JUNE W.I.S.H. Challenge - Looking Ahead

I'm glad that we do the WooHoo Wednesdays because I need to remember to focus on the exciting things in life. Right now, things have been kind of a downer and I need to remember there are always good things going on .

My WooHoo is that my middle DD is coming home this weekend because she has a job interview on Tuesday. She graduated from college this May and the job prospects she had informed her that there were on a hiring freeze, so it was back to square one. Anyway, this is her first interview since graduation. The place has told her they are not looking to hire right now, but that they wanted to talk with her anyway. If nothing else, it will be great practice / experience interviewing. I'm excited to get her home for a little while!

My WooHoo this morning goes out to electric workers in my town. We had an unexpected power outage this morning (it wasn’t even stormy??) and they had us back up in just over an hour!

We have had those when a car hits a pole? And wind. And squirrels chewing something.

So I was exhausted after working 7 hours in my classroom yesterday and went to bed early. But then I was awaken by my dog barking...we're guessing he saw cats (or some other creature) in the back yard. I mean he was going crazy. But then my daughter was scared that he saw a person in our yard and was having trouble sleeping. So I didn't get back to sleep until 5:30. So at 7:30, I had every excuse running through my head to not get up. BUT I dragged myself out of bed, motivated by @Andrea464 and her virtual 5K today. While I didn't actually complete the 5K, I did run 2 miles. I would have walked the last mile, but I had to get online with my class and needed a little time to freshen up after the run. But woohoo that I got the run in. And woohoo that I got into my classroom yesterday, packed up all the student stuff, brought home all my picture books to organize over the summer and have all my materials needed to start the school year online. Plus I started to pack up my room to move back to our newly renovated school which will hopefully be completed by September. I also logged a little over 7 miles walking around my classroom yesterday!

Oh and another woohoo-my mom made dinner for us yesterday since she felt bad that no one could go in and help me in my classroom (I come from a family of teachers and we all used to help each other when we would pack up or set up a classroom). She made spaghetti and salad. And for the two of us, she made spaghetti squash. I had never had that before and have been meaning to try it. It wasn't bad. Definitely didn't taste like spaghetti. But I did a combination of half spaghetti and half spaghetti squash. I would definitely do that again!

Woohoo... I got out for a sunrise walk this morning, after not having done it Monday or Tuesday. I'm going to head down to the beach again after work for my evening walk.

Woohoo for my city. Our mayor is a gay woman with a background in federal prosecution, our fire chief is a black man and our police chief is a black woman, and what a difference that diversity makes in the way they've led the city. Our police force has been on a mandated improvement program around 8 or so years, they were just about to come off of it but there's talk it might be extended due to some of the things that have happened in the past week, but overall our police force has preformed much better than in other cities. Yesterday the mayor came out and talked to the protesters and is having the leaders come to the table to work on improvement the city can make.

And woohoo for my company. We're having follow up company wide calls/conversations on racism later this week and also town hall calls to talk about the damage stores have suffered and where we go from here. It is has always been a people focussed culture, but has never been this organized and clear before.

Belated woohoo... I've be dreaming about when I will make the ferry/peninsula/sister's house drive again, which would be for a quick 4th of July trip. I've also been dreaming about going down to Long Beach to my favorite hotel, and eating at my favorite restaraunt there... a trip that got canceled right before the lockdown. My Sister just pinged me about meeting her down in Long Beach for a quick overnight Friday, she wants to go down to celebrate her Wife's birthday by visiting where we sprinkled Vernie's ashes.

I can get to Long Beach by the same basic ferry/peninsula route, except I'll turn south at one point instead of west and the drive is 3 hours instead of 2. Very excited about doing this - even tho it means alot of mask wearing while we're in the hotel room together!

I have 2 woohoo's. 1. We survived on line school. Yay!!! today is the last day.

2. I lost 2.2 pounds in May. I started low gained a few pounds and then lost that plus the 2.2. I am still walking like crazy and now I feel like I will start losing more because of how much sweat is coming out of me on these walks. It is so hot and humid right now.

YES! I finished my 5k about thirty minutes ago and I swear my soul left my body. I also accidentally just typed "sweat" instead of "swear" and that's about right. Welcome to NC, where we went from feel good warmth to summer in one day. I ended up walking most of it but I'm ok with that- no PR's but I did it (and this may be the first time I've completed two 5ks in a week, so I'll take that too).

I came across an interesting exercise in an article the other day about mindful gratitude.

Acknowledge one ungrateful thought every day and transform it into a grateful one.

Ungrateful thought-my husband almost never puts his dishes in the dishwasher. If I wanted to hide something from him I would just stash in there. I find them in the sink, on the counter on top of the dishwasher and sometimes still on the table. It makes me crazy.

Grateful thought-he will cheerfully and appreciatively eat anything I put in front of him. I could give him peanut butter toast and an apple for dinner and he wouldn’t complain. And he will make something for himself if for some reason I don’t cook. And he loves to grill, I just have to ask.

GRATEFUL THOUGHTS - I was allowed into my classroom to packup the kids things and send home some surprises with them as well! I am physically able to pack up my room myself (just takes a lot longer alone). I am fortunate to have so many family members able to help me if they were allowed.

UNGRATEFUL THOUGHT - my son downright ignored a consequence last night and played video games after we went to sleep. (Yup woke up to him playing at 2am).

GRATEFUL THOUGHT - (this one was harder, but thought it was important to include in the exercise since it was occurring now) I caught him and now we can have a conversation about the importance of being honest and not deceitful while the issue is only video games and not a more serious teenage issue. Plus I’m just grateful to have children and be able to parent them. No one said parenting would be easy, right?

Hmm. This is a rough one. Lets see...

I really don't know right now. This migraine has taken over my thoughts right now. I will come back when this headache is gone. I don;t really see this as ungrateful but a grateful part of this is I have a job that will allow me to take part of the day off if i need to and finish working later today.

This is such a great idea!

One I've been having a lot lately Ungrateful Thought - Why can I not have a better house (we have small bathrooms and small closets which I hate).

Grateful Thought - I'm thankful that we didn't move into a "better" home about 7 years ago when we tried to sell our house because that has allowed us to do so many additional things and help our kids much more with college payments. If we had moved to the house I really wanted, our payments would have been much higher and even though we could afford them, not having the higher payments has allowed us to free up money to be able to help in other ways. We are blessed to have a large home with lots of room to space out since we've been home a lot more lately and it will easily hold our now mostly adult family of 5. For that I'm extremely grateful!

I'm going to try to do a couple more today. I've been having more down in the dumps thoughts that I normally have and doing this does make you feel better! Thanks for the idea!

This is one I do all the time...

UNFAVORABLE: why does Mike constantly complain about his food, including every couple hours overnight, and want fresh put down even if what's in his dish isn't very old.
FAVORABLE: so thankful he is still alive and every moment we have together is precious.

UNFAVORABLE: why is weight loss happening so slowly.
FAVORABLE: weight lost slowly is true weight loss and those pounds will stay off.

Ungrateful thought: Why do I have to endure terrible pain from an infection in an old root canal? Why do I have to wait to have oral surgery because of the infection? Why do I have to deal with this in the summer?

Grateful thought: I could have been in WDW when this happened instead of at home where I can get medical care over the next few weeks.
