*long post*At my school a graduation requirement is to take a public speaking class and then write a formal speech at the end of the semester and present it to the entire school during a school meeting. well, I finished mine and am presenting it on Thursday, I just wanted to know what you all thought about it.
the - mark means it is a new paragraph, i didn't want to make it super long with spaces.
-It seems each of us think we know what real problems are. And that those of others are minor, compared to our own. How often do we get perspective on our own problems by considering others?
-He lives in a trailer with two brothers and two parents. They never have any money, but they get by, some how. He isn’t upset about not getting the newest clothes fashion, or concerned when someone else is wearing the same jacket as he is. But instead he struggles with diabetes and helping his family stay off the streets. He has never met any of his other family members, because they live to far away and his family can’t afford to go on vacations to see them. He didn’t go to a boarding school, but he did make it to college. He was not concerned with getting into an Ivy League school, but more concerned with how he was going to pay to go to a community college. He finally graduates college and meets the woman of his dreams. After they marry, he decides to build them a house in the same town he grew up in and where his parents and youngest brother still live. This way, he can help his brother with his disabilities and help his parents as much as he can.
-His wife gets pregnant and the house he is building isn’t finished yet. The baby is born in the summer, a beautiful healthy girl. But a week later she is rushed back to the hospital and almost dies. He asks everyone he knows, even complete strangers, to pray for the little baby. At the time he wasn’t concerned with what team was playing on TV and whether or not he should get that new car. His only priority was his daughter. And a month later, a miracle happened: the baby survived a severe stroke.
-A woman just had a baby and her husband hadn’t finished building their house. She didn’t have the money to have a choice of which apartment had the better view or better access to the nearest mall. Her and her new family had to stay in her husband’s brother’s house with him and his second wife. His brother’s wife was sixteen and pregnant with twins. A year later when his brother’s wife went into labor, she told the woman that her family had to be out of her house when she came back from the hospital. So they were forced to move into a small low cost apartment until her husband finished their house.
-A four year old girl is molested by her own grandfather. She is scared and confused, he was supposed to love her and protect her. He wasn’t supposed to hurt her. She finally told her parents and they forbid her grandfather from ever seeing her again. Her father was not surprised that his father did this, but he was no less appalled by it. He wasn’t very surprised because his wife was molested by his father before she was his wife, but also because he knew there were other instances of incest in his family.
-A five year old girl looses her father to diabetes. She doesn’t know exactly what is going on, but she knows he will never come back and her life will never be the same. Her father’s family stopped talking to her and her mother and she didn’t know why. When she is older she becomes naturally curious and sends a letter to her grandmother telling her how much she hated never talking or seeing her father’s family. Her grandmother didn’t respond until her 15th birthday. After ten years the girl gets to see her grandmother again. She has a thousand questions going through her mind, but doesn’t ask any of them, because she doesn’t know how her grandmother will react. She walks into the same trailer she remembers from when she was five, and also into the most uncomfortable situation of her life. She wasn’t concerned that her grandmother might not be happy with her because she got a bad grade on her report card; she was more concerned with if her grandmother would even like her. She hasn’t seen or talked to her for 10 years, she doesn’t even know her.
-Her family wasn’t talking to her, so she didn’t even know that her aunt and uncle got a divorce, the same uncle that was supposed to be her mother’s best friend. She found out about the divorce when her cousins were in the paper for saving their grandfather and little sister from the fire that their mother started in her parents’ house. This is when she started to talk to one of her cousins. Her cousin said her life at home was not ideal at all. She said her mother and twin brother would get into screaming matches every night until all hours of the morning. She also said that her mom neglected her, especially when she was sick, and would tell her that she was worth nothing and would never amount to anything. The girl was outraged by her former aunt’s actions and wanted to take her cousins out of that house. As a sixteen year old girl, she is not extremely concerned about her grades or getting into the right college, she is more concerned about helping her family and making sure her and her family’s situation doesn’t get worse.
-These are true stories, traumas that we live through every day and which ultimately form our connection and give meaning to our relationships.
