I am freaking out!! I got a summons to jury duty today for June 3rd. Any other time I would not mind this at all. But for 3 weeks starting May 25th my 7 yr old niece will be staying with us and then on June 15th we leave for WDW. I have all the arrangements for her day care set up and if I get picked for a jury it will all fall apart. I know that most of the time you get dismissed the first day, but about 10 yrs ago my mom got picked for a murder trial jury. She was SEQUESTERED for 2 weeks!!!
That cannot happen right now!! I don't want to get out of jury duty, just get it posponed till after our vacation and my niece gets home. BTW, I live in Texas. Any ideas??

On your jury card there should be a phone number where you can contact the court. Explain that you are responsible for caring for a 7 year old. One of the exemptions is for caring for a child under a certain age. Probably depends on what kind of case, and how many people were sent juror summons for that date. I recently served on a civil trial that lasted 12 days. Good Luck!

You can also explain in writing thst you have a trip planned and that and time off work closely related is not practicle at this time. You will most likely receive a postponement for a few months later.
Good Luck.

Call in , say the person is guilty and deserves LIFE :)

I thought you were able to postpone to a later date? Otherwise you may have to go that day. Once DH had it and told the lawyers he was leaving on vacation the next day which we were and they dismissed him.

generally speaking, if you haven't sought a postponement before, you're very likely to get one now due to your current circumstances. call the commissioner of jurors or whoever it is who is responsbile for arranging for jurors to be available for trials.

I agree with seeking a deferment.

I was called to jury duty when I was 8 1/2 months pregnant. After I explained my situation, I was deferred for a year.

But then I was called back -- they don't forget about you . . .

hi deb, its late for you anit it, tell them your a white male they hate us on jurys

I just recently sat on a jury, lasted 2 days. One the first day when all the potential jurors were in the courtroom the judge asked if anyone would not be able to serve if it went more than one day. Several people raised their hands and then talked to the judge and they were dismissed. I was holding a high number panel number so I thought I was safe, but they really dismiss a lot of people. If you can't get it postponed before, you will most likely be able to get dismissed on the day you are summoned to appear. Good Luck!!!

And Have a Wonderful Vacation!!!

What kind of court? I've been called 3 times for JP court, and never had to serve. I'd call and speak to someone and explain the situation, maybe they'll dismiss you prior to the trial. In fact, I was summoned to a JP court in Schertz, and the court called ME to let me know it was canceled.

HA, jason!!

Big fat hairy accreditation application due in a month, so burning the midnight oil. :( :(

Um, I don't think I can convince anyone I'm a WHITE MALE . . .

My wife got called a month ago to go tomorrow, 5/19. She has a state exam to be relicensed tomorrow and called. They told her to report in mid July. She was also told she could only delay it one time. She used to be exempt as a small business owner (less than 10 employees) but that excemption has been dropped.
