We had a discussion at dinner the other night with by brother and SIL. My boss has just told us we will no longer be paid for jury duty. My brother & SIL said they have never worked at a job where they weren't paid for jury duty. What is the policy where you work???

My job doesn't even pay you bereavement time.

Yes because I'm on salary. Non-exempt employees do not get paid.

My husband was NOT paid by his former employer and had to use vacation days to serve.

I get paid my full salary and get to keep the jury pay.

Yes, mine does pay me. And I have it coming up in November. I could get out of it since I've done it within the last 3 years, but now is a convenient time to do it, and the next time it might not be. Now I'll be exempt for the NEXT 3 years.

BTW, this is about the fourth or fifth time I've done it, and DH hasn't been called since he was in college (over 20 years ago.) What's up with that?

Yes but must turn over jury pay back to company

I thought it was a law that you had to be paid by your employer? No? Does it vary from state to state? I thought at least here in Texas. If not, now I've learned something. Any lawyers out there know if it's a law anywhere?

Yes, they pay me my normal wage. Plus they let me keep the check the county gives me! (a whoping $10 a day, but at least it pays for the train fare into the city).

Your employer must give you the day(s) off, and cannot fire you or punish you in any way for taking time to serve on a jury. But they do not have to pay you unless they want to.

All employees, both salaried and hourly, are paid their normal salary while on jury duty. They're also allowed to keep any jury-duty pay.

DH is the only person I know of who WANTS to serve on a jury! (I did it once and am in no hurry to do it again). He would get: to keep the jury paycheck, get a full days pay, drive only 15 minutes to courthouse instead of 60minutes to job and be there at 8am instead of walking out the door at 6am to be at work by 7am! He has been called, but never to a jury. Heck, we're so close, he came home for the lunch break!!
