The next morning we found ourselves in Port Canaveral near the Fantasy and the Sovereign again. We had to take our hand luggage to 8:00 a.m. breakfast (second sitting) and then disembark directly from the restaurant. We easily found our other luggage in the area designated for our group of staterooms (grouped by number), assembled it on a cart and had a porter take it to the customs officer (where we simply placed the customs forms into a slot) and to the Delta area (tipped the porter $2 per bag). We had been told that about one of every 8 or 9 people would be checked by customs--we didn?t see anyone stopped. Very smooth and fast disembarkation procedure.

And Delta had just recently re-begun checking baggage at the port (whew!), so we didn?t have to deal with luggage until we arrived at home in Kalamazoo! The Delta baggage person at the dock told us we could check all the baggage on the dock but then would not be able to change our flights. There was a much earlier flight, which we had rejected because of fears of not necessarily making it to the airport in time. Perhaps we could have taken a chance, dragged the luggage with us, and tried to get onto the earlier flight. But then, it might have been totally sold out and we?d be on the 3:45 anyway. That?s likely, because our 3:45 flight was heavily oversold (remember, we saw 3 cruise ships disembarking at Port Canaveral, and then in addition there were all those people going home on a Sunday after their land vacations, too).

We took the Disney transfer bus to the Delta area at the Orlando airport and left the scooter with the Delta baggage claim office, as previously arranged. I think by this time it was about 9:30 a.m. Our plane left at 3:45 p.m., so we had 6 hours in the airport, groan.

Getting onto the flights required repeatedly showing our IDs. In the Orlando airport I was not able to walk the few steps through the metal detector, so I was patted down by a female security person. Otherwise, nothing special about security for us. Oh, just one thing: my hand luggage contained a coiled extension cord which had been used to recharge the scooter overnight. The security guards asked about that, but they accepted the explanation without demanding the suitcase be opened.

It was a thoroughly enjoyable vacation.

What is the Delta tansfer bus? We're flying Delta in the fall and are very interested in hearing about this. Thanks for any help.

NCRedding,

Do you mean the DISNEY transfer/shuttle bus?
When you buy your cruise ticket, you are offered tickets on the Disney transfer buses.

If you fly into Orlando on the same day as the cruise, there is a bus at the airport to take you to the ship at Port Canaveral. A Cast Member will meet you (at the baggage claim area, I believe) with a sign that identifies him/her as Disney. This person will direct you to the correct bus.

If you go to a Disney resort first, there is a bus from the airport to certain Disney resorts (a Cast Member will assist you, as above). Then, on cruise embarkation day there is another bus from the resort to the ship.

After the cruise, you can take a bus from the ship either to the airport or to a Disney resort. At this time, if you are flying home, most major airlines will allow you to check your luggage before you board the airport bus and it will show up back at your destination airport. This includes Delta.

If you have more than a couple people, you might also want to investigate the costs of alternative limo/taxi systems for transportation, since you pay per person on the bus but per car on the limo/taxi systems. And the limo service can be more flexible (e.g., stop at a grocery store on the way to the ship).
We (4 people) chose to use the buses and let Disney make all the arrangements. We were quite satisfied with our choice.

Hope this helps. And hope you have a wonderful trip.

Sorry, didn't read carefully. I've already booked our transportation of cruise 3 in the fall, just mis read and thought I might have a new option.

Thank you so much for a 3 night report! Since I will be taking my Girl Scout troop on the 3 night in 2004, I am always looking for a trip report that will pertain to us! The 7 nights are interesting, but discouraging too, because so much will be unavailable to us. Can you tell me a bit about the entertainment that the teens enjoyed? What did you choose for dinner each evening? Did you use room service, buffet, or sit-down for breakfast? Was you hubby as disillusioned about Nassau as some have been?
Thanks again from a fellow Michigander!!

Unfortunately, I can?t help too much with the teen entertainment because my daughter and her best friend stuck to themselves. The first thing they did was to explore the ship thoroughly. Then, their favorite thing was to watch ?Lilo and Stitch? twice in the theater and to watch Disney movies on the TV in the darkened cabin, while using room service (which they thoroughly enjoyed). They went to one show (Hercules). They liked the teen beach at Castaway Cay, especially since it wasn?t crowded at all. And the Internet Café--but for less time than I would have predicted. These girls are creative writers, so they spent a fair amount of time in the cabin on those projects, too, and their own art work. They would have enjoyed the Mickey-drawing lessons, but they were too busy to go.
They avoided the family pool (the only one available to teens) because it was crowded. They wished they?d been allowed into the adult pool, but they were only 17.

For breakfast we used the sit-down restaurant; all of us found something we loved on the menu--eggs, pancakes, French toast, pastries, bagels, and fantastic sticky buns. The buffets were very nice, too, but we didn?t go there for breakfast. For lunch, we divided up: some had pizza, some had the buffet, some had burgers.

As for dinner, I don?t really remember what we had. All of us found something we liked every night (even the picky eaters): pasta, veal, tenderloin, chicken, salmon and other fish. The mashed potatoes and smashed potatoes were superb.

And finally, no, my husband wasn?t disillusioned about Nassau because he ?didn?t have any high hopes for it? when he went there.
Actually, we considered the ship our real destination--partly because they were all exhausted from the Orlando parks and partly because I?d read that Nassau wasn?t a wheelchair-friendly place (I had a scooter, which is even harder to take into a cab). We aren?t scuba divers or snorkelers, and also not really drinkers, so those excursions were not tempting.
The place we would have liked to see is Atlantis for its aquariums. Maybe some other time.

Hope this is helpful.

Helps alot! Thanks for taking time. I believe I will be encouraging the girls to experience some of Nassau, just for the sake of saying that they went. Coming from a totally rual area, I hope they see some of what we take for granted. Thanks again for the help!
