Just a warning about weed 'n' feeds...

This time of year, I think it's important for people to pay close attention to weed and feed product application instructions. These are some serious chemicals people are handling and I almost lost my Dad to poisoning from it 11 years ago. He was applying a product with his push spreader and his usual "uniform" of overalls, socks, and tennis shoes, but some of the chemical was absorbed into his system (docs believed through the ankles) and he was VERY sick and nearly died. I can't walk into a garden center now without gagging at the smell as it is the same stench that was in the green gunk draining from his body in the hospital.

Don't mean to gross anyone out, but PLEASE be careful applying lawn chemicals!

I am so sorry to hear about your fathers experience. That is just horrible.

Thank you for sharing. I will certainly rethink the use of these chemicals in the future. It's just not worth it.

Hope your dad made a full recovery, graygables. It's amazing how many people use these toxic chemicals without giving safety a passing thought. Just the other day, I had a woman come in and ask for 2 very toxic insecticides. I advised her to read the directions very carefully, and wear protective clothing when she applied them. She looked at me blankly, and said, "Oh, are they dangerous? My tree guy just told me to mix 'em together and spray all over my trees and shrubs." I nearly threw up, I was so disgusted.
I've also heard of some very sad stories of folks who have lost puppies and kittens they let frolic on lawns treated with weed-n-feed.
