My daughter school consist of 7th and 8th grade. They are having a Jr. Prom for them. Does anyone else school have such a thing? I'm not liking the idea very much. If they have a prom now what do they have to look forward to when there in high school and have a regular prom?

We had a Jr. High dance but we didn't call it junior prom. We still wore gowns and boys dressed up. Jr. Prom is not usually as fancy as regular prom.

In 8th grade my kids had a formal dance.
There is a junior prom and a senior prom here for the high-school. They are equally as fancy here.

We have an 8th grade dance, at a banquet hall, girls wear cute dressy dresses, boys wear button downs, khakis, some wear ties, dj, buffet, photo booth... Actally, same for the 6th grade dances.

Our junior formal (HS), girls get DRESSED, guys wear suits, its local. Senior prom, wedding banquets hall, limos spray tans, professional make upmand hair, weekend down the shore.

There is an 8th grade dance here - suits and dresses. And one high school prom that both juniors and seniors can attend.

Our Jr High has a dance in the school gym. The girls get as dressed up as the dress code allows. The boys usually wear dress pants and a nice shirt.

Our High School has three dances only.

Homecoming is in September. The girls wear short prom type dresses. The boys either a suit or just dress pants/shirt. Dance is held in the school rec center.

Black and White is in late January/early February. The girls wear either black, white, or black and white dresses. Not as fancy as Homecoming or prom. More like a basic little black dress. Boys wear suits or dress pants/shirt Dance is held in the school rec center.

Prom is in May. Only Juniors and Seniors are allowed to purchase tickets, although they can bring a date who is an underclassman if they fill out the appropriate permission slip. Some girls wear short fancy dresses similar to Homecoming, some go all out with the long designer gowns, costing upwards of $650-think Sherri Hill, etc. Boys wear either suits or a tux. Dinner is served, and the event takes place at a Country Club, Hotel ballroom, etc. Many of the kids arrive via limo or party bus.

For all of these events the girls are big on hair, makeup, spray tans, mani-pedi's, etc.

8th grade dance but it's not called a prom.

Same here. It's held at the school, immediately following the 8th grade "moving up" ceremony.

High school Junior prom is held in late May, also in the school. Senior prom is held offsite at a catering hall and is more formal. Takes place in late June, the night before graduation.

In our district there is an 8th grade moving up dance at the end of the school year. It's in the high school cafeteria. The girls wear dressy sundresses or the like. The boys wear khakis and button down shirt or the like.

In 11th grade there's a junior prom. The girls typically wear dressy short dresses and the boys wear dress pants, shirt and tie. Lots of kids go in groups without date

In 12th grade there's a more formal senior prom with long dresses and tuxedos.

I wouldn't like a fancy middle school prom. IMO it's projecting mature events on kids.

Our middle school does a formal Winter Dance for 7th and 8th grade only, and a Spring Fling for all grades, which has become more casual in the past couple years (this year it is themed as a Hawaiian Luau)

Our 8th graders also get a dinner dance at the end of the year, which is formal, but it's not likened to a prom by any stretch of the imagination.

At least one of our elementary schools has a kindergarten "Prom". It's ridiculous. They also have a kindergarten "Graduation", complete with cap and gown.

Our middle school has an 8th grade dance. It is dressy, but not quite prom dressy. The boys are mostly in dress pants, shirt and tie. There were a few with a suit, but no tuxes. The girls wear what I would call one step below prom dresses. It is just called the 8th Grade Dance; although it has a different theme every year.

We have a combined junior senior prom. Tickets to prom are $25. Includes appetizers and soda. Most kids "go out" to a restaurant for dinner before prom. You are FORBIDDEN from taking a limo or party bus from the grand march (high school gym) to the site of the prom (nearby event center). Busses are provided for everyone. Still, a few groups will do the limo thing to dinner and to the march, and then get picked up AFTER prom for other things, but I like the way it's done. If you can't afford a limo, or choose not to get one, you are not "out of place" in the least. There are various other "dances" but none called prom and none where people wear anything other than a nice dress (not a formal dress) and the guys wear button down shirts and dress pants. But, not tuxes. Only at prom do you see tuxes.

Seems about right.

ours has the 8th grade dance- kids get all dressed up for it- most girls get signed out of school a few hours early to get home and get hair and nails done, about 1/4 of them come with dates. In high school in 11th grade they have the Jr. Prom- sort of like the 8th grade dance but more kids have dates and even fancier dresses. Senior prom is the big one- kids all have limos, gowns etc and after prom they always do something- could be something as simple as going back to someones house to hang out or go to NYC to a night club, and a lot of them rent "prom houses" out in Montauk or the Hamptons- I don't go for prom houses so my daughter and her crew are heading into NYC after prom in their limo.

Here, we have something like an 8th grade formal. DD13 will wear a party-type dress, I assume boys will be in button shirts, maybe with ties, and dress slacks. There's no way I'd be taking her out of school to get hair or nails done--that's ridiculous at this age.

I don't know about here yet, but at our last HS, they combined the junior and senior proms. Typically, the junior girls wore shorter dresses, the seniors wore long, what I think of as "prom" dresses. My older DD wore short dresses to both--honestly, she couldn't have cared less, I had to drag her to JC Penney, where she basically picked the first party dress off the rack. Totally not her thing, which is fine. Boys typically wore tuxes as both juniors and seniors.

8th grade "formal" here. The girls did wear prom-ish dresses. The boys wore suits or shirt and tie.

My daughter went to three proms (Junior and Senior year at her own school and another her senior year at another school). She enjoyed every single one of them. So, I don't think you need to worry about "what will they have to look forward to?" Most of us who enjoy an event or style of entertainment (sports, Disney?), can easily enjoy it over and over again.

8th grade formal dance here. Junior and Senior prom in high school along with homecoming dances in the fall and winter formals usually in February. My daughter always looks forward to all the dances but usually skips the winter one. We're in prom mode right now and having a nice formal dance in 8th grade doesn't come into play at all. Actually it seems so long ago.

8th grade dance here. Junior/Senior prom in high school.

Homecoming at my daughter's high school is no longer formal. They sell a t-shirt as the ticket to get in. I think it's around $5.

Court warming is every year and is a dress-up occasion.

I think our middle school had some kind of end of the year dance, but nothing actually called a "junior prom".

Our middle school is 6, 7, 8th grades and they have dances ALL the time - I think 4 per year? None of them is called junior prom though. Their dances are (strangely, in my opinion) paired with these gigantic dodgeball matches for the whole school (like 1200 people) to participate in. I totally don't understand it.
