Pay attention to what you eat. Even at Disney.

Then maybe they should consider having an appetizer or salad on the DPP instead of having dessert included. Way to go on the whole wheat buns and then offering cake, ice cream, shakes, pastries, candy as the dessert. Stupid

Yeah, it kinda goes along with drinking DIET pepsi with your 2,000 calorie grease dripping hamburger!

It's all about balance. :rotfl2:

So....do you think I could substitute those carrot sticks for carrot cake? After all the cake has carrots PLUS milk and flour and sometimes even raisins. So the cake is healthier right?

LOL!!! That is how I feel about the whole thing too! My main concern is that I would rather have my family have a salad or veggie type appetizer added to the DDP and take away the dessert. Then if we feel like we NEED (LOL) dessert we can purchase one and share it.

Oh well, we make the best choices we can and have FUN!

Just because dessert is part of the plan doesn't mean people have to order it. When we are on the plan we never order dessert for counter service and only once in a while order it for table service (usually splitting it).

I am happy to see whole grain breads and carrot sticks served at Disney. That's how we eat at home and we actually like that kind of food. What's wrong with that? Thank you Disney for a few healthy choices.

Carrot sticks are an option on the kids meal. You can still order fries if you want. Wheat bread should be offered as a choice, not exclusively. Is that whole wheat bun magically going to make the 1/4 pound hot dog good for you? No one is that naive. Good for Disney providing healthier foods, but it would be better if they let guests decide for themselves, rather than foisting it on everyone.

Of course you're right. But the dining plan certainly does provide an incentive to order one. Not ordering one is like leaving money on the table, and that will prove too great an incentive for many.

The dessert situation, coupled with the healthy eating initiatives, sends a mixed message.

I couldn't agree more! Whole wheat buns and non fat milk used in the mac n' cheese, carrots offered with fried chicken nuggets, hot dogs, hamburgers, ice cream sundaes, soda. They have got to be kidding me. I have no problem with healthy options. Just don't force it upon my kids who are not over weight, and eat responsibly at home!!

God forbid Disney foist (force) your kids to eat healthy. You have an option. If you don't like the whole grain bun, eat something else.

When you go into the grocery store you don't have to buy the junk food just because it's there.

I actually love the whole wheat buns on the burgers and hot dogs :upsidedow . And not because they are healthier. I just think they taste better :confused3 .

I actually welcome the healthy changes at WDW- not so crazy about caraway seeds in my pizza crust if that is in fact true but have no problem with my kids being able to get their "5 a day" while there.

think they'll deep fry those carrot sticks for me if i ask real nice??!! :rotfl:

No more chocolate chip ice cream cookie either:(

Yo, yo, yo!! Dark chocolate as found in chocolate chips are heart healthy. It's also a veggie - cocoa beans!!! You can satsify your chocolate craving and still get a serving of veggies in one cookie. If the cookie is crunchy you can possibly clean your teeth, too. AND...ice cream contains calcium. Think of the healthy opportunities that await you!!:thumbsup2

:worship: I couldn't have said it better myself!
