Junior Prom

The middle schoolers have a formal dance, but it's put on by 4-H, not the school, and not called prom. The girls wear short party dresses. My DD decided to go just a week before, so she actually wore a vintage bridesmaid dress that her grandma wore. Cute 50's look.

I don't think I would like one called Junior Prom, maybe just because it sounds more like something that you would go to with a date. But even so, I'm sure they will still have fun at real prom when they are in high school. It will be different than this Middle School event!

My daughter school consist of 7th and 8th grade. They are having a Jr. Prom for them. Does anyone else school have such a thing? I'm not liking the idea very much. If they have a prom now what do they have to look forward to when there in high school and have a regular prom?

I'm a little confused by them calling it a Junior Prom. Around here, the Junior Prom is the one for the 11th grade class (the Senior Prom is for the 12th grade class). Our middle school holds a dance for the 8th grade class and calls it the 8th grade semi-formal...and it is MUCH more casual than the Prom is. Based on the pictures I've seen on FB, the girls get dressed up in a nice short dress (prom is almost exclusively long gowns), and they boys do the minimum to meet the dress code, and mostly wear Dockers and an oxford shirt , some with ties., other boys just wear a polo shirt, plus the majority wear sneakers. It always looks so funny in the pictures to see the girls dressed up and the boys in Dockers with sneakers. At the 8th grade semi formal, flowers are not a thing, but they definitely are for Prom. And parents drive everyone to the 8th grade dance, for the Proms, a limo is standard.

The 8th grade dance is in the school gym, and there might be some snacks, music is from a DJ. The Junior Prom and Senior Prom are held at banquet halls, and include a sit down dinner and either a band or DJ.

My youngest will be attending her 8th grade dance in June. The kids dress up, but no one pretends it's a prom.

We have a 6th grade dinner and dance. It is not a Prom or dance by US standards.

It's to say goodby to primary school before heading to secondary school. It's after the presentation assembly held at the end of the year and goes for a couple of hours at the school.
