Jury Duty

Ugh. I had a jury summons back in July, but wasn't on the list to report. A few weeks ago I received a recall notice for tomorrow. This time I have been selected to report. At least you no longer have to spend the entire day at the courthouse. I don't have to be there until 12:15. I'm taking my PassPorter with me for reading material.

I got a summons for jury duty the week of November 7th. This is the second time that I've been called to do my civic duty. And my wife has been called twice as well in the past 20 years. And yet I know tons of people who have never been called. Random selection??? I wish I were so lucky with the Powerball lottery as I am with the jury pool lottery.

I have been called three times - made it to the final selection pool once - and got kicked out because I had a degree in Psychology!

I sure wish there was a way for the people who WANT to serve to be given a chance. I would gladly give up my spot each and every time I am called!!!!!

To me it is a pain and the case I actually made it into the courtroom on was over something silly that was an open and shut case from the start. Sorry, don't waste my time!!!!

This was my second call too. Last time I got as far as the courtroom, but wasn't selected to serve on a jury. This time we all waited about 90 minutes before the judge called and said the trial was to be continued - we were all dismissed. We're out of the pool until 2007.

I think the worst part of the process is not knowing whether you will be one of the chosen. If I knew ahead of time that I was certain to sit on a jury I would be less nervous.

I was called a few years ago and went for our county--the criminal didn't show up for trial so I was home by 11 AM. Just this last week I was to report on Tuesday, but called on Monday and found out the trial was not going forward. Hopefully that will buy me a few more years. DH has never been called!

I get called frequently -- at least every few years and always after an election. I have never been picked though. When that question comes up about having law enforcement in the family, I tell them I do, including a DEA agent cousin, a retired NYPD uncle, another cousin in corrections...... and I get dismissed. What really annoyed me the last time is that we had to show up in court by 8am and the judge doesn't stroll in until 11:30. All these people looking to get excused and we all had to wait for him to show.

I arrived so let to jury duty because I did not know where the court house at. By the time I got there they had pick 8 panels jury groups. I did not have served.

I had a excused prepared I would them I have ADD and Learn disabilty can not sit still that long.

I would be telling the truth because i barely still through 15 minute meeting at work being still. Lord knows if sugar and caffine that I would be a crazy fool out control. At they have banned me from having sugar and caffine. They make sure they that have something sugar free and caffine free for me eat or drink.

I have never been called for jury duty. I have never missed voting so don't understand how some get called often and some never. We could use a better system.

Me neither. Have never missed any type of election in 20 years. My parents were not even registered voters until about 10 years ago, and both of them get summoned about every two years.

They bother me every couple years. I hate going to jury duty but I always show up with I receive the summons in the mail. The last time I got one, we had just come in from food shopping and my DH was saying "oh, look what you got!" I took the summons and threw it across the room! Where's everybody who wants to serve -- I'll gladly let you go in my place. I don't even like my job that much but I'd rather go there than to jury duty.

I get called every 2 years w/out fail and the even more strange thing is EVERY time I get picked to be on a jury. I am so outspoken I cannot for the life of me figure out why they don't use their "picks" to get rid of me.
Oh well, I live in a very sleepy N. Dallas suburb and nothing very exciting ever happens.

I got a summons for jury duty in DC for December, but I am a registered voter in NJ, not here. I don't even know how they got my name.

I know it's my "civic duty", but for crying out loud....call someone who actually WANTS to serve!!!! I had to give up 3 vacation day for a stupid case that for one, should never have been in court and two, seeing as it was, it should have only taken 1/2 day NOT three!!!!.

I was able to swap my vacation days for jury duty days after I got my paperwork in the mail, but I still didn't enjoy having to sit in a hot courtroom watching hours of video's from a doctor who "couldn't" show up. They made us show up, why couldn't they make HIM show up???? They blanked out the parts that weren't "peritinate"... I timed a couple of blue screens---- 3 minutes.. they could have fast forward, but NO, we had to watch the blue screen. What a waste of MY time too!

I've been called once, but not chosen when I lived in a different county, but am currently "on call" for the Coroner's Jury in this county. It lasts for 4 weeks and the coroner's office has to send me notice by mail 5 days in advance IF they call me up, which I'm not sure will happen based upon the questionare they had me fill out...wanted to know if I was friends with any law enforcement officials...well, one of my nieces is a probation officer in the adjacent county and a friend, not a close one though, is a judge in the adjacent county...who happen to have sung at my wedding. So, I'm doubting that I ever get called, but if I do then I'll go and deal with it.

I always thought that if you got called and, even if they dismissed you, that you couldn't be called up for 7 years. Maybe that is just in my state (NY)?

It seems like I'm always getting called up. I once got called up w/in 6 months of the time I served. I had to call back, give all my info. and they had to confirm that I was in there w/in that 6 month period. It was a hassle b/c I had to keep calling back to see if they found me in the records, etc. and then they had to run it by some muckety-muck to have it confirmed that I had served 6 mos. earlier, blah-blah-blah. More time and effort spent in clearing it up and they made me feel like I was in the wrong and was trying to get out of it. I was so mad at the way I was treated!! The one woman didn't believe me and accused me of trying to get out of it. Funny thing was that I remembered the trial (it was a big one here and I really wanted to be in on it, so how could I forget?) and even remembered the date I went b/c it was the day before we were supposed to leave on vacation. Honestly! I knew more about it than they seemed to know. I'm sure it's computerized ... but why they couldn't find it and why it took forever is still beyond me. Oh, yeah -- it is NY State, after all.

Voted in every election since turning 18 and never been called thank goodness!

I kept getting called whn my kids were little and I was a SAHM. I finally said I would be more then happy to serve if they would provide the daycare for me. I didn't hear from them again until 2 years ago. I got picked, sat through 3 days of way too boring testimony and they settled just before deliberations! We were all po'd...we wanted to deliberate! It was a personal injury case and the guy was asking for a huge and I mean HUGE sum of money.

i think they put a permanant "do not call" sticker next to my name :rotfl2:

i used to get called regularly and would always get dismissed due to my job and friends/family in law enforcement. the last time i went it was during a totaly insane period at work. the judge asked each potential juror if they had any personal beliefs that might prejudice them against either side, so when my turn came up i said "my work experience leads me to believe that the penalty of perjury is not a detriment to outright lying by most people" (hey, i worked for social services and was involved in a major welfare fraud investigation at the time). both lawyers asked for me to be dismissed, the judge scowled and sent me on my way.

i have'nt been called back in years.

In PA,
A person who has served as a juror one (1) or two (2) days will be exempt from jury service the balance of that year and the following year. If you are selected and served on a jury for three (3) days or more, you are excused for the balance of that year and three (3) additional years.

I just had jury duty this month in NC. You don't get called again for 2 years here. They said they select the juror list from voter registration and from DMV. So even if you never vote but drive or have an ID card you can get called. This is the 3rd time I've been called and the 2nd jury I served on. This one was 4 days, and the 1st one was for 2 weeks. I hope they leave me off the list for awhile! DH has never been called! I need to learn how to get out of it. I think the phrase "can anyone really be unbiased?" might do it. :rotfl2:
