June Park Hours

The hours for the week of June 10 are really odd this year. DCA doesn't open until 9AM except on Sunday. Disneyland doesn't have it's normal summer 8 to midnight hours all week. They are only open 8 to 11 on Tuesday and Wednesday and for some reason only 9 to 11 on Friday and Saturday. 9 to 11 on a Saturday!? Grad nites end the previous week. The previous weekend also has the short hours on Friday and Saturday, but normal 8 to 12 the rest of the week and 8 to 10 at DCA except on Grad Nite nights.

They did something like this last year, lots of later openings and earlier closings than people had expected. Midnight didn't happen until sometime in July? There were some threads about it at the time... there are other times of year where the open at 8am all week and then 9am on Fridays, too. I'm sure there is some sort of "logic" behind it on Disney's end, but I've never figured it out.

Can't remember last year, but I think the year before that happened because Shanghai Disneyland was sucking up cash before it opened and WDW and DLR were ordered to cut expenses in Q2 April-June. Park hours were cut back unusually (like you summarized) then expanded in July.

The hours are quite odd this year, following a pattern from prior years. Park operations has been challenged with cutting costs where at all possible. Trimming an hour here or there from park hours adds up to significant cost reductions over the course of a fiscal quarter. Notably, park hours move to the regular 8:00 am to Midnight at DL beginning the week of June 17th. However, DCA is still doing a 9:00 am - 10:00 pm, rather than 8:00 am.

Interestingly, the Saturday hours at DL on 6/16 are the shortest of the week, 9:00 am to 11:00 pm. The only logic I can find for the shorter weekend hours is that there's full AP blockouts of both SoCal levels and Deluxe. It's long been true that the AP blockout calendar is the most indicative sign of crowd levels, so Disney may have finally caught on to these statistics. Less weekday SoCal blockouts means potentiallly larger crowds, as many Southern California schools are already out for the summer. The full SoCal summer AP blockout starts a bit later in June, which is why summer crowds are often lower now than during Halloween season (where SoCal passes aren't blocked as frequently).

We went in June a week later last year and the hours were 8 to 10 for DCA and 8 to 12 for DL the entire week. Last year this week still had grad nites, so at least we lucked out there.

The logic makes sense that the reduced hours are based on the So Cal AP blackouts.

Disneyland Hours:
Thursday 6/14 8am-12pm
Friday 6/15 9am-11pm blackout
Saturday 6/16 9am-11pm blackout
Sunday 6/17 8am-12am

We’ll know if this holds true if Wednesday 6/20 has reduced hours.

Ahhh, maybe it was two years ago, then - time flies, I suppose. I just remember a weird June with reduced hours and lots of comments about it.

Remember this past December how they reduced hours the week before Christmas and then it was crazy and they had to extend them with in-park announcements? Yeah... I’m not super trusting of their predictive models...

Wednesday, 6/20 does NOT have reduced hours for DL, but is one hour shorter for DCA. The hours are posted on the DL website, but not the app. The app has been running two days behind.

Tuesday and Wednesday are not blockout dates though and both nights the park closes at 11. The following week also has blockouts starting on Wednesday. But the week we're going includes our daughter's birthday and our anniversary, which is why we went with that week this year.

Local schools are *largely* not out until after 6/15, some as late as 6/23ish. That also has an impact. Especially schools immediately around the parks.

May have to chalk it up to cost-cutting. Certainly a major disappointment. The weekend's have had 8:00 am openings and midnight closings year round for so long, it's frustrating for it to change! Even Memorial Day weekend has 9:00 am-11:00 pm hours.

You know, another thought... Pixar Pier does not open until 6/23. I’d bet a lot of people are putting off their trips until it is open, and Disney may be banking on that. Once it opens crowds will be considerably higher than usual as people come check it out, and they will need more staff than they have needed in CA for a long time.

You might be right but I tend to disagree.

The June 23 date was not announced until recently. Hard to plan for that in advance if they have not announced it.

The SCAP blockouts are coming in late June. I doubt we will see that much of a surge effect right around June 23. As the summer goes on then maybe.

It was February, 4 months ahead. For Disneyland it is pretty easy to plan that far. ;-)
For a lot of those AP’s who live up north or out of state and plan one or two trips during the summer, I can see them putting it off until the opening.

Here I was thinking they announced that date in April. Hard to keep track!

Even so, I guess I do not see Pixar Pier or Pixar Fest being that big of a draw. Disney always wants to have something to build their summer marketing around. Next year it will be...drum roll please..Star Wars Land. But PxP? I am not so sure.

I definitely see the Incredicoaster as being a draw. The Pier itself, maybe not. But the same way people flooded to GotG when it first opened (which was, similarly, a re-theming of an existing ride) I expect them to flock to the Incredicoaster.

Does Incredicoaster have a single rider line?
